Travis Rice Did it First

Cody Townsend's line of the year was , apparently prepped and rode first by Travis Rice. If its true, why doesn't Cody give him any cred?

Thoughts?

If there was a substantial effort that went into making it ridable, then absolutely. Theres no credit due for just riding it before cody did.

Although you never know if travis was trying to keep it a secret until his movie dropped and told cody not to mention him, in which case that guy just ruined it

i think the funniest thing is that fuck on the last comment calling out serfas for not being "on the crew"

he was only the principal photog on art of flight...

From Cody himself

"Alright, so here it goes. Travis did do it first, but until that photo of him just came out there was almost no confirmation of that for me. So here's the full backstory.

The MSP crew showed up to AK and I had the chance to high-five and chat with Travis before we headed into the mountains. Over our talks he mentioned a really amazing straightline that E-Jack did. Didn't say anything about himself, what straightline E-jack did or where it was. I brought up a straightline I had been looking at for the last two years in that zone (not the one I did) he knew which one I was talking about, we chatted about it, we high-fived and went our ways. When we flew out I then learned our guides and pilots wouldn't be the same as theirs. Which at first bummed me out from a safety standpoint because our guides were coming into the zone with as much knowledge of the year's snowpack as we were, nada. But I didn't worry cause it was my third time out there, I've flown in almost every corner of that zone and knew it really well. We would take our time as a crew, scouting snow and evaluating lines to ski. I've since learned that was a purposeful thing that Brainfarm had requested so we wouldn't "poach" their lines. Which is the first I've ever heard of that happening. But again, at the time, I was merely focused on the safety issue that new guides and new pilots brought up, not any reason to ski their lines as I've never had a problem in the past of finding lines in AK.

On day 1 we flew out and evaluated the fact that the snow fucking sucked. We found one zone with a miniscule amount of soft snow, shot for a half a day and then sat on our asses for ten days as the sun baked and no new snow came. We flew back out and found a dusting of snow out there, nothing that made anything to ski any more viable. So we scouted and scouted. Our brains started shifting from big hucks and tricks to big lines with no airs because of the hard snow. We flew into a zone I knew of that was stacked with couloirs. I spotted one and immediately thought, "Oh shit, that's maybe the one that E-jack did that Travis was talking about" as we flew further up the glacier I then found the one in the video. When I first saw it I didn't even think it would go. With time on our side, I went up to the top, scouted it from above and below and began daydreaming. We went home that day with tales of an insane couloir with a full barrel and the crew at the lodge talked about some insane lines the last crew rode. I guessed it was where we were but didn't know for sure as there were no visible tracks in both the couloirs I spotted. Since our guides and pilots were different, they couldn't confirm either. Well actually one of their pilots came out on the tail end of the trip but had actually been forced to sign a NDA with Brainfarm and didn't say a damn word with the threat of legal action. After it finally snowed enough, well I went back and rode that one in the video and Markus rode the other one. We had pretty much forgot about the possibility of the other guy's riding those lines too until we heard grumblings of it when the movie launched. But again, never heard any true confirmation till that picture came out.

So that's the story. Travis rode it first. Unbeknown to me, I rode it second. We released the footage first because they're working on a 3 year project. I didn't know for sure who or what was ridden until that photo came out. For the record, there doesn't seem to be much angst coming from their side. It's the mountains, lines don't change too much, so if two people ride it, then that's they way it's gonna be. If we starting all claiming that the second time something is ridden it's a poach, well then Jeremy Jones, Doug Coombs, Dean Cummings and a whole mess of first generation guys should be pissed"

It seems Rices crew cares more about the line being ridden and released more than Travis himself does.

Makes the line look a shitload scarier than it already was too.

