Hey I am an American thinking of going to UBC. Anyone know anything about how to get in as an international student? I hear that UBC is a good school- does it have a good reputation in Canada? Is it in a nice area? Any info would be great. Thanks

 
I think it is a pretty good school, its also hard to get in, u need like an 89% to get into science and 86 for art, the location is really great, the campus is in a huge park, youre close to a few beaches(one is a nudist one if your interested) and only like 1/2 hour away by busing, its really nice. And you get season passes for Whistler for 350 bucks.

I go to UBC, its lame, they dont call it Ugly Bitch College for nothing. There are perks like the whistler pass, but the nudist beach is old men, and women well past their prime. Thanks Nolan. You really don't like it? It looks pretty damn nice on the ubc website. I'm thinking UBC or maybe CU Boulder (I already got in). UBC also looks like it is pretty damn cheap. CU is like 34000 a year and UBC said it was !8000 Canadian for international students.

Yeah, if you're looking for hot girls, it's really not the place. UBC is a keener school with the exception of Josh. It has very high academic standards in almost every department, and generally high achievement as a result... as a school, we're rated 35th in the world as of this year by the SH Study, but yeah, you have to work a fair bit to do well. If you want to slack off, go to Langara or SFU or something. SFU still makes you work, though, actually. They just have a shitty faculty.

its a good school... my friend goes there but went to high school in the US... dual citizenship. He almost didnt get in though becuase our high school wasnt a part of some organization that UBC and other colleges look into before accepting people.. somthing like that.. basically the high school is worthless. And he had to take a bunch of extra core classes before he was accepted into the school of engineering..... so basically it was a pain in the ass for him but he loves it there... they have a huge ski/snowboard club that owns a giant cabin in whistler and they have beer gardens all the time. and they get super good deals on passes to whistler... 200 bucks canadian or somthin crazy i think. I always go party with him... its fun as hell up there

its not super well regarded in canada, but its a good school nontheless. i know people that have gotten into sciences there with low 80s. you could probly get a scholarship with those kind of marks depending on the compatibility of your courses etc.. but i would say that if you plan on working in the states, it may be worthwhile to go to colorado or whatever, so that potential employers can relate a bit easier. or try and get into mcgill in montreal. its a waaay better school and is pretty close to tremblant and some good eastern skiing.

I money, McGill is a lower ranked school internationally... UBC is second in Canada behind U of T. You really should look this stuff up before posting about it. As for US employability, I have no idea whether they're more likely to hire someone who went to school in the states (despite CU Boulder's lower academic standing). I guess it would vary depending on the employer.

Mattman: I know people who have been accepted with 86, and also peopl who have been rejected with anywhere between 82-88. It varies. 90 is about as high as it gets. It pretty much stays around that area for commerce at all times, and engineering, I think.

Actually it has 40,000 students, the campus is pretty massive. It is really fun though, you just have to get involved with a group, like the Ski and Board Club, Has the biggest greek system in Canada, Whistler passes are $384.13 with tax I am pretty sure. You do have to work hard, but at what University do you not? I got into sciences with 86% from BC, but i know they adjust the grades for where you are from. Also, they want more international students cause they pay more, so that might give you an advantage. But seriously if you have any more questions feel free to mesage me. I enjoy UBC.

 
Yeah our Uni do exchanges with UBC for a semester. I was thinking of doing it but not sure how well the cross credits work. Think a friend is trying to do it later this year so might just see where he goes. We also have exchanges with Uni of Victoria, whats better?

k, so everyone listen to JD as usual... except for the crack at me earlier... but uh, i applied with a 3.5 and a 1360 SAT and i was rejected from commerce, the first time, and i couldve gotten into arts. but then i went to another school for a year, got a 3.6 and transfered to UBC commerce... then i flunked out, took like a 50% grade hit... decided id like to keep my soul. but um... UBC's ok. I'm pretty sure if you're not in science your not going to get too many good profs... ive had 1 i can remember. If youre into sciences/engineering/commerce... i guess its a good place for you. I'm just kind of not a fan of vancouver. i was thinking hey, mountains everywhere, everyone will be nice and laid back... but its all intensely trendy and asian... which isnt for me. but uh... yeah. which program accepted you?

