Trends in skiing, for once im a fan

so every year theres some new trend, and 90% of the time its just some basic trick, grab, or clothing item thats fashionable. but for once, i am actually starting to see some really progressive trends in skiing. both in what people are doing with their skiing, and with ski design. it seems its finally cool to NOT do what everyone else is doing, and to try new stuff. 1 footed and inline grinds, the butter tricks, no poles, rockered and innovative shaped skis, etc etc.

i love it, and props to everyone pushing the progression, and remember, keep it stylie!

i don't wanna be able to do it all but yeah its good to see drasticly different styles, i used to think that all skiers had to look the same when they did any particular trick.

my favorite is watching people goof off. that is when you see their real style and creativity. Like the other night my buddy did a tree plant 720. He wasnt able to do it again but when he was just goofing off it was sick. That is when progression happens.

for sure when you can see people are messing around having a ton of fun i think it looks better

I hope skiing becomes more of the way you were saying. That way everybody isn't the same old plain jane. Snowboarding has some many different styles, attitudes and all of that good stuff. I would like to see skiing become more that way.

Skiing was a lot cooler when it was underground, when there were only a few skiers in the park, and everyone was super chill with eachother. now everyone is trying to out-do everyone else and its becoming mainstream and super gay... because mainstream shit is not cool, go listen to britney spears if you think it is.

i think trend isnt the best word

but i dont really know

I dont want these trends to become fads and then just die off later

it should stick with the sport forever

all the things that have been mentioned are giving new insights to the sport through others eyes

for the first time, i tried nose butters last month, im addicted to them, im pushing myself to be leaning more into the butter, trying them off drops, throwing 3's or front flips into them

skiing shouldnt be being pushed, its nice to see people do slow tricks. ie. slow 1's with different grabs. ive been throwing all the possible grabs i can into a 1

Ive no poled so much this year, and i can ski with out them as if its natural

My one picture i have on my profile, it shows my form and looks proper, but geuss what? NO POLES

I would probally cry if these trends left

dude i am with you. i tried no poles last weekend and i have to say it was sick. we had a small jump and i probably threw every do-able grab i could think of into some sick 1's was so stoked. butters have been so much fun too, although i can't do the flips hahaha. anyways i am really liking the direction skiing is going in. this month is gonna be sick cause we got some jumps up finally i can try some nice switch spins and what not. i need to ski fucking now!

I totally agree with the whole idea of just goofing off without only throughing threes tho. Look at that video from hornebeck, all those butters he does and the pretzel butter or whatever that was, if that is wehre skiing is going count me in. The east coast is the hot spot for crazy shit. We have Andy Parry doing hippy killer variations, bind soles and anything else you can imagine, we have Will Wesson doing nollie lip 270 onto down rails, all kinds of butters comming out of this dude, including over the wall ride Pat Cowen doing coffin threes to stand up 270 out on the flat down box...thats where skiing should be going...enough of these 1440s and 1260s id rather see a nice switch 7 or 9 with a grab noone has ever seen then another switch 12 octo.

your probably the kind of person that would boo tanner hall during his final run in pipe. you've only been on this site since 2006 man, ive been here since 2003 you must be kidding me. go start snowblading i here its becoming quite popular again and we'd have one less faggot in our sport.

there are some good things going in the skiing world right now

i go about three quarters with poles and the rest without and i love it skiign is great right now.

oh em gee? ferrealz? you've been here so long, so like do you know matt harvey? ur prolly bffs.

you, have no idea what you're talking about. the growth of skiing is bringing you better parks, better product, and more progression in every sense of the word. from now on don't post while you have pms, we don't need any more hate here.

My two favorite tricks in the x games were (I think Colby West's) hand drag 180 after he fell on the previous table. And obviously lolos screamin seamen cork 3.

And jon olsson's kangaroo flip........

not

I have hellbents. I'm in with the whole "rockered skis, slow rotations, having fun" movement.

I hate trying, I love to just fuck around. That's when I have the most fun.

some trends are nice. i always have thought center mounting was bad because of how skis were shaped, but now that skis are more symmetrical and actually made for true center mounts i'm a fan of center mounting or the olsson/dumont mount. same goes with rockered skis. no poles is good for rail sessions, but otherwise you really have to be good to make yourself look remotely talented. the pros do it so it doesn't inhibit their style, and it's a style that i would say a good 90-95% of twin tip skiers don't have so save yourselves the shame. otherwise, new grinds are cool, but they all don't have to be directly taken from inline.

