Traveling Alone?

I've been trying to organise a trip up north to Park City with a couple of friends for awhile (i live in NZ), but because of a couple of events taking up time and all the bullshit technicalities of getting a working holiday visa, I'm the only one that can actually go. I don't know whether I want to go by myself anyway or not though, because I was planning on going for like 3 months and working at PC as an instuctor hopefully, but obviously traveling that far alone scares me a fair bit. What do you guys think? Would it be worth it?

if you have a job at PC, have a place to stay, can afford a flight, and want to ski then go for it! you wont regret it at least. taking trips with your friends is dope but you can learn a lot by taking trips by yourself.

since your thinking about working that could make things easier as you should be able to meet people and it sounds like its a bit of a more long term trip i think(?) if it's just one or two weeks iand you can't find work I wouldn't.

yeah it just scares the shit out of me pretty much. i've never skied anywhere apart from new zealand, and i'm a sort of shy person so to go to a foreign country for that long on my own is a pretty huge concept. i don't know.

That's a hard situation... I don't really know why you would want to leave NZ in the middle of the season to come down to PC, in the summer... Your call. I travel alone a lot, and it's a good experience. Kinda boring, but it gives you lots of time to think, and learn about yourself. If you already have lodging, and a job lined up then go for it. There are usually lots of cool people at places like that, and if you are wiling to make friends, than you will meet a lot of people. Your call.

im not planning on going until december, haha yeah going in the summer wouldn't make much sense. i'm pretty sure i'll go now, i can't ski here this season because i messed myself up pretty good early in the season, so i'm definately not keen on waiting a full year to ski again. Cheers NSers...

yeah man do it. i travelled by myself to whistler from jindi in 06/07 and it was the best experience of my life, so much so i'm moving there to live permanatly in October. and yeah, u do learn alot about yourself traveling alone and you'll meet friends that you'll have for life along the way.

do it.

Last season, I did something similar. I moved to Switzerland for three months by myself. I didn't have a job or place to stay, I just booked a flight and went. I booked into a hostel for two weeks while I looked for a room or apartment to rent, which isn't as hard as it seems once you're a local. I saved enough money where I didn't really have to work, but I had a few offers for jobs. You'll meet people really quickly if you're outgoing and especially if you stay in a hostel for a few days/weeks before finding your own pad. I had a blast, do it!

So far I've done a season in NZ alone and two in France, i knew noone when i went over, found a place to live and stuff, got some work then met people who i lived/worked/skied with and now I have a lot more friends than I did 3years ago... It's amazing man, you just rock up and have to meet people. The first week can be a little hard as you feel like an outsider and you're kinda jetlagged or whatever but as soon as you start talking to people it's sweet, you will laugh at your friends for not going along with you.

You will have the time of your life, your skiing will improve so much and you will probably go back to NA the season after...

Honestly man, it seems hard but is is the best decision you will have made to date. You always have NS to hook up with PC locals or wherever you end up.

think about all you could potentially gain from making the trip, does it outweigh the possible negatives?id like to take a trip to somewhere outside of america for a few months to ski but i have to figure some stuff out first. best of luck to you if you do make the trip

You'll def meet people out there. I would do that in a second, go man you won't regret it

I haven't traveled out of the country alone, but I've been traveling throughout Utah and Colorado for the summer by myself. People are a lot more likely to talk to you if you're the only one; I've made tons of connections the past few months and I'm more on the shy side. It's great to have some time by yourself, but you'll meet some great people to ski with- they'll be lifelong best friends. You have money, a job, and a place to stay. I say you do it.

I traveled most of the way across Canada myself to live in a hostel in Whistler with a bunch of strangers for a month. Most of them had done the same thing, but some came all the way from Europe/Japan/Australia themselves. I had a great time. You won't be the only one in your situation. Go for it!

Dood! There shouldn't be a question about it.. if the finances are there then get after it! I currently am in NZ and I came here by my lonesome, I've met heaps of people to shred with and hangout with.... its legit man do it. It is sucha good opportunity, don't pass it up.

you guys have made me so keen to go now, but i have to decide whether i want to take up a really good job offer that will mean lots of money and clock up a lot of hours on my building apprenticeship, or go skiing..... there always has to be something hahaha. hopefully the job will wait for me if i go but its a huge decision. Cheers to everyone, as always great advice
