Yo, heres a quick letter I drafted up, and I know its lacking, and was wondering if you guys can help me patch it up, make it more solid.

Holla!

Hi, my name is Shawn Kisielius and I have a dream, and Im currently trying to chase it. I know what I want to do with my life, and I want to do it with all my energy. I just don't know where to start. I am a member of the green party, and believe strongly in raising

awareness for conservation and preservation.

I am currently an ecotourism student at Mount Royal College in Calgary. It's a 4 year program, but I don't want to spend 4 years, along with thousands of dollars, when I already have a goal. This is what I envision:

I want to build a tree top ecolodge retreat on the coast of BC. I have been in contact with a few organizations in the area, one being the Spirit Bear Youth coalition, who are lobbying to save that part of the rainforest, the only place in the world where the spirit bear (white

black bear) lives. It is also the last temperate rainforest in the world.

It is in danger, and I want to help save it through sustainable awareness. I have researched eco lodges, and sustainable practices. I want to raise awareness about the spirit bear and about the forest. I think saving forests is one of the greatest things someone can do. In

grade 6 I raised 250$ through raffle sales etc, to help save the amazon.

I just returned from Peru where I spent a good deal of time in the forest I helped to preserve. It only made me want to save more of it. I envision suspended platforms for guided canopy tours, and in the later stages, guided ocean kayak, and zipline tours. My motivation in this is not to make money, it is to Do No Harm, to lead by example, to enlighten and rejuvinate the soul, to explore life fully in its changing entirety, to chase dreams not fear them, to motivate, inspire, and help the human race evolve to a more aware consciousness. I have researched solar, wind, and water power, as well as low energy hot water systems (quantum heaters). I want to donate my services to small communities, using

surplus revenue from the retreat, and help with its goals and projects. I want to help restore native american culture in traditional or modern terms. I know the forestry minister of Bc announced an initiative in my

exact desired location to help conserve it, searching for ecologicalmeans of gathering revenue. That way is Ecotourism. As much as i want to just go there and start building, I understand the importance of doing it right. I need help. I need a voice. I have been spreading the word, haverecruited many supporters, i have small investors looking to invest in it. I think there is a niche here, and I want to help fulfill it. I have been building major treehouses for years on my own. My newest

one, which wasn_t torn down by the city is in montreal, and is fully suspended 35 feet from the ground by 3 chains and three trees, and its built to code. I have 2 ziplines 100 feet long, and am already stringing up cargo nets. It is unique. This is who I am, and what I want to do.I don't know if you need to hear all this, but I just don't know who I should be talking to.

I decided that people who join politics are as follows:

They want to create change, they have vision and want to save the world. So they join a party, and start going to meetings. At first, hes full of ideas, and wow, people really listen to him. So now he stands on a pedestal in a hall, on the radio, on tv, wherever he can get (afford). But oh no, whats this? No one cares about politics except the aged conservatives and slightly younger slightly less conservative liberals? uh oh. But you push on. You get elected for whatever position. Now you are the party in power. You finally get to implement the change youve been striving diligently your whole life for, but wait! whats this? D-E-M-O-C-R-A-C-Y. Hmm.. doesnt that mean the people get to decide? What about my vision? What about my world? whats with all these people I dont even know digging through my past and telling the world all my dirty little secrets? Why wont anyone vote to pass the bills I want? Why is the opposition yelling so much?

Who am I?

What is my purpose in life?

I did everything right, like they said... If I want to make change do those 500 steps..I did all of them....why cant i make change?

I guess were all fucked.

A couple of nitpicky things I would change:

Instead of BC write out British Columbia. And where you said you spent time in Peru, give an exact amount of time, not a generalization.

But it looks pretty good and look sreally cool man. Good luck with it all!

anyways, I think you should take out the last sentence 'I don't know if you need to hear all this, but I just don't know who I should be talking to.' and put a sentence saying thank you for reading.

 
If you want people to 'help you with your dream', offer them ways of doing it, contact information, a donation scale, an idea of what you need, whatever. You won't get anything out of anyone if you don't ask for anything. Make it extremely easy to understand. Try targetting who you're sending whatever this 'letter' is supposed to be (it's more of a letter than a proposal), and change the letter to suit the individual/company you're targetting. For example: You need climbing ropes for your treehouse to work. Awesome. Send a personalized letter to a climbing rope company, with the last paragraph detailing what they can do for you (send you free climbing rope), and what they get out of it(a feeling of having done the right thing, a good PR opportunity, advertising, whatever).

Right now, it's not ready to send to anyone. You're getting there though.

You seem to have a good idea of what you want to do. However, you need to do some market research for this to be successful. I would recommend starting with the basics first. I am a marketing director and have a succesfull side companu as well and these are some things you will want to find out.

