U of U or UNR

And to people worried about the mormons, what really is the issue with them? They're super nice, keep the city clean, and don't generally bother you (unless you are so self-righteous you can't take 5 minutes to talk to an 18 year old kid that comes to your door, or at least tell them you aren't interested). Mormon chicks are generally hot, and a lot of them are a good time (seriously). Sure the liquor laws are kind of annoying, but really the problems are getting to the liquor store before closing (an issue in a lot of states) and the regulated shots (again a lot of states have this).

Seriously. The liquor laws are hardly different than any other state. If it's too much trouble to get to a liquor store by 10:30 pm, then college will probably be way to much to deal with also. Salt lake is pretty sweet, mormons are nice, they cook pretty decent food. Almost everybody out here is from New England, California, Tahoe or Nevada anyways, and they all came here to do the same thing. Ski, party and get educated.

By there and kicking, I hope you mean stuck in the middle of the ocean and kicking for dear life just to stay alive.

Basically you live there for a year minus a few trips back home, have your parents declare you independent on their taxes, and get a Utah license. Then in summer you apply for residency and they usually give it to you unless they can prove you were gone for more than 30 days.

If you're not Mormon you won't hang out with a Mormon crowd and will therefore not notice the Mormons. Party scene in Utah is definitely legit if you're looking for it. Fuck the frats here they honestly suck dick and serve no purpose other than to be the biggest fucking chads/tool bags you've ever seen. Academics are top 100 in the world ranked every year. Snow isn't that big of a deal in the winter it was kind of annoying last year just cause we got so much. I would say Utah 1000% over UNR

Pretty much.

Freestyle team is not good at all.

Talked with the chair and he was a fucking tool too.

As far as the racin part of the team, they're decent but since they aren't NCAA anymore, nobody gives a shit and unfortunately the whole team (club) will probably go under soon.

Are you guys serious about the Ski and Ride club? When I left in 09 it was doing pretty well and the leadership seemed alright.

That's really sad to hear that it has tanked in that small amount of time.

Come on you two! Impeach that bitch and take that shit over.

Yeah. It's the winter sports club now and it's not doing so hot.

The racing is way more organized (or seems so) compared to the freestyle team.

They aren't getting as much funding anymore because they're a team and none of the resorts have really stepped up either. They want you to get a Squawpine pass to practice and northstar to compete.

And I would help out with them, but 1 I'm not very good at park, I would be doing alpine or skicross if I joined; 2 there's no help. It will be all of my time to do this stuff and not really anyone at the school or outside will put in 100% effort.

I talked with the chair of the race team and he had his shit together and knew what he was talking about (or at least sounded like it) and it made the freestyle chair look that much worse.

The kid looked like an idiot to begin with and it got worse as he talked. He didnt know as much as he should have and he wasn't doing much to recruit. There's plenty of good park skiers at UNR, but none of them want to join the team anymore because it's not as good as it should be.

Nevada! Even though it's in Reno, it's still a kick ass school. The campus is beautiful, the vibe is great (not so much a skiing vibe), top rated for engineering, close to the mountains, and tuition is WAY cheaper. Growing up near campus, I never wanted to go to Nevada, but now that I'm here, I would regret not going here. Maybe I'm biased because it's my home town uni, but really it's great.

Definitely consider it more!

I'd fucking love to take it into my own hands and make it great, unfortunately I'm leaving Reno and going to school in Oregon. Rimjobber can do it though, I have faith

Word up, man. Ducks?

@Rimjobber. All it takes is one person. If it's some shitty "team" now, then start a club. It takes minimal effort and if you get people involved, all it takes is chipping in for gas. Do it man. When I was on it, it was basically 5 snowboarders, 4 skiers, and myself (making 5 skiers) and we pretty much treated it like a carpool system and had a blast riding together.

They are a club right now so I don't think I could make another.

And I think it would be way easier to just contact nsers and carpool up making our own group. I would love to do the team though. Probably next year when I have more time.

Nevada is a much better school UU isn't close academically. Tahoe has the edge in terms of terrain but Utah's snow is a little better. Tahoe's college passes cannot be beat.