OK I'll explain how it works in BC, being a fine product of the BC high school system.

1)Everybody wants to go to UBC. Unfortunately people as a general rule are idiots so only a select of the smartest kids get in. Usually asian.

2) If you're not smart enough to get into UBC, you go to SFU. Like me.

3)If you don't get into one of the two universities but you still want to make an attempt at post secondary education you go to one of the community colleges. Anybody can get in. They're pretty much a joke compared to UBC or SFU. So the stupid kids actually do alright.

4)If you don't get into the community colleges it's only because you didn't apply or are the laziest bastard around. So then you go work or deal drugs.

Of course you could deal drugs at school... But that's a whole different story that we don't need to get into right now. Besides, you'd be encroaching on my turf.

i'm interested in going to UBC because of the location and the super sick skiing pass but i'm hearing that there aren't any hot girls, just asians. you can't be serious, i mean there must be SOME hot girls that are there. if i dont go to UBC, i'm gonna end up going to a school in ontario (not that their bad or anything) but then i won't get any decent skiing.

I go to CU. Lots of hot girls. 5 mountain pass for 320. Copper & Winter Park pass for 160 with a special deal. Buses run to Keystone and Breck on weekends. Its been 70 degrees here for the past week. Pretty sweet. And despite all the negative media attention it's a good school. You wanna work hard? Go engineering. You wanna dick around? Go Business. Highly recommended.

There are definitly hot girls, just not in the Chinese Varsity Club, or things like that. You have to LOOK in normal places to find them...Like the bars, on wednesday and friday nights. And if you cant find any hot ones you can at least find some slutty ones. But there definitly ARE hot chicks at UBC. Really. You just have to filter. With so many students and at least probably half are female, say , one in 20 is hot? then thats 1000 hot girls.

And getting to the beach is a bitch. 500 stairs to get down. Which wouldn't be so bad, but for the way up, and the fact that you're usually going there to get drunk, meaning that you'd have to climb 500 stairs hammered. It's not that great.

I don't understand all the hate on UBC, I dig the place. I almost went to CU Boulder, but I'm so glad I didn't. I do things other than drink my face off every weekend and it's super fun. I've got nothing against drinking as some may know, but not every weekend like my best friend at CU has wound up doing cause that's all anyone else is doing. UBC is a really pretty campus, Vancouver is a fun city, and I would recommend all of it, provided you can deal with rain and it doesn't depress you. It is extremely asain (Univeristy of Beijing China in Hongcouver), but it isn't like there aren't any white students. I suppose I should add in that I'm an American (Pennsylvanian) and I barely got in, I'd say if I were Canadian I wouldn't have gotten in. It's true about being academically challenging, I got that vibe when I came to visit last spring. The only reason I considered CU over UBC is because I thought UBC might be too academically challenging being the slacker that I am. I did struggle a bit first term, but if you're going to school for school then a bit of effort isn't so bad. I'm done with my ramble. Go for UBC.

j.d. may are you saying that it is a better school for international students or that its programs have better international recognition? and i dont know... guelph, where i go, is the best comprehensive school in canada, according to macleans, and im pretty sure mcgill is up there in just about everything, ive heard it being called the harvard of canada before, and i dont know anyone whos gotten in there with under a 90 in the ontario system. Maybe ubc and u of t are the best international school in canada or something, but that might be due to the fact that they are both 90% asian. again though, yuo never hear nething that is spectacular or renowned about either place. western has its ivey school of buiness, queens has its legendary engineers and school of buisness, mcgill owns sciences, guelph has the best... food.