Holy fuck. The video made it look at least a little fun. That's too gnar

well, there are downsides to doing a 3 year project and having people sign NDAs....the world keeps spinning meanwhile

funny thing is, if they hadn't had guides switched i feel like this might not have happened

anyway, it doesnt sound like much angst is coming from either side, just douchers on the internet

what really matters is who ripped it harder and faster. and im curious what kind of work travis did to the entrance

Wondering that too. I can assume the usual stuff like cutting away a section of the cornice, but if I were to theoretically ski that line, I wouldn't want to move too much snow with fear of totally fucking up the choke with sluff. Than again - I'm just a mere mortal compared to both those guys. Most likely wouldn't of even put that line in the "what if" category.

It doesn't matter if rice did it first, it skiing and that was snowboarding, two totally different things and that is what matters. Sure it may not be original but Cody still ripped this shit out of it regardless. And maybe if Travis put out media occasionally besides the stupid toyota commercials, maybe more people would give him credit.

Food for thought.

From the horses mouth. Much respect.

"In all actually it didn't look like it was prepped at all. But after seeing that comment I could see how it might have been prepped. There was a large cornice to my left when I entered and perhaps Travis cut out the cornice next to the rock wall to make a doable entrace. To me is just looked like a normal gap in a cornice, something that we have to find on nearly every single run we make in AK. So yeah, would never have thought it was prepped as there were no tracks or signs of digging or anything like that when I got into it.

I don't think Brainfarm is butthurt either guys, some internet dweebs are making it out to be like that but comments from Curt don't seem negative at all. Just for the record, today I was asked for the first time since this line came out if it was the first time anyone had gone down it, on air with CNN, I gave full credit to Travis. As Gaffney and I said, until we got full confirmation through that picture, we really didn't know if they had actually ridden that exact line and to talk about it so openly could make Brainfarm even more upset since they're obviously so secretive with their footage. It was a second descent, but it was still one of the coolest things I've ever ridden in my life. I have plenty of first descents, first descents that other people went and skied later and made it in the movies for other people. In no way would I ever be upset if they didn't openly give me credit. Credit is for people with ego's and beta books, skiing is for people that like to have fun."

That's fucked up! Just another example of skiers trying to steal everything from snowboarders and not give them any credit. I saw art of flight at my friends house the other night. Travis could stomp all over this skier noob.

Okay, I can't even any more. Seriously why do people get butthurt about such simple things. We just got 10-12" of freshies at my house and I'm heading for the trees in the morning. I don't have any complaints. Maybe some peoples mountains aren't open, don't have snow, or they don't actually ski/ride but JEsus, people need to chill the fuck out, get out in the snow and have a good time.

PS: I'm going to get a million first descents at the mountain tomorrow!

Last year we were making ongoing jokes at Rogers Pass about claiming first descents on everything. The more popular and travelled the line, the better it feels to claim first descent. I think this year I'm going to start claiming first descents on jump lines in the park for shits and giggles. Maybe even claim a first descent on walking down the stairs at the lodge.

"we did our research and couldn't find ANY info on it so we thought it was safe to claim a first descent on this staircase."

You need to meet Brain Farm and their EGO. #travisdidit

Points if you video it and not only are there clearly tracks but a clearly visible person up ahead. If that's not a first decent idk what is.

Nobody has hit the bunny hill yet this year. Maybe I'll go early so I can get firsties on it.

Also at Turoa over the summer, people would line up for the lift well over an hour before the lift from the base opened. The funny thing is there would be a certain amount of people and it never would really grow. On a mountain with no trees when the snow was good there weren't even enough people to scrape of a regular trail let alone the whole hill.

Also some of said people would go up and go directly into the upper lodge and get breakfast/ sit. Wait's for first chair, goes straight to the lodge and doesn't ski until things are getting skied off an hour or two later.

And people waiting for first chair in the rain or cloud cover. Lifty friends told me kids would brag "I got 10th chair!!!!!!!!!!" "Did you have a good run?" "No, BUT I GOT 10th CHAIR!!!!!!"

People are fucking special.
