Traveling with Skis

I'm planning an int'l ski trip this winter and will be in Japan for 2 weeks. I was wondering what the best way to carry all your stuff is. I mean I figure i'll have a ski bag, then a bag for boots, helmet, gloves, etc. So that's already 2 checked bags. how the heck do I take my regular clothes?

Also, does anybody have any good suggestions for ski bags/ boot bags? Is it better to get one wiht wheels?

Check at jibij my friend... they have this new armada bag with wheels and It'll carry mad amounts of skis and it has room for your boots, outerwear, everything..plus its sweetness. Then you can have a separate bag for your clothes.

just get a ski bag with extra room for your clothes and other shit, those things can be really big and actually easy to move around

oh darn... armada won't let their stuff be posted online... thats right. I can have it sent to you though. Or did u already e-mail jibij??

Don't check your boots. Carry them on with you. If the airline loses your bag, your boots are the most important thing you'll need. If you had to rent stuff, you'll be far more comfortable in your own boots than in rental boots.

In the past I've strapped my helmet to the outside of my backpack. As for clothes, I'll pack some in my ski bag and some in my second checked back. You want to put clothes in the ski bag to protect your skis. Baggage handlers aren't exactly gentle just because the bag is long and has skis in it.

Yes, wheels. You MUST have them. Don't get suckered by buying a nice or "cool" looking ski bag or duffel bag without them. It's essential to have wheels. On BOTH your duffel and your ski bag.

A large duffel and a double ski bag will suffice for your travels (I've been to Chile a ton of times and all over Europe with this set up, trust me, it works). Use a backpack as your carry on.

While I'm not familiar with the Armada stuff, Da Kine makes some pretty nice bags. That's one option.

Finally, you don't need to take as much as you think you do. The lighter the better. Wash your socks and underwear in the sink in your hotel room. Wear T-shirts more than one day. But take one pair of nice pants and one or two nice shirts for discos and nice restaurants. Pack and then re-pack, ditching everything that's not totally essential. You can usually take 2 pairs of skis on international flights w/o breaking the weight limit. But if you are flying within the European Union, they've lowered the weight limts and you have to be very, very careful to not rack up huge charges for excess weight.

Finally, bring some beanies and other small gifts from home for the locals. They'll be fully stoked and you'll be stoked to be able to give them something in return for their hospitality.

Safe travels!

Most ski shops will give away bags with new skis or sell them for 20$. Then carry a duffel bag with you clothes in it.

50 lbs domestic, 75 lbs international

weight limits before you are upcharged ^

intl flights allow you (3) checked bags

so either pack smart, or just pay the upcharge. I personally would rather pay the extra cash for an extra bag / weight then leave stuff at home I know ill need

typical upcharge is 50-75 bucks

but take warning...after 125 lbs, airlines can refuse the bag altogether

i travell with three pairs of skis all the time in one big ski bag, then one extremely large clothing bag my backpack and boots come with me on carryon, ive travelled everywhere and the only time i get caught for overweight was domestic flights but even then you can gt by that by saying your an athlete ( i am and look like one so it really helps) because they are sympathitic to things like that. Don't act like a punk and be as polite as you can and you should be sweet
