Trying to teach myself to play guitar...

Forget hal leonard, Go for any of the how to books by Ron Manus.. Waaaaay easier to learn the basics than Leonard.

And it'll teach you quick too, plus Manus' books come with a CD to hear if you're doing it right.

Work on playing these basic chords and transitioning between them at first: G, D, C, A, Am, E, Em.

Also get some scales and practice the hell out of those.

If you can afford lessons I'd recommend them. I took them for about a half year and I improved more in that half year than I have in the last year. But otherwose get some books that the local music shop recommends and learn everything they have to offer.

guitartabs.cc is my god. i learn all types of shit. learn to read tabs and then focus and it will come.

well, if u dont have a beginners book, u could go to http://www.mxtabs.com cuz they have a lot of songs and stuff that shows how to play it and if ur not good enough for those songs than im sure they have simpler stuff too

I taught myself how to play guitar too!

Its not hard, you just have to be patient.

Start with powerchords, play Blink-182, Green Day, easy stuff like that. Yes I know they suck but its good to get the basics down.

Next listen to a lot of Tenacious D and learn basic chords. Get comfortable with that.

Next, find any band you like and learn their songs off tabs, or by ear!

The Final Step, write your own music and create!

Yes deffinatly take a lesson or two before starting, don't learn just by tabs, you will screw yourself in the end.

hmm..i think one of my buddies who is sick at guitar is gonna gimme some help... thanks for all the info though, i'll be sure to check into all taht shiznat

first just pluck simple tunes such as hot cross buns or some simple blink 182, then learn power chords, then learn chords and go from there

Yeah.. do that. And then learn songs you like.. you'll be more apt to learn them than scales out of a book..

its actuially www.mxtabs.net

learn power chords/bar chords, basic scales( major, minor, blues penotonic) then learn open chords. i play bass mostly but i can play the guitar pretty well too, check my profile for a bass solo i wrote.
