That's a lot of dead people. But you see, now over here we're having 10 meter high waves (like the first Tsunami, i believe)and noone is dying (well, yeah, one fisherman). I think they should have been more prepared. All of the countries in this area should have not allowed communties to grow so close to the coast, because it's been known for quite a fucking long time that someday, it would happen. I really feel sorry for all of those persons, they are not to blame, and i know it might be hard to find actually someone to blame, but i think Governments should have known better.

the 162,000 was the actual accounted for people. but so many more people died that didn't have any records at all. they were basically street people with no records. and a lot of them were children. that is what the difference is

sinister how are you going to suggest that people should or should not be allowed to live in certain areas. you do realize that there are areas of this country that are regularly hit by hurricanes and tornadoes and yet our government does nothing to keep them from continually hurting themselves.

even if the governments knew that there was going to be a potential threat for tsunami, you can't simply run into thousands of communities and order them to move away from their methods of subsitence. thats ridiculous. especially if they aren't educated or at all familiar with tsunamis - they simply woudn't take it seriously, remember that even here in the united states were completely divided over things like global warming for example.

you just need to stop going on assumption.

I do realise they actually needed fishing, I feel as bad for them as you guys, don't believe I'm not feeling sorry.

What I actually want to say is that it's been known for centuries that Tsunamies could and would occur around this area, and, besides needing the preventive plan that could help them (which they didn't get basically for negligence), they should have been warned and at least, give them some tips. Why did noone move when the water was receeding? People were so unprepared, some tourists actually managed to escape cause a little girl knew that this recession of water would lead to the tsunami. The Governments, (althought very poor) should have spent some money (don't forget there's tons of corruption) in programs for Tsunami awareness, althought I understand it was totally unexpected.

Tsunamis happen so infrequently(when was the last one?)that any warning system will probably fall into disuse and no longer be usefull. While the tsunami is still a real issue I think that the amount of aid should put into the sudan region. Ethnic clensing is going on and more people are dying from the hands of the Janjaweed than by the tsunami. not to forget famine in the world that is also killing many more than the tsunami. we are a race of spectacle. we need monsterous waves and one single incident for us to notice that something is wrong.
