there bith very simialer, the 4900 has a slightly better gearing system with deroe has its rear gears, but other than that it goes pretty much on looks and and if you want to spend a litle extra cash, also the one Judy fork on the 4900 is one step up than the other one, but not enough to make a real big difference.

What type of riding are you planing to do?

i am just going to be riding some mountain trails around here, nothing real steep, i may take it to moab a few times but mostly just local mountains. do those even seem like good bikes for 400 dollars for the 4900 and 300 dollars for the 4500?

your talking about american right? if you are i thjink its allright for what your doing, you can always upgrade and get bigger forks, you'll find that once you have that one you will want a bigger one, save up for a DH or freestyle bike and go rip shit up

shimano has made all these new derailers, kind of.

the more expensive one is a tad bit better. may not be worth the 100 dollars, because unless you are comparing them side by side, you most likely won't be able to tell some of the differences. but some are pretty large. do you have the money?

well do you think those bikes will be good for real mountain biking or what?

'Hey this is kinda like Speed 2, but with a bus instead of a boat.' - milhouse

nipe: Thats right Diabhal, because we're skiers

get the less expensive one...if you want to spend a more money, go for a better groupo (LX/or XT), which will cost much more than $400 (which is super cheap)...if you aren't willing to spend too much than the cheaper one is good.

seriously, don't get trek, go to mtbreview.com and research all of the brands, kona is good if you can get a 7005 double butted aluminum frame, but you should just get a frame and buy specific parts, cause the forks on those trek's are weak too

The only thing wrong with snowboarders is that they snowboard

you can't call all trek forks weak, you can't do that at all. i mean, its another brand making the forks. trek and fisher are the same brand. and the forks on these are rock shox or manitou, right?

those are both good forks

if only those 2 bikes are your options, take the cheaper, and try it. if you want to upgrade, go for it.

which do you end up buying? let us know

they re both good for real riding
