Ummm...I ripped out a binding today...what the fuck!

Okay, so I bought a pair of JP vs. Juliens from a certain NS member (I'm not gonna throw his name out until I have a chance to talk to him about this and figure some stuff out) and they finally came last night, so yesterday I was super excited to try them out even though there was not really and new snow, but I figured 'fuck it, I've been waiting to try these for ages'...so that's what I did. After a quick coat of wax and a hot scrape I was ready to ride, so I headed out, in my haste I didn't even bother re-setting the DIN, which was ok since I typically ride on 8 or 9 and these were set at 8=toe and 7=heel, respectively. After a couple short runs (and one crash...slightly overshot a zero spin on a 15 or-so foot pyramid type jump) I decided that these are a pretty fun ski, even on hard snow they handled better than I would've thought from reading what people said about them on here. Anyway, coming up to this little lip type thing a few hundred yards up from the chair I decide to nosepress 360, or at least attempt one...so I come up to it and lean forward and start to press my skis and all of a sudden...(I can't really describe the sound, because I don't remember if there was much of a sound) my heel piece it laying on the ground and my right ski is shooting down that hill, to which I immediaitely yell 'WHAT THE FUCK!?' followed by 'FOUR!' as a warning to move outta the way of that damn ski.

SO extremely pissed off I ski down on one ski, remember I've had these things for less than 24 hours and maybe this was my 4th run on a TINY slope, we're talking like most resorts beginner/bunny section (I run lifts and stuff there, and had some time to ride yesterday, that's why I was riding them there) I take the ski and binding inside and I start looking at it, and Kevin (lead tech, we've got an on-site shop to do mounts and whatnot) takes a look at it we both agree that some shit is not right...these aren't regular screws, they're metal threaded inserts, the kind you use when you've already ripped out a binding and are putting it back on. So here's my question for you guys...what do you think is up with that? Did he know and not tell me on purpose, cause I'm kinda doubting you could not know something like that, shops don't usually mount with those plugs/inserts unless some shit went wrong before and they wanna use the same holes. And is this common? I'd heard one or two stories about the FKS getting ripped out cause of the tight screw pattern, but these are the Axial2 (PX heel) and I didn't expect any issues with them. I should mention that ths skis and bindings came as a set and were close to my boot size, that's why I grabbed them up. And for anyone with experience with this sort of thing... should I epoxy the holes and try again, or just move the mount? Probably no chance of getting Armada to warranty these for me huh? Ah fuck this sucks...so what does NS think? Some of you guys that have these skis and/or experience with rip-outs I wanna know what you say.

Was the binding mounted exactly for your boot sole length, or was it kinda close? If it was kinda close, did you adjust the binding for exactly your BSL

If the binding was mounted and adjusted for too short or too long, you can cause weird forces on the binding which will prevent it from releasing properly and therefore sometimes transfer the force to the mount.

Now if the binding was mounted for your boot and adjusted to your boot correctly, then possibly the inserts were put in poorly (i.e bad epoxy job, etc.) Check the holes for any dried glue or something similar that would indicate this.

I would call Armada and tell them you pulled a binding though. They have a pretty good warranty and this might fall under that. If not I support you on the refund.

I would get your skis and boots professionally adjusted before going out on them. I've had... bad... experiences doing otherwise.

They weren't mounted for my boot, but like I said we have an on-site shop and I adjust and mount stuff quite frequently, I did ajust the forward pressure on them for my boot and checked it on both skis, I just didn't adjust the DIN because it was so close to what I ride anyway and I was only trying them out on a couple groomer runs. I am thinking of contacting Armada, but I'm worried that I wasn't the original purchaser and don't even know where the mount was done, if I did I might tell the shop that they need to get me new skis for the shitty mounting job they did, but like I said, it looks like it's already been heli-coiled and not done right, I mean it wasn't like I landed bad off a 30ft cliff, or something... I tryed to nosepress and the heel ripped out, it pisses me off. Do I go through the local dealer or just contact Armada directly to find out about warranty?

Ripped my P12's out of my park ski a couple days ago after i already had them heli-coiled for ripping out before. The coils lasted for three trips to the hill and pulled out pretty easily the very first hit on the fourth day.

The kid that sold you those should have told you the were coiled if he knew. Did the binding pull out cleanly or did a take a hunk of core/topsheet?

If you spent a lot on them you've got a right to be pissed off - contact the seller. If you got a good deal, suck it up, it happens. Remount them.

Couldn't you just mount them in a different spot? But if is was you i would get rid of the px's. Two of my friends have ripped them out multiple times this year on ar6's madens and gotamas. I have them too and they pre release and my friends forward pressure always moves. I would never buy them again.

slightly off topic but real qucik if anyone could help me is it necessary to ahve something between ski and binding or is it ok to have to binding mounted straight to the ski? like no little rubber 1 or 2 mm pad thing

Okay, I'm going to include some pics now that I finally found the cable for the digital camera. You can see some tears/pressure cracks or something on the topsheet, but it pulled fairly clean... and the binding pics are somewhat blurry, but those are the (brass?) inserts that pulled out instead of the regular screws, they were clearly coiled cause a previous rip-out...I filled the holes with epoxy today and am letting it cure overnight, but do you guys think I should try'n remount in the same holes again, cause Kevin and I were looking at it today and the ripout was pretty bad, all the coils we tried had alot of space in the hole, not a tight fit as it should be, and yes there was dried glue in the holes which would indicate a poor job, and I don't think they were sealed proerly cause there was some rust from the mounting screws in one or two of the holes, you might be able to see it in one of the pics, but do you think it will hold if I do it right this time, or should I just more the mount? ...but then I will most likely have to move the mount on the other ski as well. And this whole ordeal makes me wonder if the other ski possibly has the same issue. And if I move the heel, I might have to move the toe also, so possibly both toes and both heels would have to be remounted in order to achieve a proper mount. This whole thing is a huge pain in the ass.

move the mount. Go back 1 to -4. Dont take the chance that this could happen again and just redrill the ski. Sucks, but it sounds like the damage just isnt worth trying to salvage.

Yeah, I was thinking I'd just move the mount...anything I can do to help prevent this from happening again on the remount? Anyone wanna trade me some Sally or 4FRNT bindings for the scratch 120's that I have now?

make sure your core is good... if the screw rusted in there that means moisture came into contact with the core/glue, if it wasn't sealed make sure its not going to rot out... if it gets wet they'll just keep pulling out, I would contact the seller and demand atleast a fee for remount... total remount
