University of Utah?

Or do any of the many outdoor activities that utah offers in the summer, skiing isn't the only thing you can do here.

As for someone saying something about the research, utah is #2 in research behind MIT.

alright notice how a lot of kids in utah are always on there computers...its because theres not much better shit to do. yeah theres mountains and hiking and stuff which are great but it's not like the outdoors in california oregon or even colorado where the nature is more inviting. i guess its an opinion thing but having a large body of water that isnt a salt lake is much nicer than being in a desert climate.

oh boy, get out to the uintahs. and its not an opinion thing, its a knowledge thing. get out to the many reservoirs within close proximity.

its 12am on a sunday, wtf else are we suppose to be doing?

And youve obviously never been anywhere in utah but slc and the ski resorts. There is plenty of inviting nature and multiple rivers and bodies of water, they're just more than 20mins from slc.

hahahah! People travel from all over to enjoy our summer activities. I could see how it would suck if you are only motivated to sit around on your computer and drink, but there is a TON to do.

you really need to do some research before you come in here arguing with people that are in these programs.. i guess i will hold your hand and use google to get some actual facts.
Biomedical engineering ranks (my major)http://www.infozee.com/channels/ms/usa/bioengineering-biomedical-engineering-rankings.htm
and our researchhttp://www.unews.utah.edu/old/p/021610-2.html
Even though MIT has more than 10 times more research funding, the U still has more startup companies than MIT.Its called efficient research and the U is now holding conferences to teach other research schools (Stanford, UCal's, etc) how to do better research. IHmmm, maybe im not so delusional after all? Nice try though

lawlz at people that rip on the U with absolutely no basis to hate on it. It is easily one of the top research universities in the country. Read a fucking book - U of U studies pop up everywhere in medical, business and engineering articles. Personally I think college is as much self-exploration as it is academic. For many of us in Utah ,the life experience are something that no other location in the world can provide. It's almost the longest summer day of the year and I can : ski snowbird and snowbasin, explore Canyonlands, Arches, Bryce and Zion Ntnl Parks within 4 hours , and rally beater cars on the flattest surface in the world within an hours drive of SLC. Yea for being a state university the U totally sucks! haa

im just curious what "life" experience utah gives you that no other place does?
the U is a great school in a few concentrations, sure...but to talk about the academics like theyre the greatest in the country is rediculous. its no university of idaho, but at the same time its definitely no university of virginia or or even wisconsin-madison.
overall, a very mediocre school. a name that will be recognized, but maybe not so highly valued...either way it doesnt matter cause a degree doesnt mean shit until you prove yourself at your first job.

okay john you win whatever i dont give a fuck, theres tons of stuff to do...im just pretty sick of this place. i personally need to live in a spot where there is a thriving music scene where good shows constantly passes through. Those free concerts in the summer really aren't as good as everybody talks them up to be, but free music is free music i guess. the acts really aren't good unless you are a hipster. I'm not saying good acts don't pass through here from time to time but the vibe at concerts here blows.

the rave scene here sucks and the only people that go are creepers and smacked out slutty 16 year old girls--fuck that. Back in California raves are sick and hot girls that are over 18 go all the time. plus california girls are way nicer because they aren't "worried" about getting hit on all the time because they love it unlike utah girls who get creeped out for no reason when people are trying to be nice to them.

I also really like the beach and salt lake definitely doesn't have that. and as for girls, most all of the girls that will touch your wang have fucked everybody else in the valley because they have so much advantage here. seriously, girls here could be 6's and get laid whenever they want solely for the fact that guys that are down severely outnumber girls here. You'd think differently, because mormon girls are fucking gorgeus, but since they aren't down its always a cocktease no matter what. Seriously, what a waste of a perfectly beautiful group of women. In places like california or colorado guys like us can run shit because there are so many more women to choose from.

Although I'm hating pretty hard, Utah does has some really bomb skateparks. I will say that I have made some really dope friends out here.

Although i have literally nothing to complain about in the winter here, im just saying the summer and fall sucks until the snow comes.

I mentioned a ton of fun activities and locations that make Utah unique and unlike anywhere in the world therefore it puts off a vibe that cannot be matched - Which makes for a kickass college experience.

So you're saying UV or UW madison are better for college experience? You mean have better parties? Parties =/= unique college experience, but whatever floats your boat. Being in the mid west or south east, i would miss out on a ton of great experience i have had in utah, which would be everything else i do thats not partying.

