Thinkin about applying for U of U as a fallback school..i have the grades and scores for it to be a cake walk for me to get in to but the parents are worried that its like overly religious/becuase of that i wont fit in...i keep telling them theres a shitload of chill people(aka skiers) who go there and its not all religious mormon people..is anything im saying true..or are they pretty much spot on with the religious idea? ...basically..question is how are the people at U of U?

i transfered here from another school of similar caliber and id say the people here are as cool or cooler than my old school. most people arent mormon and its not a big deal if they are. they dont push their religion on you at all and some of the coolest people i know are mormon or jack mormon. if it really bothers you that much then you have some problems.

haha i dont give a shit if there mormon..i could care less people are free to do what they please...just wondering how chill/fun people are..

Ya that's not true, 97% of my friends at the U are non-mo's from out of state. And the mormons I know don't bite anyway.

i could have gone to duke/yale and i am extremely happy that im goin to the U instead... Its super chill and the mormon population doesnt even make any difference, besides SLC being super nice. From ohio so i had the same worries as you initially but believe me you have nothing to worry about

let me clarify, you got accepted to yale and decided to go to the U? that's gonna sting in 20 years.

I find it mildly entertaining the way people think Utah is, with so many skiers here there is no way that there are not cool people. Its not like you're going to Pakistan or some shit.

haha check out the U's biomedical engineering program and you would understand.. probably one of, if not the best research/undergraduate biomed programs in the country.. people lump colleges into categories instead of looking at individual programs, i love it out here

Yeah this is very true. The U has come crazy research programs in many of the engineering departments. And the medical department is HUGE. The U hospital is excellent.

You'll be fine. One of my friends didn't come out here because he thought his grandparents would disown him, as they were convinced that if he moved to Utah the "mormons would get him to convert". Pretty silly. I wouldn't want to go to school anywhere else in the state, but the U is legit, I loved all my time there.

like said above.. it's the university of Utah in downtown SLC. It's not BYU.

haha that's so rad. i'd be completely down to go into medicine, but that would involve math and chemistry, which have both bullied me throughout my life.

youll fit in fine man. Im not mormon and from out of state too, so i was a little worried coming here this fall. everyone from out of state almost is a chill skier or boarder. there are plenty of parties and the mormons arent that bad... if you can handle "soaking" that is haha

yea dude haha im pumped..its my back up to u denver..filled out the app today just gota put in the essay and resume and shit..gettin stoked

there is a great skiing community up here, I have lived in salt lake my whole life (and no I AM NOT FUCKING MORMON) The U is a pretty good school, and honestly if you love to ski it is 45 minutes away from the mountains you can't beat that.
Mormons do kind of suck, with the drinking laws and shit, but the snow makes up for it.

i'm looking into colleges now and this one seems mad legit. good majors, and 45 minutes away from park city. any more info i should know?

also 45 minutes or less from canyons, brighton, solitude, snowbird, alta, and deer valley. And virtually infinite backcountry access.

sent out the app 2 days ago...and first quarter senior year got a 4.0....think im a sure shot?

I don't see why he's an idiot. You're saying the huge control the church has over the city (especially back when the laws were made) has nothing to do with them?

so i applied and will probably get in..but not sure if parents will let me go...they are worried its not as good of an education as i could be getting other places...

I also justified transferring from a better business school to here because I wanted to work in the ski industry and I figured the connections I could make out here would contribute more to my future than the name at the top of my degree. I'm not really pursuing a ski industry career anymore, but just living out here without trying I have definitely made enough connections to find work in the industry if I wanted to.

What do you want to study/do?

It's not too much where you get your education these days but what you do with it. Getting a degree at the U might not compare to ivy league schools, but that doesn't mean you are going to unsuccessful in your life.
Either way, the U still offers a great education and I think is an underestimated school. Especially medical.

im gonna do international business...plus arabic which ive been taking for like 3 years now..

I'd strongly disagree...a lot of people are in that situation. If we like to ski, we like to ski. Deal with 20 years in 20 years.

amen brother.. plus full scholarship compared to having to take out loans to pay for a 50k school a year just to say that i went to yale just isnt worth it

yea dude. plus my brother went to yale and said the girls were nasty. he says the only reason he enjoyed his experience there was because he was on the baseball team, and that he would have hated it as a normal student.

yeah im sooo pumped i came here instead.. cool people, awesome skiing, cool teachers, and a shit ton of money to be made

you didnt know how close it was to all of this shit? park city (besides deer valley, but who goes there?) is the farthest away, and it takes about 30 minutes. there is no other major school (that I know of) that can beat the proximity to skiing here.

also since there are so many skiers theres always people goin out to hit urban or the setups around campus.. just a good vibe

if i remember right you dont need one.. this may be wrong but i really dont remember having to write one for the UofU. And if there was one, it was obviously such a joke i dont remember it
