TREND-WATCH 21//22

Ok NS, I know it’s still the middle of summer but I feel a lot of y’all have already been chatting about this so I figured I’d get the thread rolling now. Below I’ve made a couple predictions, many are obvious but some may have you thinking “hey now… that would be pretty butter”.

**drop any predictions, opinions, wishes, recipes, hopes, dreams, haiku’s or clips that you think supports your idea of what will be trendy this year :D **

————--official forecast according to me (young_patty) below :

*things looking very skate inspired (go figure), be on the look out for everyone and their mom making VX street edits.

*we saw the rise of many homegrown edits, crews and premiers last year. With arsenic, Zoot and Jet blowing up the organic film format I’m thinking this year a lot more people will be focusing on full parts and projects rather than the clip to insta format we’ve seen dominate the past.

(If not then god have mercy on our souls)

*based on hood this year and the shit I liked skiing during the season I’m thinking we’re gonna see a lot more wallies, pole jams and tap features in edits. Maybe a stronger focus on the DIY aspect.

*PUNK ASETHIC IS BACK, HESH 4 LIFE

*dark colors and earth tones again. Big pants, patchwork, homemade everything, 90’s inspired color ways, and as usual: whatever skating/snowboarding just did a year or two ago.

*50-50 tricks are still cool, gaps to rails have been popping off as well, weirdo flips along with unusual axis’ and rotations will be big this year in and out of comps.

*More and more street skiers will turn to spots that AREN’T handrails (gaps, ledges, pads, drops etc)- we’ve seen that in years past but I think this year will be a bigger split away.

~~as usual these are just predictions made by me (young_patty) based on what I think is cool/ where I genuinely see skiing going.

if you have anything you’d like to add, argue, disprove, talk down on, pretend you already knew of/started (lol as if), highlight, gaslight or infer about please add to the thread

See you in a few months y’all!

as far as trends go, im thinking broken slides, front 2s, just jumping over the whole length of rails, and denim

Rail gaps are cool, was actually thinking about broken slides, zeech slides, royals and other grind variants making a big comeback. It fits the trendy image and OG’s love em too- everyone wins.

I’m thinking we’ll see more basic tricks but off bigger/riskier features. Which I’m all for- at least imo, some more technical tricks can look super forced. Simple tricks with more style any day

Also I noticed more people doing grabs off rails last year, I hope that becomes more of a thing

I made a thread that punk will become really popular and I agree with other people that we'll see more non-rail street spots and non-pros skiing street. What I have to add is -

More directional park and street skiing/arguably not really doing tricks

I noticed there's almost no spinning in the entire Cromat Hello Shelby video. There's a Britney and two 180s and the rest is just straight up drops, rail slides, ollies, and wall rides. Same with Syd and Roy's parts in Zootspace. I think will start to be more popular to focus 100% on style and unorthodox spots while the trick itself is a small detail or not there at all. It can be done in a way that's not just an excuse for having no tricks since its obvious these guys are very good skiers

Long poles for park and street

Poles are making a comeback for park skiing. A lot more pros are doing it already. Usually the only poles I see in the park are really short and look kinda weird but I think that'll change too. If you wanna use poles in the park you gotta fully commit to the long poles. Probably mostly a trend with the really big and fast guys

For fits I think the kind of self-aware ugly thrifted type beanies that everyone in Zootspace was wearing will be popular, as well as puffy jackets and longsleeves. I can see skinny pants coming back with certain types of skiers too. For skis Surface, Icelantic, and K2 will be more popular plus Vishnu and Jet obviously.

I made a thread on long poles at the beginning of the season cause I ski with relatively long poles for me with pow baskets. And people were like nah their just poles type stuff and look where we are now. I also see a lot more people skiing with poles that have powder baskets in the park and especially longer ones

I'm forecasting a more friendly atmosphere on the slopes. With last seasons Covid-19 precautions (hopefully) lifted I think there will be a better sense of community.

New trend: Sober Aesthetic. The system WANTS you to drink and do drugs, so everyone will just be super punk and reach enlightenment through eating vegetables and doing push-ups to really stick it to the man

Idk if people in skiing know what it is but this perfectly describes vegan straight edge

I could totally see this happening either as a direct influence of the punk trend, or just accidentally coming to the same conclusion as hardcore based on how much drugs and partying are the norm in park skiing

If it does happen that's another trend your boy was way ahead of though

I was half joking but my state just legalized weed and now I don’t wanna smoke it anymore. Fuck you Ned Lamont you can’t tell me what to do idk anything about this vegan straight edge you’re talking about but I fucking hate Arby’s

I already said it in the punk trend thread but damm can companies just make some longer skis. I’m only 5’9” and it seems like most skis could use a few more cm’s. Idk how you 6’+ mfs even fair with a pair of 180s or whatever

and this... tree jibs are much too underfilmed

sticking to the rubric I see?

No one needs to follow these trends- or any trends for that matter, but people like to talk about it regardless so I created a space for it.

But imma gaslight you now:

you act like you’re so cool for not giving a fuck about trends but secretly know that’s the trendiest thing you can do as a skier. You pretend you don’t care about any of these “trends” but you’re actually a massive hypocrite by being the trendiest mf around. So not only are you a liar and a hypocrite (we all saw that lip blind 2 clip you aren’t fooling anyone) but you’re also dogging on other kids for enjoying what looks like most of the same trends you’ve been following “for a couple years”. Meaning you actually gave the most fucks about any of these trends the whole time making you the lame one.

This is the realist shit that can be applied to some of the most active people in these threads.

I don’t think I’ve been following any “trends” for a couple years all I’m saying is I’ve seen this shit around from other people, it’s nothing new.

I don’t think tossing a wickedly disgusting lipb2 is “trendy” either haha. I tend to just do whatever the hell I want instead of following all these drones around buying jetskis and soldier pants posting shitty clips and getting their dick hard by making a shitty Instagram edit every week

Let’s see a lip b2 as nasty as his from you.

you seem all offended that someone didn’t think the same as you. You care way too much about what someone comments. If you wanna cry so much why even post.

also can you lip 2p2?

who cares if someone’s better than another person mane

I don’t care too much. I just don’t get the point of making a trend discussion thread and then someone mentioning that how some things are just overthought and stating a fact and then writing a paragraph. Idk maybe he was just joshing, regardless this thread is a 10/10 rn

lol

Owning V’s was trendy in prolly 16 or 17, they are fairly common now

also I don’t own the V’s bc everyone else’s dick is on em, I ride them because I get them at a discounted price and they’re the best ski for the style of skiing I do.

wearing Dickies or Wrangler cargos or straight pants as snow pants I feel like is something I've been seeing on the gram here and there. I feel like this one could be something because it's so accessable, it's edgy like track pants, and durable. only downside is I can see this coming and going faster than your mother last weekend
