TREND-WATCH20/21

Since when is 98mm considered skinny for park skis?

Have I just been out of the game too long?

In his interview for Salute, he mentioned he wants to transition back to skinnier skis this year and riding the ARV 86 more as of late.

What if instead of dudes hugging each other after they stomp a trick they just straight up kiss?

skiing might not be ready for that trend

I’ll probably get downvoted for this but can we just normalize running what you have till it’s in tatters, skiing has really turned into a fashion show the last few years

I agree with the sentiment but I gotta say in my experience skiing has been a fashion show for at least 15 years, since I first started lurking NS.

Those days it was Oakley Puffy 3.0 pants, Giro G10mx helmets, trading Crowbar parts, etc. And I get the sense it was just as much a fashion show in the 70s if my dad's wardrobe has any insight to offer.

Best we can do is not bite the trends so hard that we can't wear our shit when that trend dies. My black Saga fatigue jacket from 8 years ago still looks fine. My bright XL Saga from '09? That only comes out as a joke.

Knee Patches

Holy Shit!! am I a fucking Nostradamus or something. I could not have imagined how this shit has taken over. Did mogul skiers actually influence something? Probably snowboarders.

Anoraks. I've numbers of them growing in recent years (at my resort specifically), and I believe that they will one day take over. Too bad that no brand has made a good looking on since Picture had their adventure line ones.

Other trends I can see starting:

-Ruroc

-More hand-drags/ knuckle tricks (because of X games knuckle huck)

-Using COVID mask as ski mask (or vis versa)

-Gapers Backcountry skiing (duh)

-Dying in avalanches (see previous trend)

- More posers and people dressing "new wave" even if they aren't. This is because when the resorts closed people turned to things like NS for skiing related things, they then learned things like wearing goggles under helmet. Gapers will do that and think they are super cool because of it.

Yeah, I was totally right.

Gapers backcountry skiing and avalanches were probably caused by this

I know this is old. But nah.

The gear whore in me won't let me get to that point. I fucking love outerwear. And by outerwear i don't mean track pants and your moms old fleece that is 2 sizes to small. I like my outerwear stiff and loud.

Cant wait until the armada jacket I bought 10 years ago is broken in, maybe I'd actually wear it then. Fuckin hate stiff jackets especially in the park.

Hit it on the head with earth tones. Last year we saw a lot of carhartt couture work-wear clothing styles, and I see it transitioning into a military-surplus sorta look. I expect to see a lot of dark green and tan, maybe even some camo. Also, the spanking new arteryx goretex crowd of yesterseason will chill out a bit and wear stuff that's less "technical-wear performance beast".

For style, I see the "old-school surfer skrrrting their huge 80's repress transition decks through the pools" skating trend that was big their year bleeding into winter sports. Hand drags, hand plants, overstylish slow and laid-out, looking laid-back while going big.

Powder surfing blowing up and people incorporating the attitude into their gear choices and riding mentalities. Laying back into a powder ocean with soft, wide, swallow-tails. Getting a little cheesy to a reggae track. Log jams.

With a lot of comps out the door, it's such a convenient time for people to experiment with chill-asf soul trickin.

Looks left, looks right...

Last season's "I am better than you, I am a couloir freak that wears pastel performance wear" Crowd has suddenly adopted a surfer-attitude and become "slowmo style gods soul riding in our army camo drips and doing low angle log jams."

Another trend I saw this year around Park City was "vibing like we're the cast of Drake's 'War' music video":

https://youtu.be/lIlMtVGI5Pg

It's way too early to make a solid prediction for next season's trends, but ehh here's my stab at some of em:

Outerwear

- Dressed in denim and leather like a punk rock concert

- Snow camo, but instead of the traditional pattern, it'll be new inky patterns like branches or leopard

- Matching top/bottom prints

- Ironically wearing cute little pop art characters

Tricks

- Flow parks! bowls, spines, transitions, people describing themselves as a "transition skier"

- Natural Selection type powder course comps

- High amplitude zero spins

- The 70's resurfaces, incorporating body slides and rolls on the snow like lazy boys or belly slides or worm turns

- A little uptick in ski ballet maneuvers - everyone learns how to do a Wong Banger

- Doing a flip over your poles becomes a status symbol

Gear

- Ordinary people wanting to ski the extremes of ski flex

- More and more souped-up sprinter vans, everywhere you look

- People putting rave lights on their skis and snowboards for night skiing or deep pow... possibly seeing a commercially ready one come out in the second half of the season. Hell, someone might even try to make a "night skiing specific" pair.

- Ski companies start selling tailgating shit

- Those visor goggle helmets

- More growth in the binding-less market

Ah I see you’re skipping the trend middle man of snowboarding and going straight for the skate/punk trends-very innovative.

sadly I think (hOmEMadE) fleece hats are gonna stick around- which is good for all the dudes out there making them. But I saw hella white girls closing day wearing them so I think it’s time to hop off that ship while it’s still sinking.

Oh but covid definitely really pushed the DIY and street scenes, I saw a lot more people I wouldn’t have normally seen getting more into it which was rad. Hopefully people’s enthusiasm for that sticks up for the 21/22 season.

Yes in summary, I predict either:

a bunch of people dressed like punk rockers doing spinal transfers in flow parks

Or

People dressed in prints, reprising the 70s

Lmao is skiing finally gonna have its rockerboy phase?

All I've been seeing is baggy coming back but with less obnoxious colors than the 2000s

Yepppp rocker-boy phase is totally going to be the end-result of the tik-tok e-boy ski phase.

I'm preparing myself for painted nails, exposed chains, skinny T shirts with baggy pants and black everything.

Cant wait tbh

Didn't Banks Gilberti and Max Hill already do this?

Yeah of course but they were a little more true-hesh than what we're gunna be seeing. Sorta like how a bunch of these new age rappers are emulating old punk rock styles.

This is true, but I think it's worth noting that it goes both ways and a lot of musicians who aren't rappers have been copying a lot of stuff from rappers for decades now
