No, logging companies pay reforestation companies to do it generally. I work for a reforestation company, but the government does pay for some, usually through the same companies. And it is generally piece work, paid per tree, so you can choose how much you make. I have been doing it for five years and you can make a lot.

You have to be ready to be outside in any weather and deal with the most bugs you've ever seen, and depending on where you are, have to be on the lookout for bears and mountain lions. You have to not mind being by yourself outside every day. It's pretty common for people to get joint injuries. You will be filthy for days on end. Any clothes you bring with you will be destroyed by the end of the season.
Also takes you to some really beautiful areas you would never otherwise see. You'll probably be in the best shape ever.
It's a really simple life, getting up before dawn, working all day, hanging out by a fire with your crew and sleeping in your tent. Usually there's a cook who feeds everyone as much as you can eat so you don't have to worry about anything beyond planting.
You might go into a town once a week or every two weeks where you will most likely be viewed as a complete outcast.

Interesting, I knew there was a bit in the states, I just always thought it was different from Canadas. Fram what I have heard it is pretty dissimilar, but I have not actually met someone who has done it down there. It is such a huge Canadian subculture though, everyone has a friend or cousin or uncle that used to do it. I have considered cruising, it sounds right up my alley. I have a few friends that do it and love it, but I was homeschooled mostt of my life and never went to college or anything, and from what I understand you need some sort ef education for it. I doubt I would take well to a classroom environment for learning any more.

For the most part, you do need a forestry or biology degree to cruise timber. That being said, relevant experience usually trumps everything else for companies like Rayonier and Weyerhaeuser. As long as you can ID conifers, navigate well with a map in the woods and do some very basic trigonometry, you can be a pretty damn good cruiser. I got a job cruising timber based on those three skills alone while I was in college for music production.

Yeah I have wondered about doing it, I am very handy with trees, always have been it was one of my main passions as a homeschooler growing up. I may do it one day, I think my friends could get me a job maybe.