Judging by the fact that you just joined NS you probably haven't been around long enough to know what it used to be like in the parks, and I'm gonna have to go ahead and say you're dead wrong.

At my mountain anyways, the park is marginally better, while there are about 10 times the amount of gaper newbs (probably like you) who snake ppl when going off jumps, stand on landings and generally suck.

I'm sorry my friend, but skiing was better back in the day when ppl like you weren't around.

So true. Im not going to lie, I love trying to get a new trick in, but eventually it gets old. We only have a 10 foot table right now, and its a total pain to get 5's off of it. I was having way more fun doing nice 3's and shifty spins than trying a hucked out 5.

It seems that contests are more so dictating everyday skiing. Im all for spinning a 9 or 10, but i think a nice floaty 5 with adouble grab is cooler than a gross 'spin like a top' switch 12. Its as if kids are competing on the hill, and forgetting to have fun.

I dont know. What I do know is Im having fun doing what Im doing, and Im not going to change a single thing about it. Ive learned to block out the comments on my pants and legbag and whatnot. People are going to think what they want to about others, but as long as your happy doing what your doing, other peoples opinions shouldnt matter.

You're a skier, not a politician. Dont worry about pleasing the public, instead concern yourself with making yourself happy.

i dont think its cool, but i have too do it. haha, i always get ridiculed for not having poles, then i take off my gloves and show people i only have one thumb. haha, it sux, i could have one pole, but that would be gayer

idk i think it is good for the sport to grow and some of the little kids are ill right now i can only imagine them when their teens, besides the fact i still think all the freeskiers esp. at my mtn are still super chill and just out to have a good time, whether its w/ no poles or just hikin the smallest rail in the park and throwin down on it, its all about fun.

^ man leg bags arent bad, who gives a shit... as long as your pants arent super tight and flared out at the bottom your cool in my books. The kids that wear those pants and use no poles have the same level of respect that i have for little emo kids, none.

"I hate trying", I love that bro, sums it up so well for me. When skiing feels like work it loses alot of its luster for me.

one footed grinds are gay and no poles is jsut as fuckin gay, TJ started that cz he forgot them at a comp one time and even he thinks ppl that ski like that are retards

My pants are tight and do flare out.

If you read my post, you would have noticed I wasnt asking for anyones respect. No offence, but I dont really care what anyone thinks of me.

you're 100% right. 4 years on this website hasn't been enough time for me to figure shit out, and given that i joined newschoolers the first day i strapped skis on my feet my time here is an accurate representation of what i know about skiing. carry on with your elitist bullshit because you sir, are better than everyone else, if for no other reason than because you think so.

ok

first of all. Rollerblade grinds arent that cool. Look at where it took rollerblading... its not even in the x games anymore. not saying that its gunna happen with skiing but its just really lame to see someone claim the shit out of a one foot slide. rockered skis in the park arent a trend.. its a ski.. and if it happens to be a pair of hellbents of ep pros or a huge pow ski, by all means go and wreck your expensive bc specific ski that will probably never see fresh snow... oh and no poles people, just wanted to let you all know that homosexual week is comming up in whistler so buy your tickets. ski for yourslef, dont care what other people think.

oh my god dude.

thats the lamest thing ive ever read!

" I hate trying " what the fuckl man! this is a fucking sport that needs progression and the only thing people like you are doing it stopping it. slowing down is not gunna get you anywhere.

ya, i broke my wrist so i didnt ski with poles for a while and then when i picked them up it just felt weird.

plus with no poles its fun to dick around and no pole grabs r sick

sounds like a good idea

i'll support this group by founding it

i'll lead to group to a glorious and triumphant victory agaisnt the gangsters who are afraid of change

no no, you dont have to be gangster to ski, you just cant be a) gay b) no pole c) wear tight pants that your sister gave you d) all of the above

actually wait, i take back that statement, ive met some pretty cool homos, kids that wear tight pants and no pole are a different breed of species that no one likes or wants.
