Torrent laws in college?

i've heard that a decent amount of colleges and universities are starting to crack down on torrent users. and by cracking down, i mean confiscating laptops, erasing hard drives, and arresting/expelling students. so i've got a couple questions here:
1. anyone have proof this is going on (links, first-hand accounts, etc)2. how much torrented shit do you have to have before they come after you?3. if you're not leeching or seeding on the campus server can they still find it?

i know i'm going to get flamed for admitting that i own final cut pro and photoshop because of torrents, but keep in mind that i'm a broke college kid. and i dont think apple is exactly hurting for money right now

A few things...

One, use a privacy app...There are a few out there, PeerGuardian, etc.

Two, a lot of universities have usage caps, but I haven't heard of them caring what you do with that bandwidth, I guess it's probably different between schools so you should find out for your school.

Three, students get really good deals on software. If you're using any of that software for any commercial purpose, man up and buy it.

ya my college, CU sent out emails that warned us that we would get busted if we did it so i was a little sketched but ended up doing it anyways quite a bit. You can get a program, pear guardian i think, that gives a false ip so it makes you a lot harder to trace. I mean they dont really track individual bandwith from your room.

my brother has some friends who got owned by record companies and fined 10s of thousands of dollars, the kids had to hire a lawyer, it was a huge shit show...
