Toronto School Board Supports Racial Segregation

So basically here's the deal, a bunch of people from Toronto's Black community tabled a proposal to create a school that is centred around teaching black history and culture. This is thought as a new way to try and keep black students in school and prevent them from dropping out before finishing high school. I believe the statistic is 40% of black students don't finsh high school in Toronto.

Now here's my take on the issue:

This is blatently racial segregation. The only reason there hasn't been a major uproar in the city is that the idea was put forward by the black community and was voted "yes" by people that were in favour of controversial legislation to provide provincial funding to faith based schools. Basically I think Toronto will see a spike in gang and racially charged violence.

Thoughts?

as long as they let the canadians smoke their Mary J, they can do anything with the blacks they want.

If that happened in America I would be pissed after they bitched about schoolers being segregated so much even if it was fucked up

dont try and tell me that canadians didnt use slaves make poutine for weary travelers, or wield hockey pucks for an ever growing sport that would soon become the national pastime of our hat.

canadians, i know your secrets.

they've clearly never heard of the slave-based seal clubbing in the early 1800's. Silly kids and their lack of historical intelligence.

It's an experimental school, they are able to can it if they find that it's not producing any substantial results. I sort of agree with it because if the current system isn't working there's no harm in trying another. Some would see it as racial segregation but if a good part of the black and also the white community supported it that sort of puts it into a grey area.

face it, Canada has gone from the left liberal in the 1990's to right wing conservative. Politicians complain constantly how everyone should be treated equally, but then let this go? So without proof that this will work, then shove a racist based school. And they try to blame it on "black drop outs". What they should to is make school fun. All you do in school is slave on school books. Why they should do is increase phys ed and change up the activities. Make kids wanna go to school. So segregation school should be illegal.

they also dont realize that if it wasnt for their enslaved cousins in america that were involved in the jazz movement, that they wouldnt have gotten all those seeds to start becoming the most stoned hat in the world.

thats right, i called canada a hat, twice.

why, because a minority conservative government has a little bit more seats in the house of commons than the rest of the parties?

i don't think there was a shift in peoples political ideologies, but because many people just just fed up with the liberals.

i don't know how you came to that conclusion that canada has become a conservative country, but whatever you say.

So they get all pissed at the white man for segregation, then we give them what they want, and they go and ask us for a segregated, all black school?

I think they're starting to miss it....

There are black people in canada?!?!?!

I think there are already all black colleges in the u.s. will this be a public high school?

I am not talking about politics, Im talking about social psychology. People are looking for more right wing policies. Not just in Canada, but also in the states. I dont know why it changed it could be music, MTV or 9/11, all I know is that north america ideologies have shifted since the 90's

I want to clear one thing up that some people here are talking about, and that is the government has no involvement in this issue what so ever. In fact, the Ontario government is against this idea all together and will not support it in anyway.

Now that I have cleared that up, I am highly against the idea of a "afrocentric school". I don't think this is the right way on going about, getting black kids more intersted in school. The fact is that kids don't go to school cause they don't enjoy learning, or aren't motivated enough to see the values of education. I don't want to be racial or steroptypical here, but the tendcy of black kids (the one's who don't value school) are to get involved in gangs and drugs. WIth them being able to "make money" or "steal", whats the point for them to go to school, they think they are set (please don't take this the wrong way, i know their are a lot of succesful people out there, it's what I have experienced and have seen).

Back to the "afrocentric" idea, they are trying to play it off as not being racial segregation because it will be open to anyone. But lets face it, no white, brown, purple, blue, yellow kid would want to go to a school like this. Only Blacks will want to go because of the "black history" they will teach. What I don't understand is what is exactly a "afrocentric curicullum". Sure they will teach black history and issues, but what else will be different from a normal school, math? geography? health? science? English? Last time I checked, those are universal subjects. In English are they going to teach how to talk like snoop dog?

Lastly, what about the other ethnic groups like the chinesse, East Indians, spanish ext. Why, can't they have thier own school to teach their kids about their history? I think what should be done is to possibly introduce maybe a black history course into the curiculum that students can take.

To end off my long rant haha, I think this biggest reason that this has become a large issue is the fact it is a publicly funded school, because there are such things as private schools that teach different curiculums such as afrocentric. So I do not support this new proposal and it is clear that the public doesn't and even not all of the TDSB supports the idea. We will ahve to wait and see what happends before sept. '09 when they plan to open this school.

in a way, it could also isolate gang violance and drugs. yeah i know that's kinda racist but its true

I think you should calm down... we're looking at a way to increase the amount of people graduating from high school, not segregate (this may be a by product, but don't we see black kids hang out with other black kids anyway??).

The issue is that black people cannot relate with what is taught in school, which is why they tend to drop out.. if they are taught about something relevant to their interests they would have a greater chance at getting educated and staying in school

Not really,

Education is not a federal matter, its provincial. Yes our PM is Conservative but our Provincial Premier (Dalton McGinty) is a liberal.... and a slimeball.

Additionally, this decision was made at a Municipal level, most of who are non partisan.

shut up dude, this is the first time this has happened here. Oh, except for the indians. They are still more or less segregated although not forcibly so. And I dont' live or will never live anywhere near toronto so I don't care. Ontario sucks.

When will people get over the idea, that black people are no different then white people. They are the same thing, with different skin color.

Race should not be taken into account any more than eye color.

This is like saying that all people with blue eyes are doing worse in school on average. So we are going to make a new school for only blue eyed people and teach blue eye history.

I think a lot of people are forgetting the fact that this is NOT an all black school, ANYONE can attend it, it just focuses largely of African American culture...the only thing i see as something that might happen because of this is that then Asians might want their own school teaching Asian culture, history and ways...and so on with different cultures.

unfortunately mcguinty will fund the toronto district school board who will in turn fun these types of schools. of course more money will be needed from the government now to help cover the additional money being spent on the "afrocentric" school.

so while the ontario government says they will not support this school, they technically will be at the expense of everyone in ontario

I agree with you on the fact that the community shouldn't have to pay for it. But the problem is that there are a lot of poor whites in those areas too. Race is a generalization that should not be used to describe anything but skin color.

And I understand that these kids have shitty neighborhoods. So I support education. I'm willing to put money into schools to help get these kids outa the hood so they can help society, rather than commit crimes and hurt it.

And there are a good amount of people that did grow up in a tough neighborhood and did work hard in shcool and get a great job or at least a good job where they can live somewhere safe.

I didnt read every post but blame Africa. The rich blacks started selling the poor blacks to Europeans then they started stealing them.

I think it just furthers how politicians and most citizens believe everyone should be treated equally, but then they go and do this. You can compare it to gays thinking they should put tapes on their mouth so they get treated equally, but really it just singles them out and makes them more susceptible to discrimination. I think this is a major step backwards, but if it works then i guess it can't be that bad.

Man its such a stupid idea, just taking a step backwards in time, people like Martin Luther King jr fought to get schools with whites and blacks. then our government takes it away.
