U of U or MSU

Prolly MSU, legal weed, better booze laws, and definitely easier to get to skiing. Plus Bozeman is a better place to live than SLC.

The is a non-insignificant amount of NSers who went to either school. That should tell you to avoid those scools like the plague.

UNR Lake Tahoe - literally in the middle of it all

Soooo any tips on how to make this happen because I was DEVASTATED when SNU shut down and if I could make this would be a dream come true. Please respond I'm very upset about it tbh

I went to SNU when it was Snc. Honestly I think you just have to figure out the major you want to take and then do it. It’s still UNR. It truly is in the middle of everything. It’s wild. I would call UNR admission and ask and do some research but it’s gotta be possible

Dude I've been calling almost every week since May, people just tell me they don't know or it's going to be an environmental science center only...I'm pretty jealous of u ngl

Neither, fuck college. Go do a trade or coding.

Unless you know what you want to do, it’s easy to waste away in it. Just dipped with an associates degree, and I’m doing a software engineer bootcamp, already got apprenticeships lined up once I’m done. Woulda gone into welding or a mechanic job if I didn’t do web stuff

You should base your decision on your permissiveness of drunk driving I would say that is the core difference.

Bridger mainly, might grab a big sky or ikon pass soonish I think

Check out if big sky still has the flex 3 or 5 going. Unlimited early and late season and 3 or 5 days main season, which works great with bridgers dates.

I forget if they are still on sale or not, or just poach a BS pass, fuck their management.

The amount of Montana State vs Utah threads Ive seen over the years... my god.

Yeah cause they both have good skiing, and both will let you in if you can spell your name correctly on the application.

Wow, your not kidding... 95% acceptance rate at the U

Why would anyone even go to Weber State or UVU when U of U takes literally everybody

Yup, exactly.

MSU was easy for me to get into and I got decent scholarships, plus I didn't even have to write an essay- just 2 reasons why I wanted to go!

The caveat of both schools is they have a tremendous dropout rate. MSU has a graduation rate of 51% and that's actually a lot better than past years. Like by the end of freshman year roughly 1/3 of all my friends had either dropped out or transferred schools. So it's easy for a lot of people to get in- but a lot never finish.

That makes sense in Utah, where half of the girls are only there to find husbands. What made so many drop out at MSU? Just the draw of being a full time ski bum?

I didn't apply to either, but I have little doubt I'd have been accepted lol. They have lower standards than almost any school in California.

California schools can actually be pretty hard to get into depending on what one you're looking at.

It's part of why so many Californians go out of state lol

I went to school in Oregon for a specific programme, but yeah, even the CSU's have higher requirements than most state schools elsewhere.

Different programmes. Cheaper costs. Smaller class sizes. Not wanting to live in SLC. Scholarships. Etc.

SLC is far better than ogden or orem brother man

I don't disagree personally, but of course, that's subjective.

Some people might want to stay closer to home or not live in SLC where it's more expensive (if indeed it is more expensive to live there - just my hunch that it is)

they also have $100,000 in student debt

Nah, just live there for a year and then get in state or scholarships, my sister is doing that rn and it's gonna cheaper than our state school lol

CU is montana state but more absolutely insufferable rich people and less granola people. i guess it’s montana state if you like partying and shitty frat parties.

"party scene" is by far the most overrated metric for incoming freshman. youre gonna party and have fun at whatever college you go to.

Not true at all, especially in actual cities

I've been in your exact shoes, I thought partying was a big deal too. Its not a big deal, dont pick a school because "it looks fun" pick a school in a location you prefer with programs you want to study.

and what do you mean "actual cities"? how does that affect the college at all? some of the biggest party schools are in small towns.

We're on the same page, I'm speaking from experience cuz I went to school in Boston and if you don't have a fake ID you aren't doing shit on the weekends, it's not like people have houses and the ones who do usually don't throw bangers frequently. But yeah I mean you don't have to go to school to party, but if you're trapped in a city with not a lot of money and no car it's pretty miserable. I think college would have been less depressing if I didn't go to school there, I made great friends but the actual experience was genuine hell for 4 straight years. I think it's valuable to go somewhere affordable where you'll actually enjoy your time as opposed to drinking everclear and wandering the streets at night or playing video games all day

Oh i see, youre saying its worse in a big city. I thought you were implying that CU was the best choice because "it looked fun" but i think i just misunderstood.

Bro ngl it kind of sounds like you squandered your college years drinking everclear and playing videogames instead of going out and doing stuff.

First of all: "trapped in a city without a car" is a total Oxymoron- especially a larger city like Boston that has its own subway and public transportation system, and I know students probably got discounted metro cards too. You could have literally spent a bit of time learning routes and then been able to go wherever you wanted, whenever you wanted.

Also a city of 650,000 people and no house parties? Come on dude- lets be real, you probably just weren't getting invited to any of them. And don't even tell me you couldn't find a bar to drink in... it's the Irish capital of the US and there wasn't a single bar you could get into?

Idk dude, a city as large and diverse as Boston would have been a blast to live in, there's literally so much to do there, it kinda bewilders me how you couldn't find anything to do? Like ig if you just spent all your time drinking everclear and playing videogames it would have sucked, but it doesn't sound like you really made an effort to enjoy it. I think you would have been just as equally miserable in Boulder- especially if you consider Boston expensive.

Caught with a fake in high school so didn't have one in college, the T only services Boston so technically you're still "trapped" within Boston by using it, amtrak tickets to go away for the weekend cost almost as much as plane tickets, house parties aren't common in the city and the ones I went to weren't fun, we either went to parties at UMass Amherst or just pregame and go to bars (which i would then have to go home instead of to the bars), its genuinely not common for people to throw house parties and the house parties are always just in someones dimly lit basement. There's not a lot of free stuff to do and definitely nothing like mtb, hiking, skiing, rock climbing that you can access without a car which my college didn't allow us to have (very common for boston if you arent a commuter). It's fun to visit but if you're living there with no money it's not fun you mostly just skate around and smoke and drink. Also the beaches suck so it doesn't even have the benefits of being a coastal city.

I'll vouch for their punk scene though, those shows are pretty cool. I wouldn't say squandered either, like yeah being poor in college in an expensive city sucks but I have no debt so life now is way better. I've been back there a few times and when you have money and are over 21 it's fun, but its not like a mountain town college, there was no bus to a ski resort or fun rock climbing in your back yard, you couldn't surf at the beaches (honestly I don't even think it's safe to swim in the water frequently there).

I feel you- and you definitely made the right move going to a place you can afford and not having debt. Ik people with hundred of thousands of debt cause they wanted to go to go to school somewhere fun- so power to you for toughing it out.

But idk, personally I’ve lived in both cities and small towns and I would 100% rather be broke in a city than be broke in a little ski town. Don’t get me wrong, I love the outdoors just as much as the next NS’r. But cities have so much awesome stuff that a lot of people overlook and if you know where to live it’s so cheap. Some of my best memories growing up were taking the city bus from highschool to downtown and then skating government center or riding around the city for a bit. So I might be biased.

Like I don’t mind small towns but I feel a lot more trapped than I did in the city. To each their own though I guess, can’t blame ya. I’ve lived in Bozeman for a bit and all it’s really made me think: is that there’s more to life than skiing.

I dunno man, I went to two different schools during my time in University - one in a large coastal California City, and one in a rural Oregon mountain town. I promise you I had just as much fun in both, but in far different ways.

I was in Worcester but this is my exact experience Freshman year as well.

(Luckily Worcester is a little more lawless and there were a few bars that would serve underage but I was shocked to find myself going out to bars vs. house parties as an 18 year old.)