But Utah is a good place. I wouldn't move there as an adult knowing noone but as a college freshman that would probably be a good time to move to Utah. Normally it would be no question asked Reno is the better city to live in than SLC, but as a college freshman its close. You probably can't go wrong.

I know Reno better and Reno is awesome, my fav city anywhere (Ive been in Vegas last 5 weeks and would give anything to be in Reno instead of here fucking Vegas...) but if you are 18 you have a while until you can go into the casinos so that might not be a good thing to base your decision on that. The local people ruin Reno. Hate to say it but Vegas locals have a laid back vibe that Reno doesn't have which stinks. Theres a weird demographic where 40% of the residents are extremely stuck up and strait edge the people you'd expect find in Provo Utah, and 40% are white trash lowlifes. So only 1 in 5 locals is normal and someone who can enjoy the good stuff the city has like the casinos and party atmosphere without being a homeless meth addict. Most normal people in Reno are people who moved from California.

And no one skis literally if I talk to 10 locals in the sportsbooks for more than 2 minutes not even 1 skis (very weird how few people ski in Reno I have a hard time understanding it.)

Go to UNR and get the better degree IMO.

Like you said stuff like ski club is something you do once or twice to check it out then do your own thing with people you like better. He's gonna be a freshman he may or may not make friends who ski no reason to not check it out and bounce if you don't like the vibe. Always good to have as many options to ride to the mountain with.

I did a weekend trip with my college ski "team" met a couple chill people but decided trying to race wouldn't be worth it or worth the time and commitment, and I didn't like most of the people enough to want to hang with them in the fake frat way club teams inevitably are. Them hiring a coach was pretty sad and pathetic too, one of the reasons I never played club hockey in college was because the teams my school played didn't have coaches but ours did despite sucking. In both sports I was better than most kids but wasn't good enough to shit on them so that I'd start races or get first line ice time over kids a little worse than me but who'd been doing it for 2 years.

After spending a day walking around slc and the u it's way different then what I was expecting. However where do you even buy alcohol around here.

1. You're a fucking idiot.

It depends what you want to study. He said he wanted to study Geology or an earth science. Sure, U of U will probably have a better English or maybe even Business (even though UNR has a great one) department, but they're gonna be shit compared to the Mackay school at UNR. Nevada is ranked 63 in the US for their whole earth science department, which you might think is low, but considering Utah's program isn't ranked in the top 150, that shows something. UNR was built off of the earth science program. Its going to be richer in history and more rooted in the university than at UofU. Ask anyone in the Mackay school about it and they'll all be damn proud to be in it.

So yeah, get shit on.

Come on man, everyone knows US News rankings become completely meaningless once you get outside the top 50.

The only downside to attending Nevada is it will go from very good to average if you take your degree East of the Mississippi (no alumni network and every Eastern state and metro area has plenty of similar 4 year institutions most of which obviously will have more alums kicking around in those parts) on the west coast the school literally only has only a couple superiors in all fields of study that matter.

UNR is way better than its instate rival UNLV academically. UU is way inferior to its in state rival BYU academically.

In terms of out of state students UNR attracts much better ones. UNR is a school kids who can't get into UW, Cal Berkley, Stanford, UCLA attend. UU is where people too dumb to get into Boulder go.

Unlike CU and UU it doesn't have an enormous rich east coast idiot element you can use that against UNR if you want since those 2 schools pay the bills attracting a lot of kids too dumb to get into anywhere good but it should work in UNRs favor. Im from a very big, very rich, and very competitive town in Boston CU Boulder was where EVERYONE who got shut out of all the good schools they applied to went since most parents in our town were Ivy like grads or similar and pushed their kids like crazy to get into a good school it was a total status symbol where you went and for about 30 kids in my graduating class Boulder was their only option other than going to a shitty East coast school or their complete safety if that wasn't CU. And most of them were actually good students and trust me they were the smartest kids at CU everyone who went there told me how dumb everyone was and how easy it was. UU is worse than CU just like its worse than BYU.

