Im coming from denmark to LA in the start of january. What ways are there to get from LA to mammoth, preferably cheap ways?(remember im bringing skibag etc)

Yep. Cheaper then renting a car and paying for the gas in the whole trip. It's also faster. mammoth is awesome because the way it is setup, you can walk through the whole town real easily or you can ride the free shuttle. You won't even need a car when you are there. If you don't mind low end hotels then a good one would be the Quality Inn. It's cheap- $80 a night (I think) and it has two queen beds and free breakfast and a shuttle stop right across the street. It's also right next to lots of good food and Footloose is a 3 minute walk away. You can even walk or ride the bus down to the Vons and buy some cheap stuff there. Sorry if you didn't need the hotel or anything, I was on the topic so I thought I might suggest some ideas.

thank you guys!
We are coming 4 people, would it still be cheaper to buy 4 planetickets, than to share a rental car.
And is it even possible to rent a car in LA and drop it off in mammoth?
How about greyhound? or is it only driving between bigger cities?

hey when you are there if you have a place in your floor for a chilean friend for like one or 2 nights like around the 25th of january it would be sick!!

Well. You're gonna need a larger car for your skis and all your gear. How long do you plan on staying there? I have never seen a rental car place in Mammoth. I would bet there is not one because originally the airport was private. Now, I would imagine there being a rental car place. Let me go check right now. I have a feeling you are out of luck on returning the car in either Mammoth OR Bishop. I checked Hertz and Avis, two largest in the states and nothing came up. I would say, since you're going to NEED something like a ford explorer if you're going more than 5 days it's going to cost more. I know gas is cheap now, but you can expect at least 60 U.S. smackers for gas there and back. Probably two tanks (one there and one back) I would say fly and ride shuttles around town, it is WAY more fun! I just checked Greyhound and there are NO buses to any area close to Mammoth (Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, June Lake). So you're in for a rental car or plane and ride around on the bus. If you're there for over 5 days you're a LOT better off flying. If you do decide to go with the rental car that Quality Inn has super sweet parking! It's a garage under the hotel and we were 15 seconds from our car. It was Sccchhhwwwweeeettttt! Not a nice hotel, it's good if you want to sleep and eat a free breakfast. They're good with foreigners too. When me and my Dad were there almost all the hotel had French people.

Yeah. I'd say that is a VERY good choice. I've never flown internationally as you are planning to. I would imagine you have to go through some sort of customs and since L.A. is one of America's largest International airport, if you do have to go through customs the line will be really long and will add a lot of time to the trip. Maybe you only have to go through customs at the place of departure, I don't know. Then you have to get your bags, then your car, go through some traffic and try not to get lost on the way to Mammoth. It's a boring ass drive anyways. You'll have to walk a little ways to get to the Mammoth flight but it won't be long. When you get to Mammoth there will be almost no line for customs, you'll get your bags immediately and there will be a bus waiting right there for you. I'm not totally sure on the bus, but I would be willing to bet that they have a shuttle service to the airport. Your hotel may even do a shuttle service. I hope you have a GREAT time! Mammoth is like going to heaven, you can get to the top and look across all the Sierras and there's killer everything, steep and tech to one of North America's best parks. Hopefully there is a lot of snow when you are there and there is no wind. Last time I went and it was in the negatives with wind chill. I still LOVED it though! Best of luck! You will enjoy it. Any other questions?

customs at LAX really isn't too bad if you show up any other time than monday morning for friday afternoon. Security threats aren't as high anymore so it really isn't bad.
Are you living in mammoth for the winter? or just hanging out for a week or two?
My norwegian roommate last year straight up bought a car upon getting into the US and drove to mammoth with all her stuff. She was a wealthier norwegian though.... so the $30,000 didn't sting too bad.

I am also planning a trip to Mammoth. My Plain arrives at lax at 2.30 but the plain to Mammoth departs at 2.20 so i need at place to crash in la for the night. Does any of you know of a cheap hostel or something like that nereby Lax?? Its on the 24. of January.

I live 2 miles from LAX and go to mammoth every weekend. I doubt i could take all 4 of you guys, but could try, just tie the shit on the roof. Makes gas cheaper.

u may have to scratch my back this spring when im in scandinavia though

Customs at LAX can suck, the last three times I flew in from europe I was stopped and searched which means waiting around an extra half hour after you get your bags. To be fair though all my stuff probably smelled of ganja and I honestly think I might be on some sort of list because i literally always get stopped. Maybe I should get a hair cut.

If you could transfer to Mammoth direct from LAX you could skip all that but the flights to Mammoth probably leave from John Wayne or Ontario or something huh?
