**University + Skiing**

k so im just wondering from all you at university. from last years experience i guess.. Anyways for those of you who are taking fairly heavy course loads. do you actually get to go skiing often? in your answer can you please include how it takes to get to your hill. just wondering cause i think im heading off next year. just curious. thanks a lot.

I'm at school for the first year this year, and I am a good 1.5 hours from a legit hill. Its depressing because i dont see how im going to get to ski often, mostly because of how broke I am combined witha busy schedule.

full time student20 minutes to mt2-5hours of class per day3-6 daysskiing a week
I go to a pretty intense engineering school but the local mountain has night skiing (8 a.m. to 10 p.m.) so I have alot of time and flexibility to balance classes, studying, and skiing. Its pretty awesome

ive taken 15 or 16 credits a semester for 2 years and i have always been able to go. well i also skipped a few classes every now and then to go haha.. but i litterally live about 10 minutes from the closest mountain.. so its easy for me. i am transferring tho and the closest mountain will be like at least an hour away..we'll see how much it changes how often i get to go.. im used to going about 4-5 times a week.. even if it was like already 7 or 8 and im bore im used to just grabbing my stuff and going... not gonna be able to do tat anymore :-/

I know how it feels man, I'm in first year here. Coming from home where I was literally a 5 minute walk to my local hill to a 2-3 hour drive to the nearest snow is depressing. However if you want it bad enough it will come to you.

Look in to joining the school's snow club, make friends who ski / board and listen to how they plan on getting up.

So long as you don't go to school anywhere obscenely hot or flat I'm sure you'll be just fine.

im not in university or cooledge yet but i find it hard to belive that someone with a heavy course load could ".....easily be a full time student (12 credits) and ski 5 days a week."

at 12 credits you could do all tues thurs classes and ski mon wed friday. youd have to work your ass off those two days but yeah. you could

I take 22 hours a semester as a Civil Engineering major and I went skiing 40 days last year. Not bad, and thats at the Academy.

12 credits is 4 classes, if you don't take online class you could take just tuesday thursday classes. Also you could take 4 night classes and ski 7 days a week, shits possible, but in your early years. When you get into your major specific classes it could be harder to ski as much.

ok, thankyou for clearing that up ( and corked7man).

see in highschool i know 12 credits as 12 classe's so it didnt make much sense to me but seign as it is 4 classe's it seems much more duable

I am currently going to university in victoria bc. For my degree in engineering I have 6 classes a term.
I have 25+ hours of class per weekaround 15 hours of homework and on top of that I have to study.
however generally weekends can be pretty empty for me.

really it depends on what you are going to university for and what is required of you at the university you are going to attend.
last year I got in 50+ days living 4 hours away from my ski hill. this year I hope to get around 15.

on the other hand, I'm a full time student with one 4 classes and just 13 credits and I am lucky to ski twice a week during the winter. it really depends on your major, your classes (how much work your professors decide to give you and how long it actually takes to study), and your course loads.

each year i ski a bit less than the previous year, but its still pretty good.

freshman year i was doing 13 credits a quarter, usually 2-3 days per week, so i skied about 3-4 days in a typical school week, bagging in maybe 80 days? Down from the 120+ from senior year in high school.

last year was considerably tougher. a couple of my classes were crucial, so i had to bust my ass off, and gas got expensive, but i still probably got 60 days in?

This year, who knows. I might be taking a grad class or two during winter quarter, and arch studio consumes my life, but I always do better in the winter, so I'm not sure. Breaks, weekends, and the potential weekday off may add up to 50-60 days? Maybe more, maybe less.

And I live 1 and a half hours each way from the mountain, so its a chore to get up there many times.

So you can definitely ski while in college, although, depending on the major, distance to the mountain, etc, that may get very tough. If you don't fall in to the partying/apathetic vacuum, you'll be alright.

Im 20 mins from alright mt legit park. take 15 credits a semester Im senior now I get in 120+ a year 5-7 days a week skiing

I went to school in Santa Barbara, which is located on the beach in Southern California and is about a 6-hour drive from Mammoth, and I got at least 30 days of skiing each year I was in school. I joined my school's ski and snowboard team, which competed against a bunch of other Southern California schools, so we were constantly roadtripping to Mammoth on the weekends. It was a lot of driving, but we would either carpool or rent 12-seater vans from the school and fill 'em to the brim, which made the driving pretty fun. Every year we spent a week in Mammoth over New Year's, 5 days during spring break, and then took 4 or 5 other weekend trips as well. It worked super well for me cuz I never had class on Fridays, which meant I could leave on Thursday for the weekend trips and get an extra day of skiing in. So, moral of the story: you can live super far from the mountains and still get plenty of ski days.

Saving up once-or-twice-a-week classes as well as online options for the winter really helps. Also, sleeping in the back of your car goes a long way.

It depends what you`re taking... but if you`re taking school at all seriously and in a moderately difficult department or faculty, it will be a victory to beat 30 days in a season. I got hit pretty hard last year working part time and going to law school and got about 10 days... there just isn`t enough time available. For me right now I can choose two things from the following list:

1. School

2. Work

3. Females

4. Partying

5. Skiing

6. Other Hobbies

There isn`t time to deal with more than 2. Right now I`m doing 1 and 2, next term, 1 and 5. I am hoping to get to 30 days between Jan and March. It will be difficult.

I am majoring in microbiology, and and live 2 hours or 3 hours from the nearest mountains (they are in opposite directions). I get about 5 days a week over my winter break, which is abnormally long (~2 months). Once school starts I get most weekends, but that is realy working my ass off to take them off.

Oh Yeah, I'm taking 17 units.

Next semester is my last, and after that I don't know what I'm doing, might be moving to the bay and then my days will significantly decrease.

It really depends on where you go. If you are within 1 hour from a mountain, it wouldnt be super difficult to ski a bunch of half days.
