Transition/effect in FCP

Okay so I feel like such a fuckin' nub asking this but the fuck is the effect called that is overly used in ski films with the orange burns?

Used in the whole beginning of this.

Yes. It's not actually called that in fcp because it doesn't exist. But you should just give up and not use it.

I have yet to try it. So this information is second hand. I was told to film a fire. Then cross dissolve that footage and into your next shot both cross dissolved to the fire shot. If that makes since.

I've heard this, more specifically I've heard you should shoot the flame of a candle, but I've never done it either.

that is actual film stock, you know film, before video and digital.

FCP might have some effect, but most of fcp effects suck so just figure out a way to film it yourself or my some stock footage from istock.com

not really worth using. its over used to be honest. used it once or twice, but its hard to get a good one

I think its pretty cool if used in moderation... just like any effect

all you have to do is find some stock footage of it, then cross fade it in and out with the opacity slightly down.

What is with the hate on film burn? I haven't used it yet but im not apposed to it. The more options you have to use while editing/filming the better you are IMO. There is a place for everything. PBP did alot of film burn in Reasons and they did a nice job with it.

Film burn effects can be awesome when used right
I have played with some cool ways of making them myself, one cool way is shoot some lights out of focus and then lay those over with a "Screen" transfer mode on it, (might want to try messing with some other modes) but there are a lot of ways to make these kind of transitions and not go with just a straight film burn.
Here is a video that I shot lights out of focus and used them as a film burn:

Swear to God, I watched the last scene in it with the dude in blue who transferred to the opposite rail on the stair set sooo many times, so fucking sick hahaha

did you film that with your 7d? loved the colors? how much post correction if any? i do like the unfocused lights transition. looks solid!
