Hmm quick thread jack, as I'm also looking for a tripod for an HV40 - would a 501 be better? Or is the 701 recommended? Any reasons why?
 
501 is probably overkill for an hv, the 701 would work better for a smaller camera.

FFFFFFUUUU I need to buy a bigger tripod now for my epic camera kit
 
maybe, I don't know if i want to have a good portable tripod for run and gun / on hill and a beefy one for other stuff or what.

but I do have a 701 and 190XDB kit, if someone offers $220 I'll probably sell. Great condition
 
501 is WAY overkill. Seriously, I use the 701 for my DVX and my 35mm adapter setup, and it does fine. Get the 701.

And yeah, legs depend on the camera. I have the 190XDB for mine. B&H had a nice kit with them and the 701, so I went with that.

I can't really speak for a tripod head since I use mine for photo not video, but I have the Manfrotto 327RC2 head on the Manfrotto 055XPROB legs and I'm extremely happy with the setup
 
The 701 head is a mini fluid head, which is exactly what it sounds like; "mini" - smaller, less supportive, but still a fluid head, so its very smooth and reliable for pans and tilts. Since the 501/503 is way overkill for almost everyone here, the 701 is the logical choice, because its still a fluid head, just a smaller, more affordable one.

What camera are you putting on it?
 
Shit, sorry for the double post, but its also a plate mount, not a shoe, meaning that the camera mounts to a plate that slides in and out of the head, as opposed to a shoe which sits in the head and lifts out. The plate is much nicer and easier, trust me.
 
I wouldn't put anything bigger than an HV or a slimmed down hdslr on a 701. It's a decent head, but it doesn't have drag control which can be a pain. For not much more you can get a 501, I wish I would have bought it over the 701. Even for a smaller camera, I think a 501 is still a better choice. Also, my 701 is already starting to loosen up at the joints.
 
Yep. I don't know how anybody is shooting a DVX + 35mm adapter on a 701. I use a 506 for my HPX and a 503 for my DSLR run-and-gun. I will say that it is bad to use a head too heavy for the job, because they are designed to carry a specific range of weight. A 701 is good for an HV30 or bare bones (camera + lens) DSLR setup, but for anything more I would definitely get a 501 at least. Mine is still running strong after years of heavy abuse.

Be weary of Manfrotto legs though. In my experience, they aren't very good. For the price, they are great, but they still break and wobble like no other. 055XB legs are great for skiing because they are light and stable enough for something so simple. Don't waste your time with Manfrotto's mini half-ball thing; its shit. Unless you're dropping enough money to get a full sized half ball configuration, get legs that have a center column instead.
 
Ya, it'd be fine for an HV40, even with a wide angle. Where you get into trouble is when you have a lot of weight hanging off the front of the camera or rear.
 
Even those Bogen 501/503 heads aren't "amazing" by any means. For an "amazing" tripod you'll be spending a bit more cash.......

The shitty under $250 tripods are only good for lockoffs.
The tripods in the 400-700 dollar range are good for pans/tilts that ARE NOT zoomed in. They still have a slight kickback at the end of a pan. I have heard that the Libec LS38 has little to no kickback though ($650ish).
The tripods around $1000 are where it starts to get good it seems.
I'm using a Libec LS22 myself and it's pretty good for only $400, but not AMAZING by any means.......
Tripods can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

 
^Oh Steve, don't be so snobby ;) I haven't had any problems with my 220 dollar one, although I'm probably upgrading soon.
 
its naht snobby. Its just that action sports filmers by and large are completely out of touch when it comes to filming.
 
Yes they are. It's pretty sad actually. The standards are so different. Example; VX1000 being used still.....
BUT blondie. up there was kidding about the snobby comment hehe.....

I'm enjoying my 701 head and XDB legs for my dslr setup. It's fine for what I need. I don't know how people put dvxs on them. When I had a hv30 with a 35mm adapter it was too big of a load. And there is a huge difference between a dvx and hv30.
 
quick question.

im a complete noob to the tripod game but i was just thinking. if its a fluid head does that mean it literally has "fluid" in the internals for pans and tilts, which would freeze up during the winter
 
/sarcasm before i get hated on.

They're great skate cameras, and they do the skate world everything for their price, however, for anything else they're far too old.
 
That's only because skateboard filmmakers are so two dimensional and out of touch with what good filmmaking is. By and large, they would rather shot the exact same angle trick after trick using shitty auxiliary lenses. Crappy filming requires a crappy camera at best.

They're shitty cameras, and always will be, even for skateboarding. Low angle follows with TEH SOOPER WIDE DEATHLENZ aren't cool, and got old. Fast.
