True conservatives would back Kerry

The right should recoil from Bush's war without end

September 21, 2004 – If they were true to their principles, moderate Republicans and consistent conservatives would be supporting John Kerry. Instead, their acquiescence to the reckless whims of George W. Bush marks a descent into that political abyss of opportunism where partisanship is everything and principle nothing.

How else to explain their cynical support for this shallow adventurer, a phony lightweight who has bled the Treasury dry while incompetently squandering the lives of young Americans in a needless imperial campaign? If Al Gore had been knighted president by the Supreme Court and overseen this mess instead of Dubya, the rational remnant of the Republican Party would be rightly calling for his head.

Instead, a century's worth of conservative ideals are tossed out the window for political expediency. Soaring budget deficits suddenly don't matter, and not a tear is shed for the wasted surplus accumulated during Bill Clinton's tenure. Despite two huge tax cuts for the super-rich, Bush turns out to be a big believer in that old GOP boogeyman, Big Government. An equal-opportunity spendthrift, he throws billions into the sinkhole of Iraq as easily as he doles out corporate handouts.

In the newspapers we read about American mothers and fathers working in deadly Iraq as drivers and security guards because they can't find work at home. More than a million jobs have been lost since the end of the prosperous Clinton era, while real wages are stagnant. The rich have enjoyed unprecedented tax breaks even as the middle class has eroded and millions have fallen below the poverty line.

Healthcare costs are spiraling, nothing has been done to shore up Social Security and Medicare against the impending flood of retiring baby boomers, and the number of those without medical insurance is a national embarrassment – though perhaps not to the former governor of Texas, a state that far and away leads the country in this disquieting statistic.

Bush's startling inattention to our serious problems is explained away by reference to the new burden of the war on terror. How odd, then, to note that it was Bush's preoccupation with Iraq both before and after 9/11 that has left us so vulnerable to Muslim hatred and terrorist attacks. Before Sept. 11, 2001, ignored warnings and flaccid response; afterward, a campaign of lies to justify a military occupation at the Muslim world's heart.

Instead of making the U.S. safer, the hasty and unilateral dive into the Iraq quagmire shredded the post-9/11 international unity of purpose indispensable to any serious effort to root out terrorism.

But don't take my word for it: That the occupation of Iraq is a festering disaster was finally acknowledged by some Republican senators on Sunday's talk shows in the wake of the latest depressing prognostications of U.S. intelligence agencies.

'The fact is, we're in deep trouble in Iraq,' Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) conceded. 'We made serious mistakes,' said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, blamed the glaring failures in Iraq on 'the incompetence in the administration.'

Unfortunately, the solution offered by these Republican critics was an escalation of the U.S. military effort, the root cause of the rising anti-U.S. nationalism in Iraq that is crossing ethnic, religious and regional lines. A true conservative would heed George Washington's warning to avoid such foreign entanglements. This is why in 2000, candidate Bush, pretending to be conservative, said he was against 'nation-building.' Now, led by radical ideologues way outside the conservative mainstream, he's got us trying to build two nations – and failing – with many in his administration hoping to take on a few more in a second term. Talk about flip-flopping.

On Monday, Kerry made his strongest case yet that Bush was leading us dangerously astray. 'Invading Iraq has created a crisis of historic proportions and, if we do not change course, there is the prospect of a war with no end in sight,' Kerry said, calling Iraq a 'profound diversion' from the war on terror. 'The satisfaction we take in [Saddam Hussein's] downfall does not hide this fact: We have traded a dictator for a chaos that has left America less secure.'

Kerry has now framed the debate we need to have concerning American priorities. And in their hearts, responsible Republicans and independents must now realize that Kerry is right.

A lot of that article was bullshit.

True, Bush spends waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. If that were the most prominent issue in this elction, I prob. wouldn't support him, but it is not.

Money can be recovered, but lives can't. The article said that Iraq was a 'needless campaign,' but it is not. We have taken away an evil dictator that killed 100,000's of his people, using WMD, which we hadve FOUND enough to kill 1/2 a million people. We haven't found the majority of them yet, but just because we haven't foun them yet, does that mean they never existed...no. Actually there is some speculation going on right now that some of the oil for food money went to Al Queda. But, we needed to go to Iraq to make the US, and the world a safer place.

