Who's planting this year? With what company and what locations?

I'm with Brinkman (4th year planter), starting early April (whenever the snow melts) in Washington State (north Columbia River valley area - south of Rossland), than in late April I'm moving up to the Ft. St. John/P.G./Williams Lake till the end of June...

...than it's off to Dryden Valley in Alberta for July...

Ive always seen threads about it, but ive never really understood what exactly it is. Is it like a canadian term for landscaping or is it some kind of government sponsered way to keep the country green? I really have no clue and have always been curious.

At Timberland in Nelson. First year tree planter, hoping it will go well. I am starting in the beginning of May.

my foreman's been planting since late february on vancouver island... he's a crazy bastard.

my gf might...i heard you folk get around camp a lot. So im conving her not to go.

what is this treeplanting business. I don't get it...

Like I understnad you plant trees, but why in the spring, and why are a bunch of people doing it?

treeplanting is what it sounds like. the loggers go and cut the trees down (clearcutting is the most popular form of logging these days, but there is still some selective cutting going on).

and we go and plant the clear cuts. why in the spring? because there's snow on the ground in the winter and as the summer gets going the days are hot and dry... it's better weather in the spring, and if you plant trees in the dry season they will die.

why do a lot of people do it? hold on one second.

i hope that link works - it's a satalite photo (thank you google earth) taken just northwest of Prince George, BC.

Those square patches you see are clear cuts. If you go to Google Earth and look at the interior of BC it all looks like that. yea, it's fucked.

(but just for the record - no I do not think I'm saving the planet by treeplanting, as far as I'm conserned I'm just working on a farm).

If you want to save the earth go shoot Bush in the head before he goes to war agains Iran.

i know that question wasn't directed towards me - but I planted in Chapleau my first year (with Wilderness). Our camp was on km 12 on the something or other lake road... like 25km south of town.

I was thinking of doing it this year...then I figured that I was to lazy to do it, so I didn't apply and now I wish I had because I need the money. It's probably to late now though

no, but my second year (thunder bay with brinkman) Street Cents from CBC came and stayed at camp with us for a few days, filmed and interviewed us.

They interviewed me and aired it... I never saw it but a guy from my work last winter did...

how long are the camps? well, my company kept each planting group at one camp for the duration of the season. The planting season lasts about 2 months plus. May/june type deal. There is usually a summer plant in july/august two for a few weeks. I am talking Ontario treeplanting here, out west it is different. The money is very good. I made around 3.5 thousand. That is after 2000 in equiptment, travel, lodging, and food costs. So i made around 5000 dollars total from 30 planting days. That was my first year. The more you've planted, the more money you make. The best on my planting crew made over 10 grand.

I'm planting with Brinkman. Starting out May 1st around North Bay, then somewhere around the 10-15th of May heading over to Hornepayne. I'm a rookie, and really looking forward to it.

Hmm, me and my buddies got switched and we're now going to Thunder Bay. Gotta be there May 10th, I'm stoked for this!
