U British Columbia

guess it depends where you want to go to grad school and for what, i think thats kind of a generic statement. and all i was doing with the macleans reference was showing that i wasnt totally in the dark about where universities stand. Im just not aware of any other popular rating system for canadian universities. I think they rate alot of things based on the opinion of students aswell.

well anyways university ratings vary a lot, depending on what courses they offer and which ones are better for which university. Magill is a popular destination/wish for ppl that wanna go into art, because its in montreal and its bilingual and really good. The best university in canada ive heard is Queen's, in Kingston ontario. Seems like a really bad place to me tho. And UBCs campus is nice, how can u say pacific spirit park isnt nice?

Anything you read in a magazine rating schools is complete bullshit. They publish those things for self-gratification, don't even bother listening. McGill has a reputation, to be sure, but it's been going downhill in every relevant category since the 70s. Real rating studies are weighted heavily towards test scores and publications made by members of the faculty, but the one I was referring to goes so far as even to include nobel prize winners produced by the school... you can quesiton the ratings system, of course, but it's quite solid in my opinion. No school flies by on reputation, none gets by for having one standout department, nor for being spectacularly rich as far as donations go (Brown is 48th). It's based on results. Everyone likes to think their school is the best. I've seen SFU students saying their school is the best all-around in the country (and laughed my ass right off). But leave it to independent review boards, not magazines, and certainly not motivated bias.

I have no friggin' clue where Guelph is; McGill is in the top 100... mid 50s, I think. Can't quite remember.

All you guys who stated that UBC having lots of asians as a negative really need to look at yourselves. What is wrong with going to school with people of a different race than you, do they make you uncomfortable or something. I go to UBC and it is stange how all the white people and asians dont really mix, but I dont see any reason for that at all. The asians I know are all really cool, some are good at school work and study alot, but some are down with drinking and smoking weed. I know more white people who fit the traditional asian sterotype of staying in their room and studing all the time.

All the people who used UBCs large asian population as a negative, maybe you should try to enlighten yourselves and accually talk to some asian people, not just sit on the other side of the class room and assume they are all going home to study right after class.

Airdawg, the group I eat lunch with and hang around at school with is about half east indian, a third asian and the rest white. It's pretty diverse, I wouldn't say we don't mix. However, there are GROUPS of asians that are etremely self-contained, and they make up a huge proportion of the school's population. It is a negative in some ways in that half the time I can't talk to someone because they hardly speak english, or they're only INTERESTED in speaking Chinese, because they think there's no reason for them to use English when most of the people thye run into speak Chinese anyways. I live in Richmond, and trust me, there is a language barrier problem. It's mostly the parents, who don't speak english themselves and make no effort to persuade their kids to think otherwise... you get these parents coming in to high school classrooms all pissed, screaming in broken english off because their kid can't pass their arts classes, and they don't get that a large part of the cause lies with them. These same kids sqeak through gr12 english, get into UBC sciences, and never have to bother again. This seems to be acceptable, too, and recognized... friends of mine have Chinese math and chem profs they can barely understand, but they still get hired, which gives you some indication of what the science dept. views as 'good prof material'. Communication is not an issue; in English, anyways. It's not exactly a good solution we've got set up in the lower mainland... Canada's supposed to be a cultural mosaic, but nobody said anything about there being brick walls between the tiles. That's bothered me for a while, because it's not like they need to give up their cultural identity to open up a bit more and adding to the community rather than displacing a bit of their home country and putting it over on this side of the pond. The former would be better for both sides... at least, I think so.

Wow, that was a rant.

