Tuckerman/Mt Washinton thread

Pretty icy up on Mt. Washington yesterday. Was able to skin up from the parking lot and ski all the way down the sherburne trail to my car which was nice, but I think that's probably only gonna be possible for another week or so. There's tons of snow still in the bowl, but crevasses are opening up under the center/headwall area. It's mentioned in the avy report, but just be aware if you're headed up.

Wish we could have gotten after it more, but it was bulletproof. I didn't see anyone climb above the bottom of the bowl. We sent it up left gully and ended up turning around about halfway when we hit a nasty sheet of ice. Skiing was rough and chattery, not much to brag about. Ended up just calling it and heading back to Boston early. There'll be other days.

Should be way better with the nice weather on the horizon if anyone can get up there during the coming week. With the cold and wind, I didn't take my hands out of my mittens to take many pics. I'll put one up when I transfer them to my computer.

What was the weather forecasting for yesterday up there? I am trying to plan a trip for friday. I hope it will soften up the weather is saying about 38 degrees for Mt. Washington. But down in the valley close to 60 so who knows. Im keeping a eye on it

Monday

Absolutely unreal day skiing Tuckerman Ravine at Mount Washington! Been watching the weather for weeks and made the last minute decision to head up and ski today with Seth and Sam. Arrived at Hojos around 9:45 and the skies opened up and the temps rose. We decided to ski Chute and then Lobster Claw and had awesome spring conditions. After some discussion we decided two runs was enough and had a nice ski down the Sherburne to the parking lot. Couldn't have asked for a better trip! Still a tun of snow up there although the Sherbie is getting thin and the crevasse under the lip is getting to be a problem. Might even make another trip up there this year.

Do you have april break chris? These weekends are so iffy that there are pretty slim amounts of time to get up there. Looks like you had a great day! Can't wait to get up there

looks so sick chris, i am in north conway for a few days just suffering looking at washington and all the white still up there, but not being able to go up into the bowl hahaha

Now I'm jealous. That looks like a great day. Way to get after it!
 
Just had a sweet day on the great gulf. Skied airplane which is really the only thing left on that side of the hill. Snow was great and there was good coverage except in a few spots where the sliding snow had pulled a lot off some rocks. I took my skis off and climbed down while others pointed it and went for it. It was sunny, 80, and no wind what so ever. We took the auto road up just so it would be faster. It was my first time doing it and good god that is a hard climb back up. There were a few guys who were around 40 who got almost 10 runs. I could barely do 2.

Also Chris, a guy up there named Jamie said he knew you guys from waterskiing. He was killing it, he hiked on the ridge in some Vans.

I'll post some pictures when I'm on my computer. Hillmans has a ton of snow left so I might head up next week if this bad weather clears out. I didn't get a good look of tux so someone else is gonna have to see how that is.

Wow looks like I met a celebrity in the waterskiing world haha. My dad was talking to him while I was climbing back up and he mentioned cannon and jamie made that connection. There were only four other people so it was pretty easy to talk to them haha.

I'm looking to get into mountaineering & ice climbing this year, and I think the best way to do that would be to take some intro courses. I've been looking at some companies that work out of Crawford and the Presidentials and I was wondering if any of you had any experience with any company.

Also do you think it is best to gain some basic experience through guided trips or should I get my friends to take me out?

Any tips are greatly appreciated, I'm just trying to figure out how to get some basic experience

I would go with the course first. You want to be able to make your own decisions in the backcountry rather than follow what your friends are doing. If you going to do the course for sure i would buy your beacon, probe, shovel first i didnt and wish i had. It just gives you more familiarity with your own stuff.
