University of Canterbury?

Hey guys I'm looking into studying abroad next summer and was looking at Canterbury. Anyone have any opinions on it? Nightlife, skiing, etc?

Probably not the best region to go to at the mo considering all the shit that has happened there this year. Christchurch is not in good shape, and wont be for a while. The skiing is average in my opinion (mt hutt would be the best), and there's pretty much little to no nightlife due to the city being under indefinite construction.

I would recommend you check out Dunedin (Otago). Really awesome city, solid university, decent nightlife, and the skiing is by far the best in NZ. Treble Cone, The Remarks, Coronet Peak, Snow Park, Cardrona...the list goes on. If you're focused primarily on skiing with studying on the side, this is the place to go. If you're more looking for the nightlife buzz and an outright epic city, with decent skiing relatively close, come to Wellington. Hands down the best nightlife and city in general in NZ (arguably).

What were you guys planning on studying?

im a biomed engineering major but I would probably be just getting some of my gen-eds/international requirements out of the way. Isn't wellington really far away from skiing though? how far away from skiing are dunedin vs wellington? thanks a lot man

Sorry for the late reply..

Sweet. Yeah Wellington's about 300km (around 4 hours drive) away from Ohakune (main ski town at the base of Mt Ruapehu), as opposed to Dunedin being in between 150-200km away from 4 (Snow Park, Cardies, Remarks, Coronet) of the main ski areas in the Otago region. Dunedin is no doubt your best bet if you're going to have a large focus on skiing. I just thought Wellington deserved a mention for being such a rad city.

bumping this back up....

Did you end up going to University of Cantebury? I'm trying to decide between Uni of Otago and Uni of Canterbury. I will be going Feb - June in 2013 so no skiing from what I understand (which is fine), but does anyone have any advice?

How is Christchurch reconstruction going? The posts in here made it sound pretty bad.

Canterbury Uni is in Christchurch, which has been hit pretty badly by the earthquake, and Otago is in Dunedin, which is about 5 hours south. The rebuild is going pretty slowly. Both are good places to go to school though.

-Christchurch CBD has been closed off for about a year now, since it was one of the hardest hit areas of the earthquake. I've only been there once since the EQ so can't really say any more than that.

-Dunedin has pretty good nightlife if you're a student. All the bars are a walk away, and everyone who is out is usually basically the same age as you. Lots of flat parties ect around too. Unlike most uni's at Otago everything is is one place, on one campus.

-1/5 people in Dunedin are students so it has a much bigger student culture or student feel to it than Chch.

- For uni ratings Otago rates much better academically. Auckland is the only uni which would compete with Otago realistically.

-You don't need a car in Dunedin. You can walk basically anywhere you would need it. Christchurch is more spread out.

Hurp biased thread...

If you want to do med/ a b.com and drink piss. Dunedin.

If you want to do eng/ a b.com and drink piss. Chch.

If you want to be a hipster/ do a b.a and drink piss. Wellington.

If you want to do a b.com and live a boring life. Auckland.

If you like big mountain real skiing and dont have much cash. Chch clubfields.

If you like hanging with your buds and being a student. Wanaka/QT fields.

If you want to drive fucking ages everytime you want to go to the hill. Ruapehu.

amiright?

i can not stress enough how dope the skiing is in canterbury the clubbies are so sick. soooo much gnar! and rope tows they are an experience. mt hutt would not be the best feild in canterbury all though it is one of 2 feilds that accually has a park in canterbury

Bump!

I'm looking to do a semester at Canterbury in the summer of 2015 hopefully. Does Mt. Hutt still have the big jump line up? They're park looks pretty damn good to me. How would you recommend traveling from Christchurch to Mt. Hutt? And how would you recommend traveling within the city (is there a good public transportation system)?

Yo dude if you're still planning on coming, hit me up I litterally just started today at canterbury. There is a snowsports club and everyone just sort of hits people up for rides and shit but I would be happy to dirve us up and shit if you keen so hit me up when you come man!