I had this raging post about the blatant racism emanating from all races at SFU, but JD nailed it before I could shoot my mouth off.

yeah, personally, i dont lkike people so i spend most of my time at ubc, outside of class and the gym, walking around with my headphones on trying not to get run over by asians. they just dont pay attention and they arent considerate (in general... that and i came from commerce, as asian as science and at least 3.8x as heartless). but basically i see most asian kids cruising with the newest clothes following the latest trends... and being whores in general. its the predominant mindset i see. im not saying the white kids dont do it too and im not saying that there are no cool asians... but basically... theres a lot of selfish fuckers out there.

funny jd, i said something quite similar to your rant on cultural diversity in a DL thread last night, and assumed you all would feel the same way. i feel like a prophet who lived to see his prophecy come true the very next morning.

ps, carleton u is similar to ubc, but instead of it being primarily asian, it is 1/4 indian, 1/4 arab, 1/4 asian, and 1/4 canadian. and when i say indian/asian/arab, i mean they come directly from that geographical location to carleton u. the amount of people who freaked because they saw snow here for the first time in their lives was just comical.

^^if by decent you mean reputable, then yes. if you mean well taught, logically planned and even the slightest bit enjoyable, no. that and im under the impression that its like 5x harder than business schools in the us in general and you get a very narrow education... if you like cubicles... go for it.

yup Jd_may got it all down, this town is great but there are just so many asians now that they dont even need to integrate with canadians(although when I moved here most friends I made were chinese and I still hang out with them now), in chinatown there is hardly anyone is those grocery stores that smell like shit that speaks english, this is not a generality of course, but many asians at my school only hang out with other asians. Also UBCs chinese population is like only rich asians, they all own their Acura TSX or their BMW 500, its pretty crazy and pretty bad.

Hey thanks everyone. I still haven't made my mind up on schools, but after reading all of this I'm thinking it might not be worth all the trouble to apply as an international student. CU actually does have a good entrepreneurial business program (Number 1 Doctoral in the US by Forbes), which is what I want to do.

right now im tryin to decide ubc or mcgill for next year. my main concern was not wanting to move so far away (from toronto). i had thought ubc was paradise till i read this thread. now im not so sure. keep the info comin if theres anything else i should know.

as mcgill alumni and current ubc student i feel i should put my 2 cents in for ya.

ubc and mcgill are two totally different worlds. bear in mind that i didnt do my undergrad at ubc so my perspective is somewhat skewed.

mcgill is is an old school, relatively small campus with a good vibe. the people are there because a. its a good school b. they want to have fun. the majority are super laid back.

in terms of partying and the city, no where and i mean no where beats montreal. if you're looking for big rowdy house parties and keggers this place might not be for you (although they do exist), you'll spend all your time at the bars minutes from campus. you're also gonna get a crazy frosh, and lots of really drunken campus events. montreal is just an amazing place to be.

in terms of ubc and vancouver, so far i just haven't gotten nearly the same vibe. maybe its because i haven't met the right people but they seem more serious, more into the books and less about going out and having fun. but i did move out here for the skiing. i that respect, if it wasn't such an incredibly bad snow year out west, vancouver kills montreal. there are some decent spots (jay peak) in the vicinity to have some fun at and a few good parks but if you want the real stuff it isn't there.

so all i can say is that you've gotta weigh your priorities... partying, chill place, great city, alright skiing = mcgill .....

stupidly good skiing, alright city, more serious people, great outdoors activities = ubc

good luck with your decision!

p.s. i was faced with the same decision before university and chose mcgill and don't really regret it. i'm in bc and at ubc now anyways!

Adding to the point that Trevorwoulddoit made about how it works in BC...

If you don't have the grades to get into UBC, you can go to a community college and take a transferrable course, which means if you do well enough for about 2 years, you can transfer to UBC or SFU, and continue the remainder of whatever you are taking at that college.

It's a good way to do it, I know a few people who are doing it... well... trying.

and hay kev, the international application process isnt actually all that tricky if thats a concern. i think you just have to fill out one extra form or something, then when youre on your way up to move in or whatever you just show the customs people at the border your letter of acceptance, sign a few more things and your good to go.

JD, you said it... there are totally 2 groups of Asians. The 'westernized asians, that you dont even notice they are asian, and the ones that are still living in asia. Either way, a lot of asians at UBC is not a bad thing at all, its the ones that dont branch out, and keep to their own group that are frustrating.
