Touring + jibbing

Hey guys, looking for some insight !

I picked up rossignol S3 (186cm) for this season (for a sick deal) and I am looking to set it up as my first touring ski + JIBBING SKI.

Its a lot to ask for from a binding or setup but its what I want to be doing.

Right now I am leaning towards potentially finding a MFD plate and choosing a binding of my choice. The concern with that is the plate affecting the ski. I know there are a lot of info about them on the web but considering my boot is 338mm in length I would need a large plate which could affect the ski. The reason I am considering this option is because of the low stack height.

If not for the MFD the other options I am considering are the look xm 13 binding or the marker baron. ( Or any other suggestions you would have). I am wearing a BD factor boot and they have the rockered toe therefor will not really be compatible with The guardians or trackers.

Living on the east coast I am not in need of a super burly binding.

Other things to consider are that I will be throwing down flips and spins.

Thanks in advance for your advice, and sarcasm.

Well your boots will certainly limit your choice. Rocketed tourin soles won't fit many alpine bindings. There are only the warden and The Lord so te mfd plate route probably is not an option.

As for frame style bindings again there at not really many which will accept that boot. The baron and duke will but it's not ideal. The gaurdian and tracker won't and neithe will the look (rebranded gaurdian) or the ambition. The f12 coul work or fritchi but you won't be jibbing on them.

So if you want to keep your current boots you don't have too many options.

I was just taking a look at your boots as I was not familiar with them, are you sure they have a rockered sole? All the pics I could find showed alpine soles.

Factors' soles are swappable Tom. The touring sole isn't as rockered as some out there but I think it'll be a little tight for Guardians, definitely worth finding out though (search TGR).

Anyway just go for whatever Guardian variant or Duke/Baron fits your needs and you can get a deal on. They all work fine and you could use the Factors with the alpine soles in a Guardian for sure.

I figured that was the case. Yeah op jus use the alpine soles and choose the best deal on a gaurdian, baron, ambition.

You are asking a lot out of your equipment. There is not a set up out there that will truly work great for what you are looking for. What are you wanting out of your ski and binding? Are you looking for a jib set up that you can take into the BC or a BC set up that you can jib on every once and a while. What are your priorities?

Isn't the Look XM13 the same as the Guardian/Tracker?

Last season I started to explore the "backcountry" ( i use this term loosely since i live in northern ontario.) I ended up boot packing 8 total days to try and find stuff to ride( pitches, drops, ect...) My last 4 days I started building booters and bringing my park skills into a different environment.

My goal for getting something that would permit me to tour would be to facilitate an easier approach into the areas + increase my range of accessibility. Ideal a sled would be best but as a student that is out of my price range.

Can you still buy MFD plates? Is there another product thats similar to them?
yeah you can find them online still for sale. The thing is, the company is closed therefor, the warranty is no longer valid, nor you can pick up spare screws + parts.

I did find a plate for sale for 150$

Good choice the gaurdian is a great freeride binding. Remember though wtr soles are only from salomon/atomic so you will need to use te alpine soles with your current boots.

Thats what i have read about the guardian, i know the look is essentially the exact same buiding, but it says its compatible with both alpine and wtr soles. All things considered I already have an alpine sole on my boot

The look is a rebranded gaurdian. it is compatible with alpine and wtr soles but you don't have wtr soles so you need to use the alpine soles.

But they are awsome bindings and the alpine sole are probably a better option anyway.

Hey op I kinda in the same boat as you. This season I'm planning to buy some used cross-country gear so I can go out scout, build jumps, break trail then boot pack in when its not to far or then pull gear in for overnight trips. Personally I like cross-country skis for traveling long distances better.

Hey man I just saw your thread on tgr. I can't believe how bad and unhelpful everyone was there. You hear that tgr is the place for real tech talk but judging by that ns is actually a better option.

FYI- the 14-15 Atomic Tracker/Salomon Guardian binding has been updated to work with alpine norm, WTR, and touring norm boots. It is "Multi Norm Certified" just like the Warden binding is.

Yeah they definitely weren't. Being a long time reader on tgr I knew I was I was going to get lots of sarcasm and flack. I guess newschoolers will be my forum home now. Thanks for your help guys !

The reason why I decided to go with the look xm13 is because its 30$ cheaper than the baron, guardian, and tracker.

I have only done cross country skiing at xc clubs, therefor the tracks were already made. I am just assuming here, but would it not be hard to break threw the snow with xc skis ?

Considering I can get the look xm cheaper, and since they are basically the same binding, do you agree that I was better off getting the look binding ?

Breaking through snow on a xc setup will be easier because xc gear is alot lighter therefore you won't sink as much, meaning you move faster.

But keep in mind that your not on a tele setup. If you have to actually ski over serious terrain that requires technique to go back your gonna need AT gear. I would maybe ski really mellow downhill trails on xc skis. Not much more.

Food for thought the cost of AT bindings, skis, boots, and skins you could buy two brand new bc xc setups. Seeing how I'm poor as fuck I will be getting used xc gear and some old skins for long distance travel this season.
