Torn meniscus

so i was skiing back in late june to early july and i was feeling some pain in my knee, i thought about it and hoped for the best and just ruled out any serious damage because the pain wasnt so bad and i was still skiing pretty hard with little to no pain. so fast forward, i go to the doctor about 2 weeks ago and my doctor has me schedule an mri, i get the mri and make a follow up appointment at the doctor and he tells me my meniscus is torn, but he thinks it might be able to heal on its self so he gives me a cortozone (sp?) shot and sends me out, im supposed to go back in the 15th to get a follow up and see if i need surgery and im wondering, who has torn their meniscus? did yours heal without surgery? how long is recovery if you get surgery, how long without surgery?

At the moment I struggle with a big knee injury, ACL, sever cartilage damage and a tore in my meniscus. I had 4 surgeries now in the last 3 months. The first one was regarding my meniskus and the docs cutted a liitle bit away from it. Dont worry dude, if the only thing you have to deal witch is your meniscus you will be fit ar least in a month if you have surgery. It doesnt hurt at all and you are able to walk alone within a few days.

I tore my meniscus playing soccer senior year of high school. I needed surgery, and they removed 1/3 of my left meniscus. My full recovery time was about 3 weeks, and I was walking on it within a day or two. I don't know exact lengths for the healing process, but I know that the meniscus heals really slowly because it doesn't get a lot of a blood supply from the body. My doctor told me they could also go in and stitch up and repair the meniscus, and recovery time for that surgery is like 9-12 months. Good luck with your knee man, and don't worry. you could have had a much worse injury.

torn mine this year skiing and did nothing about it until end of spring. went to doctors to get mri and they said i had a little tear and wait a few weeks to see if it heals. it didnt heal so i scheduled a surgery and just got it done about a month ago. it sucked cause it was right in the middle of summer and i couldnt swim until incision fully healed. it still hurts now but its getting better, cant run yet but can walk without a limp

i too am 90 percent sure i tore my meniscus during a fall i had at hood. my coach even called ski patrol cause apparently my fall was that bad but i got up and kept skiing. but now its really bothing me. guess i should go and get it checked out

I tore mine this past december and had surgery mid-january. I couldn't walk to school for almost a month following the surgery and didn't ski groomers until 6 weeks later. By May I was skiing at about 75-80% minus being able to do moguls or cliffs, and I couldn't ski more than two days at a time. Right now it's feeling about 95%, but I still can't DH bike really hard for more than a day or two or it will swell up for a few days afterward. Oh yeah, I also had to do 14 weeks of PT just to learn how to walk and run normally again, so that kind of sucked. From what other people have told me, my experience has been a little harder than most, so don't expect to be out like I was (and still kind of am). Good luck!

I tore mine this past season too. I had to get it checked 2 times before i MADE them give me an MRI. Shit was gay, I ended up getting surgery (Partial Meniscotomy) and it was dope. I was skiing full force exactly 2 weeks later

I'd get surgery

i tore mine playing rugby but didnt realise it then, so it got a little better after a few days, then i hurt it again, same kind of pain but slightly increased but i was fine after a few days. then AGAIN ruining my ski trip to silverstar, swollen and everything. But even that went down until I got tackled sideways in a ruck at the knee, so my meniscus is pretty much fucked. Its hurts more and more everytime I hurt it, so I need to get the surgery sometime soon.

Holy shit, we share the same story except for the fact that my doctor didn't give me cortozone (whatever you said) I have the meniscus torn in both knees from skiing and it causes pain which is bareble but still a pain in the ass. All my doctor said was not to do squats, get on my knees (haha funny) and run up stairs.. I got the whole talk about surgery but never happend.