- Is there a demand for this

- Whats your competition (broad and narrow scope)

- Who is your target market.

- What are the demographics of your target market

- What is your target market willing to pay for this kind of adventure

- What is your breakeven point.

I would not invest any money into this until you have a solid belief that you have the customer base you need

thats pretty cool man. i would live there and help you build it. i am almost done my degree, that is the kind of shit i could spend my time on, then at night get my masters. after a few years it would be off the ground and running i have no doubt.

it would be hard to make it afffordable though to anyone but rich euros. just take a look at usages for expensive lodeges all around. strathcona park for example where rich euros sue the lodge, the rest camp.

you might want to take out the part about not wanting to finish college. it makes sense to me, but to 'responisble' adults, it might be a sign of irresponsibility and lack of commitment.

I don't deny there are bad things in the US right now, hell, 51% of the country to be exact. But god damnit, our country being fat is NOT a problem. I do't give a shit how fat people are. hell, fat kids are harder to kidnap, that means our country is safer.

Fuck that's awesome. I read a book about building treehouses, and I'm stoked for the day when I have enough money to buy a peice of land with enough proper sized trees to build myself a tree home and live in it during the summer. Just doing that would be so tight, like a little kid's dream. It's make myself a self powered elevator and stuff. The roof would be solar, and i'd have a hammock and just chill there all summer and kayak and smoke weed. Then I'd go home to ski in the winter. That will be my life.

skipimp, i just read the letter so some of this may have been discussed. First off, very nice letter, has the potential to be moving... But right now, no one in their right minds would give you a dime.

Am I correct in saying that this is a business proposal and basically a request for funding? If you are looking to grab ahold of some money from a venture capital fund, you are going to need to take that letter and make it a hell of alot bigger than that. I cannot stress specifics enough here. You were in Peru, great, no one gives two shits unless that time in Peru was spent doing things which would help you with your tree lodge thing. So get everything that you did in Peru together, with pictures, documents showing costs and the like.

You then say that you have extensive experience building tree houses. Thats great, it will come in handy during the construction process when you are telling the contractor who that venture firm hired how you think things should look. Thats right, you will not have anything to do with the building of this lodge. If you say in your proposal that you will design and build this thing your audience (read investors) will pretty much immediately shut down. Why? You are a college student who wants to be a college dropout, who is not a structural engineer.

Is this supposed to be profitable for you? Have you ran a business before? Do you have any training in the different functions of business (systems management, marketing, accounting, finance, etc,) Are you incorporated or do you plan on risking everything you own by having a sole proprietorship. There is so much more that goes into a successfull business then i think you understand. You are passionate about this, but if you want anybody to back you, you need to show a massive portfolio of work you have done and show that you know how to make money. Investers could care less how awsome your idea is if they cant make money off of you. Many great ideas fail because of the inefficiencies of their day-to-day business practices.

 
I have written many business and marketing plans in order to gain financial backing of investors. this is a good webpage for examples on where you should be.

If you dont have at the very least a breakeven analysis and a rudimentary marketing plan on who your customers are you probably will get turned down

skipimp, what you are proposing will cost hundreds of thousands if not several million dollars. Even before you can start building, youre going to have to do an environmental impact study, so good luck getting approval to build a tree house in old growth. And good luck building a lodge 100ft off the ground by yourself

i believe this project is possible, i would go through interwest, they have lots of cash and the thing owuld be quite luxurious! they love shit like this, as does their boomer clientel.

and hexus...old growth can be logged, you don;t think it could have a treehouse development? that is a bit less of an impact eh!

also, if you do it in sctions it is quite easy to build a treehouse. i have built many, the best being a 3.5 storey house i lived in for a month. it had shingles and stairs, and ladders and decks on each level. then the .5 was attached to some other trees where i had to swing out and hammer nails in. it was 10m off the ground and amazingly fun.

Hmm, 10m? thats impressive for sure. Mine suspended one is 30 feet to the floor, so youre standing on the 4th storey.

I def dont think intrawest is the right route..i was thinking more along the lines of Govt grants from the forestries dept, talk to the minister of the environment who just announced a new initiative in exactly the areas I want, to involve more natives, and help restore their culture, help small communities with their community objectives, and all around good stuff.. not money. Shit turns sour when money is involved..

My goal is 50k, and with that I will build one home base log cabin on the ground, and one treetop lodge, with ziplines, cargo nets, and start the organic gardens.

It would be nice to start on private land so we could do what we want unbothered until we are finished.

anyways, i just want to keep spreading the good word until the right person hears me.

And if I EVER get a significant amount of cash, i know exactly where its going.
