U of California at Berkley

my brother goes there and if you join ther skiteam/club you can get really cheap kirkwood passes. i am pretty sure he paid less then 200

the best one is squaw which is about 30-45 minutes away from sugarbowl. thats (on a normal about a 3.5-4 hour drive

Thats just ignant dude...

Doesnt matter what college you go to in California buddy, you're going to find asians...

in fact.. doesnt matter what school you go to in the COUNTRY theres going to be asians, so dont be a racist bigot and can your ass.

Lol.. like there arent any asians at Loyola? Dude, I had a friend who used to go there, and she was straight up Japanese... so what the heck are you trying to say...

berk is sick.. ive gotta couple friends who go there... but they had above 4.0 all through high school..... uhhmm well boreal is closest.. but it sucks ass, well i guess the park is okay, but the actual skiing is just like.. boring as fuck. itll be like a 2 hr drive 2.5 hours too.. but you might as well go the extra 30 minutes with the option of squaw, northstar, heavenly, etc.. uhmm but since your in tthe bay area you should prolly go to kirkwood. i used to live in sacramento and i could never go to kirkwood becazuse the quik road to it is closed in the winter, and unless your from the bay area it'll take going around the entire lake. also there is bear valley(not bear mtn. 2 diff places), i think this is close.. my auntie lives in san jose and this is where she goes. but it sucks, not much snow, and the lift workers are like.. carnies.. gross.

Yeah, from Berkeley its more like a 3 hour drive with the traffic. I live 30 mins from Berkeley, and it takes me ussually 2 1/2 hours if I'm driving fast... that is if i'm want to go to Sugar Bowl or Boreal. It takes 3 hours for Squaw and Alpine ussually.. but its so worth it. I mean, the Bowl is alright, but Alpine and Squaw are like crack to its pot...

yea its definitely worth the extra 30 minutes to go to alpine or squaw. i bet berkeley has some sort of ski club dealie where you can take a bus up there for the day, or maybe a weekend if berkeley has a cabin up there. my friend was telling me that uc santa cruz has a ski club that charters buses to go up for a day, and they leave a 6 pack of beer under everyone's seat at the beginning of the day

I know UC Berkeley has a camp.. but thats at Echo Summit, and I think its closed during the winter.

But they do have charters that come through from Oakland that go up to Boreal and Sugar Bowl. Ussually not to Alpine though.. you have to go on the right dates...

well, at least for the line that I'm thinking of..

no way

WAY more mexicans up near us and down south near san diego

the asians chill in SF sactown and chico

Haha. Hey, I was just going off Princeton Review's numbers...

I bet there are more asians at Riverside than any other UC because they dont worry about extracurricular activities like many of the other UC's.

You cant just get into school with good grades anymore i guess... you need to do something else outside of school. ha.

But yeah.. lots of asians everywhere in this state. PERIOD.

haha you have no idea what you are talking about pertaining to colleges. asians do tons of extracurriculars. and uc irvine has the highest percentage of asians in the uc system.

Hey hey hey.. slow down homie..

I'm not saying asians DONT do extracurricular, I'm just saying a lot of them are focused on school primarily, and perhaps music secondary... which most colleges just see as another academic discipline.

Its a cultural thing really. Sports and other high end extracurriculars are not always on the list of things to do.

We are talking about UC Berkeley here... UC Berkeley gets so many apps in every year, that they have the ability to pick and choose who they want. They are going to choose the most active people thaty can find. People who not only have an insanely high GPA, but also people who are extremely passionate about something other than school.

For example, my cousin had a 4.4 gpa out of high school. Top 1% of latina students in the country. Didnt get into Cal. She didnt really have any other extracurricular activity on record other than traveling, playing guitar, and volenteer work at her church. She got into NYU instead. Not bad.

Meanwhile... my friend Lo DID get into Cal. She was a 2 sport athlete with a 3.85 gpa. She skiied, did theatre performances, volenteer work at the theatre, etc etc etc.

This is how many of the UC schools are like. UCSF, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSC, and UCSB are all very much like this.

Davis, Riverside, Irvine, Merced are less focused on extracurricular activities, and more on academic prowace. That doesnt say they arent good schools that merely says that they are not as desirable to go to.. most likely because of locaction (All the other UC's are located ON the ocean Location.location.location)

With all that said, any UC is a good place to go to school. They all have pros that outweigh the cons, and they have awesome educational records. Dont let the asians scare you... asians are abundant at ANY college...

