Trying to gain residency.......

So I'm trying to gain residency in Utah for tuition purposes. I've lived here for more than 12 consecutive months, have a Utah drivers license and registered my car in Utah. The only problem I'm running into is that I'm pretty sure that my dad claimed me as a dependent on the last tax return (He's going to double check later tonight when he gets home). So basically, if I was in fact claimed as a dependent in another state, I will not qualify for residency until it's time to file taxes next year. So if I was in fact claimed as a dependent, would it be worth the risk of maybe "modifying" my W4 to say that I was in fact independent? The school asks for a copy of the latest tax return. Do you think they will double check it or just approve if they see me claimed as an independent?

re-read your w-4. it asks if you CAN be claimed as a dependent, not if you have been claimed or not.

i would say no, and just hope your dad/yourself doesn't get audited

i am in the same situation and am currently trying to get out of the 12 consecutive months rule since i went home for the summer. if you were claimed as a dependent by your dad outside of utah you are pretty much screwed. but if you are not claimed as a dependent, it looks like you have everything else you need

Exactly which is why I'm wondering if I could attempt to change the copy I give the school to say that I am a dependent hoping that they won't verify it

I have this same problem their giving me until friday to prove i was here from june 9 to august 2012. I went home for like a month and a half so i dont know what to give them. were you able to come up with anything to prove you were here?
