Hey kids, don't buy one. If it is prior to 96 you will be fucked. FUCKED. I bought a 95 in January and the head gasket just blew. Apparently, after doing some searching on google this is a huge problem and a recall was made by Toyota. I gave my VIN # to the dealership and of course mine is in the short window of time where it's not covered by the recall. I am shit out luck and this is going to cost me probably $2,000 to fix. (which I don't have) Fuck. It's obvious that before 96 the head/ gasket were not built right. Don't believe me ? Look here http://www.carsurvey.org/viewcomments_review_45660.html

I wish I would have known this before buying the car so just thought I'd let you guys know. If your truck is a '95 or prior production and hasn't had the recall just give it time. The gasket will blow and you will be bent over the service counter at your Toyota Dealer just like me and everyone on that website^.

2000 bucks for a head gasket? you really are getting bent over. do it yourself. not that hard at all. and is that a reason not to buy one. NO.

I like pie.

I will probably end up trying it myself. I don't have the money. I know some stuff about cars but I don't know how to take an engine apart. Have you changed one can you help me out or do you know of a website telling you how to fix it. I will probably need to do a valve job on it too I hear the 3.0L is notorious for running on 5 cylinders right as soon as the head gasket job is done and is prone to burn a valve after around a 100,000 miles.

funny i had a 90 4runner it went strong for 10 years i now have a 95 and it going strong. hmmm i'll check my din. but before anyone judges 4runners know that thay are amazingly capable offroad vehicles and amazingly reliably (as is my opinion which i would say is as valid as anyones after owning 2)

^I agree the car is awesome offroad. Check out your head gasket though if you start burning up anitfreeze like crazy though you're in trouble.

my truck is the shit. i know nobody cares, but i am excited because i just got it. it's a 1990 f-250 extra cab, 4x4, 7.3L diesel, 5 speed tranny, 6 inch lift, 36" hummer H1 military tires. damn it's cool. oh, and it's brown haha.

^post a pic. it sounds badass

i'll post new ones when i get my camera back from some broad like in a week. i'll make a whole thread about it i'm so damn excited.

Not to hard to do, I don't know about a toyota though, But when your done putting the Cylinder Head back on it has to be screwed in at a specific torque, If its too tight It will end up leaking.

i roll a 4runner and couldnt be happier. the only problems i have are minor and cosmetic, like glue failing on weather strips and dumb shit like that.

All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz and I'm fine.

what?

I am sorry about your bad experience, but toyota makes some of the most long lasting reliable cars.

Seriously, toyotas go forever and can take one hell of a beating.

I've had 2 4runners, and a toyota pickup and those were the best cars I have ever driven. (by the way, the reason why I don't have them is not because they died on me but because at different times my brothers have totalled all 3). If they hadn't hit a telephone pole, they would still be going.

My immediate family has also had 2 4runners and all my cousins/aunts/uncles have them. I love them. Great cars.

yeah...while I prefer to Rep the Nissan Pathfinders (on #3 for various reasons) I know the reputation of the 4runners and have look into many of them. They are extremely tough and reliable vehicles. Every model has their weak points and sorry you ran into yours. But you cant put down an enitire line of great vehicles because you had a bad experience.

And yes for $2000 you are really getting bent over that counter. Head gaskets arent that bad to do

I had a 96 Tacoma, and now have an 01. The only reason I have a new one is that I got in a huge accident with it. I have a friend with a 95 Tacoma with over 200,000 and he still beats the thing to shit. Toyota is the shit and I'll never drive any other kind of truck!

The 3.0 or 3.slow as it has been named did have a head gasket recall. Overall the 3 liter V6 is a poor motor, aside from the head gasket issues it only makes slightly more power than the 22re and the 22re is nearly bulletproof.

I believe that if you are going to be buying a 95 or older 4runner it needs to be both a 4 cylinder and a 5 speed. I currently drive an 85 4runner with the 22re and it is damn solid. I have also had 2 pickups, which are the exact same vehicles aside from the body difference. One was an 83 with a 22r and the other was a 91 with the 22re, I have NEVER been disappointed with any of those trucks. Also if you are looking into a toyota 4wd and you are really serious about off roading then look for one with a solid front axle, toyota changed to independent front suspension in 1986 and while the ifs trucks are still very dependable trucks they just aren't the same.

hmm... my 4runner is a 97 V6 and we have never had a single problem with except for the time i ruined the suspension, but it is a stick...maybe we just got lucky?

yeah my uncle lives right at teh top of vancover island in a logging town 2 hours in from port hardy and he had some toyota pickup that lasted for about 7 years before it was sold. the f-250s that the logging company owned only lasted about 3 years so thats pretty good.