Oh, and unless you go to UCSC, UCSB, and UCSD, (where you would be right on the ocean, and be able to surf all year instead) you're going to be within 3.5 hours of tahoe, or within an hour or two of Bear Mountain/Baldy/Mthigh.

FIN.

well if you go to berkley you are going to go to alpine on the weekends sometimes and your going to stop at ikedas, which is unbelievable food, in trukee. if your smart ull go to squaw instead

I'm trying to go to berkley or UC davis for grad school. Anyone know aynything about either of those two grad schools.

I mean what SUBJECT. not actual degree...

and no, i havent taken classes there, but having several friends that go there full time, I at least can give you an Idea of what its like...

Berkeley has a cabin near Sugarbowl, I think. I seem to recall seeing it when we drove the sugarbowl/norden exit. And I've seen the UC Berkeley ski team at Alpine more than once (they schooled my ass in foozball a couple of times).

Soo yeah, I think a ski team exists.

mmmmm, college alpine drinking teams. Nothing like paying hundreds of dollars a year to get wasted at 6,500 feet.

shoot did I say drinking!...*ehem* skiing...alpine skiing team, how could I get those two words confused in relation to a college club "racing" team?

man shut up.

if anyone in this whole thread is racist and ignorant, it's you!  you can't lump asians or asian americans as an entire group and just say that academic excellence or a lack of extracurriculars are "a cultural thing really."  extracurricular activities, academic prowess, and attitude vary from individual to individual and subculture to subculture.  you ought to recognize this yourself, unless you enjoy being stereotyped yourself as just another underachieving, weed-smoking, couldn't get into a UC action sports kid.

and as far as the individual UC schools... please stop babbling misinformation.  you're not a student there.  you have not experienced those schools firsthand.  no matter what some counselor may have told you, you're plain wrong about the admissions criteria of these universities.

it is great to contribute useful information to NS, but stick with what you actually know about: the driving time to some great resorts.  then maybe folks can actually learn something true from your posts instead of trying to filter through the bullshit of your own speculation.

The thread got on the subject of asians. I cant help that bro. and dont think I'm racist against them, because many of my best friends happen to be of asian decent. In fact, thats part of the reason I wrote the thread in the first place, because my homie who is taiwanese and goes to UCSanta Cruz, saw the thread and told me to write stuff. Perhaps it was unnecessary, but dont judge my character because of it bro.

Besides.. this is NS.. dont dare expect to agree with anything you hear. Call me out if you want, but remember you're just reading text...

i don't doubt that you're well-intentioned.  i'm just encouraging you, as an open-minded and accepting person, to remember that making generalizations about an entire racial group is in itself a kind of racism.  if anything, the sort of academic motivation and hard work ethic that you're talking about can be found among most groups of first-generation immigrants, not just first-generation asian immigrants.  now this is just an opinion, but i think you might find that second- or third-generation asian americans are just as likely to be interested in alternative social scenes or "high-level extracurriculars" as you or I.  i'm not saying that's a general fact, but it's just another thing to think about before you assume that all asians or asian americans share the same cultural values... right?

and i know that this is NS, and you can't believe everything you read.  but you know that too, so i'd expect you not to contribute misinformation in a thread asking for legit info about colleges.  why add to the pile of BS?

ucsf for example, is a graduate health science and biomedical research institution.  you can't even go there as an undergrad.  are you sure that they are focused on sports, music and other extracurriculars, or were you just saying that?

did you know that davis and irvine have significantly more applicants per year that ucsc, and place a high value on extracurricular activities in the application?  or did you just assume that they were less desirable to go to because YOU like the beach and they aren't close to it?

see what i mean?  it's really cool to share the personal experiences of those two friends of yours that got into berkeley, but to extrapolate the entire UC admissions criteria and to pass off your opinions of schools as fact doesn't really help unique individuals make an informed decision.

great intentions.  i don't doubt your character.  just stick to what you know.

and jex, if you'd like to learn more about davis, you can go to visit.ucdavis.edu and sign up for a campus tour.  i'd be more than happy to meet you at the visitors center where i'm employed to give prospective students accurate information.  it sounds like AnyMountainSkier and I both have some friends at Berkeley if you'd like to get put in contact with someone who actually attends that university.
