Tremblant saga continues

http://www.tremblant.ca/media/press/negotiation/20051223_n-e.htm

things are looking worse and worse for the ski season. once december 31st comes and goes, the negotiating leverage of the employees will basically disappear. following the christmas holidays, the resort typically operates at a deficit until march break hits, thus management really have no incentive to settle until the next big wave of tourists arrives. intrawest's earnings at tremblant during the xmas season account for approximately 25% of total earnings over the year. in other words, once this week passes, the resort has lost 25% of its profits, and really has no reason to settle. my guess is that management plays a game of chicken with the employees, hoping that they will cave first and accept a deal out of desperation.

perfect example, the hockey lockout. once the season was cancelled, the players had no leverage for negotiation and ended up taking a deal over the summer that was worse than what they would have received in january.

unless this strike is settled by the 28th, expect a pretty shitty ski season at tremblant.

Tremblant gave an ultimatum to the 27th for the employees to accept what was last offered. As said above, if they say no, tremblant will probably call a lock out until school break seasons.

what's more, the whole area is suffering. tourists dont only spend their dollars at the resort, but as much at the gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants elsewhere in the region. 8000 people live in tremblant/st-jovite area, and 1600 work for the mountain. however, a huge chunk of those leftover work for establishments that are dependent on the tourist dollar that comes through. yet when the strike is settled, they certainly go back to work without any increase in their salary. in other words, everybody is getting hurt in the area by the selfish decisions of their own family and neighbours.

Tremblant runs red even during high season? I find that hard to believe. Maybe the time between christmas and february high season, but after they they proably rake it in.

oh no ! that is so bad, all the rich dude in the areas will suffer, i'm going to bang myself into a wall right now ! tremblant is in the need of money like everything in the world men, it's just a part of a big problem ...

dude, not everyone in the area is rich, people owning cotages and condos might be, but I grew up there and most people that lives there arent rich at all.

i can almost guarantee that intrawest runs a deficit on the ski side of their operations. consider the costs of running and maintaining a fully staffed mountain. grooming equipment and lifts alone must just cost a buttload. factor in staff wages, maintenance, and even the sheer amount of power needed to run all of the machinery, not to mention insurance premiums, and you have to sell a ton of ski tickets everyday to make ends meet. intrawest makes its money back in the real estate game. the true value of tremblant for them is not the mountain itself, but the land that surrounds it. the mountain is just a means of drawing people, a pretense to push condos.

that being said, im sure they are pulling in a hefty profit from the resort as a whole, but def not from the skiing itself.

now what does this mean in terms of the strike?

intrawest is probably saving more money than you think by not running its operations at full capacity, or not running them at all. therefore, joe houssain and the rest of the management can basically tell the employees to fuck off and come back when they want to work on reasonable terms. this is essentially what the nhl did with its players' union.

personally, i expect that once the deadline on the 28th passes, management is going to let the employees sweat it out, and wait for them to cave and sign an agreement which leans more towards the ownership's objectives.

management has put out an offer that is pretty damn reasonable in my opinion, and if the employees don't take it by the 28th, they are going to get hurt both in the short term ( by not working) and the long term ( by signing a shittier agreement than the one they were initially offered).

it's a question of mutual depedency: the employees need the management, the management needs the employees. one side is not being reasonable, and is subsequently fucking themselves over by acting this way.

most people that live around there are not rich by any means. they depend on tourism for their money, and if the tourists dont show up this holiday season, the whole region is getting screwed. plus, once the strike is settled, things dont just return to normal the next day. you need to reestablish a bond of trust with your customers, a process which can take years. just ask major league baseball about their attendance struggles following the 1994 strike. skiing is no different: you are providing a source of entertainment and diversion, and people will always have the power to choose to do other things with their money.

You dont know shit man, its all speculating, what a bunch of bullshit there, back up your statements with facts, it doesnt make sense what you are saying. Plus, prooving you have no idea what you are talking about, you forgot snowmaking and how tremblant's agreement with hydro Quebec is such that they cant make snow that much once february hits the wall.

fuck that, telling me i dont know shit? the snowmaking agreement is just a cooked deal between hydro quebec and intrawest, two major corporations interested in profiting each other.

intrawest is a real estate development company. you think they give a shit about skiing? def no, skiing is just a hook to bring yuppies up to buy timeshares. you think they give a shit about the environment? fuck no. they have destroyed tons of natural habitats for animals since purchasing their resorts. you would have to be insane to think whistler is as clean today as it was in 1950.

in any case im not here to shoot down the corporation, but just to say that you would have to be a naive person to ever imagine that intrawest is about anything else but real estate sales.

that being said, the employees are already getting their fair cut of the pie, and should get back to work.

fuck its so shitty. I guess this was the problem with intrawest signing workers with a union. fucking unions and fucking strikes, i just want to ski. I wish the whole world didnt have to revolve around money so much

as for backing up my statements and justifying my ideas with proper logic: two things: 1) law school 2) having lived and worked up there.

who the fuck are you man??

I am the one that showed you roun and taught you how to party up there man!

Snowmaking is a lot more than whatever you said..machinery operation whatever..

Cuz you know how to bullshit and argue doesnt mean you can back up your statements....

As far as partying, I taught you how to say no to ugly chicks even tough they have insane tits!

first of all, don't resent me cause im more intelligent than you.

secondly, you obviously have no clue who i am, cause i never say NO to ugly chicks with big tits. i mean cmon man.

I know you never say no, I tought you how, but beer makes you go over your own will, and do stuff you wouldnt do sober... Carooooooo

listen man. first of all, you cant party worth of shit, either of you. julien, you dont talk to anyone, you just stand off to the side taking pictures of me for your scrapbook. and justin, you are the closet homosexual member of a boy band.

Things you didnt get is when we were standing in a corner, its because we were talking business, and you just couldnt resist and had to go make out with some ugly drunk biatch!

buddy, getting a peck on the cheek from jd zicat on christmas eve as a sympathy move cause you are standing under the mistletoe does not qualify you as a player.

that's true. justin actually sleeps in his new dna ski suit. girls are too big an inconvenience for a ski stud like him. they hamper his game on the rails.

a hot girlfriend?

what a joke. give me 10 bottles of beer and 2 paper bags and maybe she is ok.

why two paper bags?

one for her head, and one for my head in case the one on her head falls off.

I must admit that this comment was a "funny" one, but knowing what you really think, too bad I know its far fromt he reality! ;-)

you have no right to enter this, you arent a tremblant local. no hard feeling, no personal offense, but dude, this shit is local only!
