Train hopping...

all right, long story short, I couldn't get a ride from my house in truckee to school in reno today, to I hopped a freight train and rode it to reno. it had to be one of the funnest, most relaxing experiences of my life. seriously, I could give up skiing to just rides trains and see the country. this is definetly one of those things you need to do before you die.

ive done some research on it. you got hobo gangs travelling on the trains that will murder you. freight trains travel a lot faster then they use to. my dad has a friend that was killed by doing that.

frieght trains run through my town and beside my university. ive always played with the idea of taking the train into town but its not worth the risk.

you may be consistent with 3's but there is always that one time where shit can go wrong. and thats what i always think about when the idea of hopping trains gets in my head.

but if you start from a stand still then yea i suppose thats alright, just don't travel in the boxcars because you can't open the door from the inside, just wedge a rail road spike in the door and don't travel in the container cars because they might shift and squash you.

also when a train slows down it will compress and when it speeds up there is a lot of slack so it might jerk you around, maybe throw you off.

ive always wanted to try train hopping...it seems like one of the last really adventurous random things you can do in america, definitely sounds like a good time if done right

i hear train hoppings big around tahoe.

i also heard of a guy who went for a boxcar and upon jumping up through the door... found out that it was a floorless car of some sort and subsequently got at least one leg chopped off. im hazy on the details. in any case it didnt sound enticing.

the train was stopped practically in the middle of down town, I hopped on a grain car near the end and sat and just kinda enjoyed the ride. next time I'm gonna go for a different kind of car though, cause the grain one was a little werid.

well yesterday i was going into town to have a bbq at my friends place and watch the football game, so a train made its way past the university and it slowed down just enough because it needs to take a corner that i was able to hop on. it was cool i guess, especially going across the river bridge. i had to bail off soon after that because if you don't the front of the train is already on a straight portion of the track and it begins to pick up speed very fast. the car that i hopped on was one of those cars that carry lumber wood so i could hold on to a bar on the train then with my right hand, hold on to the cable that was keep the lumber on the car.

where can I find one of these maps?

I really wanna do this-- Ive always wanted to, but where could I find one of these maps that isnt for amtrak type trains?

they usually use the same rail line, well at least thats the case in canada.

freight trains have priority over passenger trains believe it or not.

but usually rail lines are titled CP canadian pacific CN canadian national, so thats how you know if they are freight rails because they are owned by CP or CN.

and its good to know where you are going before you get on a freight train, that way you can plan ahead and look at the railway line on the map and figure out where a corner is or a town because trains usually slow down to take a corner or when entering towns. thats how i got on the train in my town, it needs to go over a bridge then take a corner which then the train enters the town, so where my uni is it slows down just enough towards the back of the train that i can hop on.

but personally i think jumping on the very last car of the train is probably the safest. because if you fuck up you only have to worry about that one car, since there are no more behind it.

BUMPwas gonna make a thread but I figured I'd just bump this one:
how hard is it to hop with skis on your person? Like X style on your pack?

the train depot near me is where all the homeless people "live" and it is the creepiest fucking place, just full of abandoned buildings, rusty trains, and searchlights

i dont think my urge to train hop is enough to merit going there

there was a member here a while ago he posted an epic journal of him and his buddy goin cross country on trains
he said it was fucked mad hobos you gotta watch ur back all the time and shit like that
it would be quite the experience though

Haha I have hoped that same train, just from teh beginning of truckee to the end.

i was taking my avi 1 class at ASI and had to walk through truckee to get a bus back to incline. As we were just at the start of truckee the train goes by and my friend runs towards the train. I'm like wtf and run after him and hop on. Pretty funny because we were carrying backpacks with our skis and everything.

google maps has all the train tracks marked i'm pretty sure, or you can do satellite view and see all that shit. map out your whole trip.

if it's a local train you can probably figure out where it slows down pretty easily for hopping on and getting off.

theres an area around the train when it's moving fast that will suck you inwards and could be potentially hazardous. my buddy almost got sucked into a train when he was tripping once luckily i grabbed him and pulled him back.