Tax cuts weren't not just given to the flithy rich as this article implies. I remember my parents, and every other middle class tax payer receive a check of $400 in the mail from the gov't.

It's so funny that the author says that Bush is supporting 'the GOP boogeyman of Big Government,' when Democrats are trying to get socialized health care, and support welfare so much.

It's also ironic that the author says that many people have been going to 'dangerous' Iraq to work as security guards and such just because they can't get jobs here. I think he missed all of those 'Now hiring' signs on the way to his office. He also states that more than a million jobs have been lost. Did he forget something here? Maybe it was that big event a couple years ago, the one where more than 4,000 people died...oh yeah september 11th. Millions of people lost there jobs because of THAT. Not because of Bush's tax cuts and big spending.

As for Grandma, that obviously, from the author's point of view, is going to die because they can't afford medicare. Well I remember Bush giving 400 billion dollars so that they could afford it, but wait, democrats raised Hell about it, and wanted Bush to stop spending even if it was for what they wanted.

It's so sad that the author thinks that Iraq is a disaster. weve taken saddam, and his 2 sons out. We are now working with Iraqis and they are trusting us and beginning to see what our country stands for, and what we have done for them. Soon we will see how much that Iraq was a success.

As for Bush's 'flip flop' He may have been against nation building in his campaign, but he sure iisn't against protecting our country, which is what he is doing with Iraq. This attempt at pointing out such a minor 'flip flop'(if it even is one) is so insignificant to the countless flip flops made my Mr. Kerry. If you don't know what they are, I'd be glad to tell you.

As for Republicans supporting Kerry...yeah right. It will be a cold day in hell when I do, and the same goes with most republicans. Bush is more like a liberal/republican with a lot of the policies he supports. I doubt you can get hardly any rep.'s to vote for Kerry. He's farther to the left than ted Kennedy, and that's almost impossible. National security is much more of an important issue than big spending or medicare, or whatever. we need someone that can defeat terrorist organizations, like Al Queda, and that man is President Bush, not John Kerry, who has voted both ways on almost every issue, voted against almost every major weapons system that we are using right now to defeat terrorism. Please for the sake of our country, vote for President Bush this November.

I really think this election sucks. simply because both sides are so stubborn to see the other side's opinion. i try to keep an open mind but its hard when everything is black and white.

wow, gj ATL, didnt know you had that in you. The mere fact that this author is using needless diction and syntax to make himself look smart and superior disgust me. All the while, his article is dripping with sarcasm, the note of an true scholar and writer (note THAT sarcasm).

I dream of winter.

god, please smote those worthy of smoting...

Mr. Redneck, you and Quinny are great at making long-winded rambling points that aren't really points at all.

Saddam didn't have any WMD. The inspections and UN sanctions were working. Give it up. It was and is a needless war. And please drop the humanitarian argument; there are/have been plenty of horrible dictators in the world; we were never concerned about them until Saddam (not to mention that Saddam was good in the 80s when he was fighting Iran, bad when he invaded Kuwait, good when Halliburton was doing business with him, bad when Bush entered the WH). The ends DO NOT justify the means. Lives can't be recovered; that's a great reason to oppose this war.

At no other time in our history have we cut taxes and gone to war at the same time. This president has never met a spending bill or a tax cut he didn't like. This shouldn't just infuriate conservatives, it should infuriate rational human beings. It doesn't make sense.

You mention all the now hiring signs; this is the first president since HERBERT HOOVER to have a net loss of jobs; quit making excuses for that. It's not acceptable.

3,000 people died on 9/11, not 4,000.

The day after the President's acceptance speech, they white house announced the largest hike in medicare fees in history; unacceptable.

I'm glad you're so confident Iraq is a success. John McCain, Chuck Hagel, and Richard Lugar disagree with you. I think they might know more about it than you.