And alexg, if music is your jam yeah slc isn't gonna be that tight. Ive s

Yeah the summer here sucks! There are only 3 motocross tracks within a 30 min drive, and an FMX complex an hour away. And I have to go skydiving every weekend. The weather is so warm with no rain that I have to go out and bar hop on my bike all the time. And it is only going to get worse when they finish building the wakeboard cable park in a couple months. I'm just suffering through it until the winter starts up again. It just blows!

really dude? again? you take everything i say and twist it up to your liking.
seriously your a cocksucker..i didnt mention one thing about partying..in fact i ask dude a question to what he meant in his post, then went on to solely talk about academics.
and i have absolutely no clue what college life is like in virginia. however, madison is an awesome college town and a whole lot more fun than utah, minus the skiing.

The only benefits of those schools over the U for a "college experience" is partying. "college experience" has nothing to do with academics. yeah, people rage really hard at madison, i have some friends who live in utah from there, but i bet i have just as much fun as anyone there does. You measurement of fun is partying and the partying has to be the most epic rager every time, which is thats all that makes you happy its fine, but its not the only way to have fun.

you dont even know my first name, but know all about my priorities huh?
utahs dick is so far in your mouth its blinding you from reality.

Im merely posted my opinion based on what you've posted man. Thats all you complain about utah is they didn't party hard enough for you, which is fine dude you can do whatever you want, if partying hard as fuck every night is essential to your college experience then im glad you're in CO. Ill take my 2-3 night a week partying at all these "lame ass parties" and ski 4-5 days a week at some of the best resorts in the country that are < 30 minutes away. The only thing that bothers me is you came here and you supposedly "partied" but you moved because of the party scene...

i moved because i wasnt happy there-thats the number 1 reason, maybe the only reason i left. i was going through some personal shit at the time and didnt want to waste so much money in a place i wasnt happy. i went home to community college for a year and a half where i just started to get into some sketchy shit, so i knew i needed to leave before shit went south. i ended up applying to u oregon, uconn, buffalo, udelware, unc, csu, cu...got into all of them, visited some, and felt like fort collins was a dope place that fit my personality really well (laid back, college town, i love weed so i smoke legally, beer is great, large city 1hr away but everything i need is right infron of me, denver sports, pretty good music scene, skiing close by but not so close as to infere with school, plenty of good lookin girls, great weather...just to name a few). i felt like colorado was a great state for me and a place where i would be able to focus on school while still enjoying everything i love. im happy here, stayin out of trouble for the most part. id say i played my cards pretty fuckin well and feel pretty lucky to be living as good as i am. hows that for reasoning?

Yeah, i could argue more about some of your "reasons" for the place you wanted to live, but im over it. You're happy where you, i'm happy where i am, thats all the matters.

I just hate when anyone mentions shit about beer in utah, any beer thats under 10 bucks for a 12 pack is the same as any other beer in the country thats under 10 bucks for a 12 pack. Utah beer is 4%, every other states beer (10 bucks or less for a 12 pack) is 5 or less (minus ice beer of course). Your other arguments a fine, the beer thing just really makes me mad because everyone that complains about it probably drinks some version of light beer every weekend they go party, which is usually 4-4.5% alcohol.

as i said, Utah does have some good programs. But you can find arbitrary rankings almost anywhere: http://www.university-list.net/us/rank/univ-20121046.htm That was the 2nd google link. I'll admit the startup company data is impressive, but that's not necessarily the best indicator of research quality. Some universities are more protective of their intellectual property than others. Also who knows how many of these companies are successful.

The point is, for most areas, Utah cannot match up with elite universities. Here's a good ranking system that actually is open about its methodology. http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2010-2011/engineering-and-IT.html For general engineering and technology, Utah is not in the top 50 of world universities. At the top are the ones you'd expect Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Berkeley, Cambridge. If you attend these schools, you have the advantage of the best faculty in the world. The reputation of those universities speak for themselves. That's not to say other universities are not doing good research, but those schools are elite for a reason.

university of utah threads make me giggle.

there is no need for anger...everyone should go to a place based on their own opinions of that place. travel there, see it, experience it. You get out of it what you put into it...alex it sucks you still think that utah sucks and is dependent on drinking...leave then...partying is cool...just dont expect the tightest?...its all what you make of it. get out there and do it. I love utah and would recommend to anyone...i have had some of the best experiences of my life in the year and half that I have lived there...and i have no regretts

You are full of shit. A community college is not a university so they don't even compare. There are swarms of people from back east that attend the same tier two university I attend because they can get the exact same job and same degree for literally fractions of the cost. It all depends on what program you get into. Simple as this; if you wanted to get a job with the BLM running transects and ecological reviews then you probably won't stand much of chance against the field botanist with a degree from SUU. If you wanted to be nurse why would you spend a shit ton of money back east when you could just head to Utah and get the same degree from one of the best programs in the nation. I am not pulling this out of my ass. I was personally advised by a Harvard graduate to save money and go to school locally because it will get me the same job. Although the main difference is the fact that the big tier one universities back east have a lot money and participate in a lot cutting edge research, but guess what, that only matters once you are a graduate student. My homie Taylor Sparks got his bachelor degree at the U of U and he is now getting his Phd at MIT. Fuck man my university tuition is only 2500 and we have programs that will get you places. For instance.

