SO,

I've had my G2 (your "drive on your own" license) for almost a year. I'm 17 in gr 12.

No tickets, Nothing wrong.

Untill yesterday.

I was on a semi-main street in toronto, and had my signal on to turn into a parking lot. A large SUV had stopped, and waved me on, and another lane of traffic seemed to be quite clear. I waited for one car to go by, and once i saw there were no other cars, started to roll into the parking lot.

You might guess what comes next.

BOOM.

Guy in a ford focus murks front end of my BMW 325xi wagon.

This ends up with me in fault, not yielding or whatever shit.

My entire bumper got moved over, some lubricant was leaking, the ball joint on my front right wheel snapped. Tire at about 20° past straight. No ticket thankfully, and the guy was super chill and didn't lay charges, and is paying his own repairs that are purely cosmetic.

I overheard the tow truck driver say that it was most likely around 6-8 gs of damage. But hopefully he's wrong.

NOW to my question. What will my insurance most likely jump to? I currently pay about 900 a year, because we don't have 3 cars, and that makes me not a primary driver.

Thanks....

spark notes:

Perfect driving record for almost a year

Got in my first accident yesterday, (i'm at fault)

Apparently 6-8 grand in damage

What will my insurance jump to if its currently $900

It just sucks that i got an accident this soon. I Almost went a different way to get to where i was going too.

My sister crushed the front end of a civic in our suv like 6 years ago when she was my age, and apparently she got a freebie from insurance, no spike, no charge. So i can only hope

yea but shes a girl. arent they more strict on guys? i think it depends on how old u are too

true. either you will be fucked by insurance, or get lucky and hopefully you have something called accident forgiveness, where the insurance company basically gives you 1 free pass and they forget it ever happened. until you get in another accident.

Yeah thats what i'm thinking.

And i'm at the worst demographic for a fuckin accident right now. 17 and a guy.

you say your not a primary driver, so your under your parents insurance. if they have pretty stellar driving records then your insurance should jump more than 100-200 dollars and only for a short period. I did close to the same thing as you when I was 18. My insurance was 600 dollars, and it jumped to 700. not a big issue. however the tow driver was most likely right. your damages will most likely be 6 to 8 grand.

yeah dude thta major blows. is that car yours or your parents? i cant remember

are your parents mad pissed? i could imagine them being pretty chill about it

Yea it was a shitty, but not an awful experience.

My parents are super chill, the guy that hit me was super chill, we befriended eachother actually.

^^ and i hope thats true. My parents have pretty damn good driving records. The other day my mom got pulled over for going 57 in a 40, and the guy asked if she'd had any sppeeding tickets lately, and she hadn't had one since 16. Shes 53.

if possible just dont do it thru ur insurance company so your rates dont go up. if the cops didnt get involved then no report was filed, right?

There was a ticket guy right where it happened. And it's illegal to move cars from the scene of an accident without permission isn't it?

A report was filed but the guy didn't lay charges.

exactly. if it's just the joint and some cosmetics you're not totally fucked, ball joint is a couple hundred bucks + labor, and just duck tape the bumper back together, get some spray paint and call it a day.

Did you misjudge how much space you had when you turned and the guy hit you? I'm not sure i understand what exactly happened

I thought insurance only went up 10% on your first incident? Maybe that's just the US. Bummer dude.

I was waiting to turn left into a parking lot, and an suv had stopped in the lane closest to me, so inside lane. I thought that there was no one coming in the other lane, as one car had passed and i couldn't see anyone. so i crept forward, and boom.

I don't think your parents will have that hard of a time paying your extra insuranance and to get the car fixed either.

i no how you feel i was driving and got rear ended, and the guy who hit me lied and said i was in reverse, at least you have the balls to admit you were at fault.

dont tell your insurance about it and pay for it on your own, start off by just paying for what NEEDS to be fixed. in the long run youll save money. then if you have money later pay for your bumper.

ahh, missed the BMW part.

I drive a Subaru with a whale sized dent in the driver door, courtesy of somebody backing into MY PARKED CAR........ I'm a little biased to not giving a fuck.

woahhh, Connor that suck mad balls especially cause it was a beamer. I think your insurance is going to find out eventually though so it might as well happen, and seeing as your parents have a clean record, you shouldn't be to killed by insurance rates although the damage sounds like its going to kill you haha. Tough luck man.

^hahaha ya but that still sucks

hard

anyways at least the guy who hit you didnt flip and make you pay for his repairs

When I used to live back in Canada, I got into 2 accidents both which weren't my fault. I was rear-ended on both occasions. The first time I was on the 401 dead-stopped just creeping and this bitch with 3 kids in her car was going about 60 and was paying attention to those little brats. She was actually feeding a baby at the time wasn't watching what was ahead of her. When she looked up she tried to pull into the shoulder and got my rear bumper and the entire drivers side panel. When she stopped she was about 4 cars in front of me. Naturally when the police came they immediately said it was my fault and how could this happen. Luckily I had three witness' who were dead-stopped next next to me who verified it was the woman.

My insurance still increased a f load. If your young and driving, anything you do wrong you are essentially fucked. I am sorry to say your insurance is def going up.

It's not anything that YOU do wrong, it's anything that GOES wrong. Of course the cops thought that someone stopped dead in traffic was at fault for being rear ended because a mother of 3 kids could NEEEVER get into an accident.

FUnny story actually. Last year I was going to work and when I arrived to park I notice 2 cop cars there, a whole circle of people, and one of the other staff I work with. So I park and ask her wtf happened and she said that this lady hit 5 parked cars in the parking lot trying to turn around. This has nothing to do with this thread but I thought I'd share because hitting 5 parked cars trying to turn around is pretty fuckin embarrassing haha