That is a pretty big flip-flop; to go from a true conservative standpoint of avoiding foreign entanglements to supporting a hopelessly idealistic imperialistic strategy of reshaping the foundations of the middle east. It is a 180 degree switch and the issue at the heart of it will decide this election; it is important.

true enough bush spends like a drunk. where did that article come from? sheerly from curiousity... but wont kerrys medicare reforms be a grip more expensive than bushs? its not like kerry is a real fiscal conservitive... as for iraq, its expensive, but kerrys hasnt got any genius ideas to get us out of there any time soon, so its not like that little budget item will go away the second that kerry takes office (hypotheticly) maybe its not the brightest forecast, but it looks to me like its another lose lose situation, as far as straight dollars are concerned.

Mercy's eyes are blue

kerry doesn't have any genious ideas to get out of there because there aren't any, it's a fucking mess that we're gonna deal with for a long time. i'd rather go with a fresh, respectable voice in the situation than the dumb motherfucker who got us there in the first place.

Yes SVHucker the UN Sanctions against Iraq were working. That is why Iraq only violated hmmm 1,2,3,4,5,6...seven...seven...seventeen of them! Just like the UN Sanctions in Sudan have worked. I mean since the UN imposed Santons there the death toll has only grown by about, oh a mere 30,000 on top of the other 20,000 that were already slaughtered. Yes UN Sanctions are great. Just ask the one million people that were slaughtered by Slobodan Milosevic how great UN Sanctions are. I am sure they will give you rave reviews about UN Sanctions. Hell ask the Iraqi's that had to use expired/unefficient/generic drugs because Saddam was stealing from the oil for food program and giving money to the French, Russians, and Germans how great UN Sanctions are. UN Sanctions are dandy! I just hope we get some on the 4th of July to celebrate our nation's birthday...yipee!!

And I love how this goon that wrote this article is telling us we are not Conservatives by not backing Kerry. Just like Michael Moore called us all RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) in his USA Today article a couple of weeks ago. I am sure glad there are liberal ass-hats out there that can tell me what I 'truly' believe. (rolls eyes)

i love how we say other countries arent allowed to have wmd. if somebody told me america didnt have hundreds maybe thousands of nukes and biological weapons, i would have to call bullshit. i find it pretty hypocritical for us to say that, when we are more guilty of it than they are. what makes us better than them, why is it ok for us but we say its not ok for them. who is america to say

************************************************************

everybody that will be old enough to vote needs to realize that we need to get our dictator bush out of office, he is an ignorant fuck, and cant string together a sentence to save his life. he cant se that there are ways around war, and he needs to be gone

If people dont like what ive created, fuck em, because somebody else does-TANNER

Are nuke count used to be extremely high (nearly 30,000) back in the cold war days and so was the former USSR. Both the United States and Russia have dropped the nuke count by the thousands and continue to do so on a daily basis, with the intention of eliminating them all together.

The problem many nations and the UN have with nations, such as North Korea, developing weapons now is that there is no reason to. The United States and Russia cut off production many years ago. Anyone developing, or attempting to develop, such weapons now is seen as a threat to the world.

Fuck weapons... He was killing people, bottom line. As for the (R)senators, there are always going to be a few who disagree. What about (D) sen. Zell Miller who SPOKE at the Republican National Convention against his party.

Listen, If you've got facts, speak. Dont try and sway people with a bunch of rambling. Thats just gay.

Graves, you make the US out to be a good guy as far as Nuclear weapons are concerned. Could you explain why the U.S. is one of (if not the only, I'm not sure) the very, very few countries armed with such weapons without a first strike policy?

Yes Graves, the UN sanctions were working, OBVIOUSLY. The weapons inspectors didn't find anything because there were no WMDs. Bush was convinced they were there; he rolled the dice with US lives and lost.

And you really believe it is our goal to eliminate our nuclear weapon stockpile??? Of course not; we'd love nothing more than to be the only country in the world with nuclear weapons. We'll never give up our nukes voluntarily

^ i believe that. but we don't cause a nuclear threat to anyone. we jsut fuck them up with bullets. and sexy soldiers in tight informs.
