uhh a tripod, what would you use a monopod, and how would you use one? do you just stick it into the ground hoping it doest fall over?

monopod just helps to keep the camera steady, it doesnt force it to be steady. A monopod is however much more versatile and can be taken more places. My vote would be a monopod. but thats because i dont like carrying around bulky equipment when i dont have to.

^so the monopod just sits on the ground and you hold it steady right? so you could stick it into the snow and have it steady, or dig a hole in the dirt?

I use my monopods for street photography and my tripod for landscape and long exposure shots. A nice lightweight mono is fine since it isn't freestanding. However any tripod you get at Kmart/walmart/target will be junk and not worth touching your D70. As far as tripods go...Bogens are nice, Gitzo's are absolutely bombproof! I have a Gitzo that is a bit heavy to haul around all day, but it'll never tip over. Cheaping out on a tripod for a spendy camera is like buying top of the line skis and duct-taping your boots to the skis. You should look to spend in the 100-200 range for a decent tripod.

I would say if you can only get one, get a tripod. It is better for long exposures. A monopod is good too, but it still doesn't hold the camera perfectly steady. I think most people use monopods for action shots with short exposures.

i'm gonna buy a tripod, but i have to get som cash first

monopods are easier to move, but tripods are better overall. good for long exposure, and you can take your hands off your camera when you're waiting around

depends one what you are using it for

mono- light weght, im not a fan of then. sharp for as low as 1/15. easy to move around

tri- heavy, i like them. maxium sharpness. harder to move.

i would good for a carbon fiber tripod by manfrodo w/ a quick release ball head

tripod. can use it for a larger veriety of things. like if u need to put a flash on it, riging up a remote camera with pocket wizards(i dono if you will get in to that sort of thing.....)..... the list goes on.

if you get a higher quality mono it can also be used as a boom if you have a vid cam too

You know you have the coolest cab driver when he says, 'And we're off like a prom dress.'

depends what you are doing.... if you are just wanting to capture a day on film or something use a mono cuz you can move around a lot easier, but for a shoot, competition i would go with a tripod, they are far more stable.

get a TRIPOD cuz then u can use it as a monopod, just extend the legs and fold them closed so it acts as one leg..

its what i do and it works well..