OGDEN, Utah – For the fourth consecutive year, Weber State University’s John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics is included in the Princeton Review’s “Best 300 Business Schools” publication.

We are not the best, but it would be a good business choice to spend less and get just as much.

Also, you might like this state based on where you grew up. I grew up near San Francisco, a crazy ass party town, and was extremely dissappointed with Salt Lake. If you grew up in a rural town you are most likely going to think SLC is the coolest place in the world mainly because you most likely haven't lived in a city before and all this shit will be new to you.

but like i said, this place is the tits in the winter and i can't complain about anything then.

And Wenzel, i'm 2 steps ahead of you...leaving on friday bub.

I grew up right outside of New York City, I know what a "real" city is. Obviously SLC doesn't have the same feel as NYC, but personally I wouldn't live here if it did. I like that it's smaller and more chill, and that it doesn't have that rush rush rush stressed out vibe, yet everything I want is still within a few minutes drive for me. Just my .02 cents.

It sounds to me like Utah is not the place for you. I see a lot of people on a day to day basis that just hate it here. Which I can understand, there aren't many big cities compared to other states with larger populations. But if you like to get out and tear it up than Utah has anything you can think of tearing it up on.

Do you get out and about in Utah? The people living in rural Utah aren't some some backwoods hillbillies that shit themselves whenever they go into the city. You remind of my friend from back east living in Driggs, ID with his wife. They lived in College towns ever since they got married then BOOM bumfuck Idaho. They are dying to get out as soon as they can. Personally I am planning on investing in some land up by Judkins and Tetonia. Do you get the picture? People from the city don't like the country, which is all the better in my opinion.

it really isn't the place for me until winter hits. and honestly i'd rather live in the country and not deal with most of the idiots that live in this sad excuse for a city. not calling out anybody specifically cause i like the skier kids, but the people here in SLC generally creep me the fuck out.

Totally agree. Im from Seattle where the music is great and the snow is.. wet. I have talked to some bands about their past shows when they pass through Seattle and they say that Seattle has the best vibe. I asked about their SLC show and they said the vibe plain out sucked. So if you want good music with a lot of festivals consider Seattle. we have bumbershoot, block party, warped tour, and so many concerts throughout the year.

Im headed out to SLC this summer to check out U of U and Utah state. Honestly which is better? Snow scene wise, campus, people?

If you go to U of U where do you ride?

almost everyone will say the U is better, pretty much in every way. And people ride pretty much everywhere, canyons, PC, brighton, not really solitude, the bird and alta

In the past week I've been on 2 pretty cool hikes less than 30 minutes away, Rode 4 different rails less than an hour away, raged at 2 parties with nothing but snow bros and big, black football players, smoked good bud for cheap, taken amazing sunset pictures at ensign peak and I work 8-3 monday - friday.

Utah fucking kicks ass and the winter is 10x better. I don't attend the U so I can't talk about the academics but every person I have talked to that goes there is really nice, and loves to shred.

I am more than ecstatic that I live here and I have yet to even scratch the surface of what Utah has to offer.

Utah does suck if your used to a place without mormons. But don't listen to him about the girls, there are a ton of hot sexy girls walking around everywhere, he just never had the skill or charm to be anything more than "that creepy alex g kid". Hhahahaa i love you alex!

Slc is as fun as you make it, like anyplace else. I agree that theres better party scenes but it could also be a whole lot worse.

That's not true. I have fun every day of the summer. There's a ton of stuff to do, Utah is awesome for hiking, biking running, fishing, climbing, swimming and boating, and this summer skiing.... everything.

"The desert sucks" is completely your opinion - as people come from all over the world to visit our deserts, which in my mind are awesome and absolutely beautiful.

Yea it's hot, and yea it's not the best city for partying or bars, but that's certainly not why I live here, so I would hardly say that for someone looking to move here to be involved in the outdoors it that utah "kinda blows".

And really, the party scene isn't even as bad as people make it out to be. I'm at different house parties every weekend (and I'm sure there are some through the week, too, but as a working stiff I don't usually want to go out on a random Monday), and enough bars to keep you entertained.
