Transfering video

Im new at the whole filming thing and wondering What's the best way to transfer video from a camera to a computer and preserve the quality, i have very little idea what im talking about but ive noticed some vids on here have excellent quality while others suck so any help would be cool

firewire... edit and transfer back to camera

firewire = twice the quality or dazzle