Etc etc etc. If you plan on working and living in the pacific or mountain time zones rest of your life UNR is an excellent school there aren't many better than it and most states that border Nevada other than California don't have a superior flagship public university (its pretty much equal to Eugene and UofA but better than UU OSU ASU BoiseSt Idaho.)

U of U all day. reno could be fun but then again its fucking reno which is the asshole of america. this is not to say salt lake is not shitty in some parts (aka west valley aka zombieland), but its definitely a lot nicer than reno especially near the university.

Statistics, well-founded information, and love for your school are all amazing things to have. The hard truth in the grand scheme of things are that the two schools are on the exact same level. Allow me to elaborate.

When you exit college, degrees are basically lumped into three categories:

1. IV League

2. Universities/State Colleges

3. Community Colleges

For 95% of the paths you'll take after college, the only thing that matters is that you hold a piece of paper saying you completed a course of study from either number one or number two.

There are only two reasons that acquiring an IV degree would matter. Either you're going into politics, or you're trying to attend an IV league graduate program.

The ranking of your school might matter also if you're trying to get into med school or law school, but the more important thing is your GPA, class rank, and well-roundedness as a person.

For the rest of your jobs out there, all people care about is that you finished something from an accredited school. they won't even check the ranking of your school. They don't fucking care. They'd rather see that on top of getting a 3.75 GPA, you also held a part-time job, were in and/or ran some kind of on-campus club or extracurricular activity, or did something else to better your community. They want to see that not only can you absorb information like a boss and write papers and prove yourself as a student, but also that you can be a contributing member of society while you do that.

So in the end, like I said in the first place, you can't go wrong with either, just pick a place you'll be happy.

Yea I figured it out. It's just very conservative vs. where I live in Colorado. But I do like salt lake and U of U a ton.

I'm going to go ahead and call big loads of bullshit on this. I'm sorry, but this really isn't true. Go talk to any kind of a hiring manager at a major company. They have their favorite schools that they always look for kids from. Generally, these are the schools with the higher rank. For example, Bard medical hires a large majority of their workers from pac 12 schools. In addition, school rankings are also largely based off of the network of alums that are from the school. Great alums = great connections = getting a job. If a school doesn't hook you up with any connections relevant to your field then it can be pretty difficult getting noticed when you're 1/50 applicants for a position.

i know business doesnt matter to you BUT,Utah is a top 50 all around business school

accounting program is number 21.

If your decision to not come to utah is because of the booze and mormon thing, Please don't come then. It Means less dick knobs on the mountain for me and my friends.

I have talked to many hiring managers and discussed the topic with people are many large companies, and it's not bullshit.

There's a difference between school ranking mattering, and your alma mater happening to be a favorite of a particular hiring manager.

Like I said, there are scenarios where rank matters, but the majority does not. And 5 years after you've graduated, your school means absolute shit and it all falls on work experience. It's sad, but true.

Im Currently at unr and enjoy it. Being so closes to Tahoe but still in a city is really nice. I bet you'd be happy with both. I was born in mammoth and lived in Reno for most of my life, I like it here. Tahoe is sick in winter and summer.

I lived in Reno for the last 7 years and have gotta say UNR. It really boils down to what you want to study though. Reno always has something going on,is close to world class skiing and has a pretty good vibe. Midtown is going thru a revival and has some awesome restaurants, Bibos (coffee shop) is right off campus and has the best in town.

Reno all the way.

Not even applying to U of U. Accepted with pretty decent financial aid to UNR and 98% am planning on going there next fall. Stoked to be moving back to Reno after two years away!

Sweet! I'm working up there as a lift op and I'll be up there almost everyday of break. Hit me up if you wanna carpool or shred

Deciding between these 2 schools plus Western Washington. Want to know what your guys thoughts on which school is best in terms of academics and everyday life, I will be going into the business program at one of the schools. At western I can get instate, but at UNR and U of U I can get WUE which doesn't make the price all that bad. Opinions NS?

I can only speak to the U but it does have a pretty good business school that is getting better by the year. Also it is extremely cheap once you get in state.