A meniscus is also a formation that occurs when you put water into something like a test tube.

i tore mine two januarys ago and finished the rest of the season before getting it fixed. and the faster you get of your ass after surgery and move around the faster it becomes better

ya, mine is feeling really good. im in colorado right now down in palmer lake, right next to colorado springs and today i went on a hike up mt herman, its about 9,500 ft elevation and i was feeling good, no pain at all. i felt it a little on my way down but i brought hiking poles so i could relieve some of the downhill pressure. im hoping its going to heal up pretty quick because im going camping and then moving to mammoth. well my doctor appointment is the 15th and im going on my camping trip the 16th, then i move to mammoth after, hopefully every thing ends up well.

+ karma for everyone who posted with helpful info, sorry but i already knew that a meniscus was also a bubble on water so maybe ill give you a little for trying, and maybe u helped someone else.

but keep the info coming its much appreciated.

peace, enjoy yourselves

I completely tore my acl, tore my mcl, and my meniscus. Unfortuately I tore my meniscus in a place in my knee where it won't heal on its own. So they just cleaned it out when I had surgery. If your doctor told you you tore it in a place where it might grow back thats really good news, but if it isn't in a place where it won't grow back, then you should have surgery to get in cleaned out.

Did any of you guys have trouble straightening and bending your leg when you tore the meniscus? I've done a good job of messing up my acl and both the medial and lateral meniscus, but apparently can't get the surgery till my knee starts to bend more and can fully straighten. It's pretty fucking gay and hurts like hell!

i fucked my knee up in january, but got it looked at in july, i have a torn meniscus and decided to postpone the surgery to see if it affects my ski season, the doctor told me i would have the same chance of it tearing more weather i got the surgery or not, so i decided to pass and see how it feels.

I tore my miniscus and my ACL in July at Hood but I'm not gonna get surgery I'm just gonna ski with a brace, it should be OK, hopefullly.

damnnnnn son I had microfracture to try and spur cartilage growth, it works it just takes a longgggg time to fully heal. what did they do for the cartilage damage you had?

You'll never know until you get an MRI which is lots of bank. The last thing you want is for them to have to take it out though because that shit never grows back and depending on how much they take it usually leads to arthritis and a knee replacement. Not to be a buzz kill, most of the time its no big deal and it takes a month or so to heal. I wish you a speedy recovery and some soft pow landings in the future!

I had knee surgery on mine 2 years ago... Athroscopy I think it was... It was for an injury I had got from dislocating my knee... Anyhow, they removed scar tissue and a fractured bone from my meniscus which occured durin dislocation. I assume that's the same surgery they would for you... I was back up and walking/jogging within 2 weeks and I was playing varsity football within 6 weeks (against physios reccomendation).

Good luck with your recovery bro!

+++vibes

just make sure you let it heal to 100% or else you could f your knee up for life. you do that and you can kiss skiing goodbye or a lot of pain the rest of your life

hahaha i tore mine like 8 months ago, and its swollen, and is in pain, but my mom said it was pointless to get surgery now, cause im 16, and that i should wait till im older...dumb bitch...

I tore mine when I was a senior in high school. It was only a small tear but the flap of cartilage kept catching on my knee cap and that is what would cause the pain. The doctor explained to me that because of the location of the miniscus there is not a whole lot of blood flow and that is why cartilage takes so long to heal. So about 2 weeks after I tore it I had surgery, and they cut the flap off that kept catching on my knee cap and smoothed it out so it wouldn't be a problem anymore. Ten days after surgery I played in a soccer game with no pain what so ever. It was just swollen for awhile. That ski season it gave me some trouble but it was never re-injured. Over all i would say the miniscus is one of the easiest things to fix and has the least consequence, at least for now. If they have to remove the miniscus it could cause problems for you later down the line because the miniscus provides protection between your knee joint and if it is not there it is just bone on bone and that is bad. Good luck with your surgery mang.

Im in the same position as you. Torn ACL and probably torn medial MCL and planning to do the same.

Start a physiotherapy if you havent yet. This helped me a lot.

May I ask if you have any instability or can you do everything you did before?

I tore my minescus (sp?) to the point that I needed surgery. Had the surgery in october, doctor said wait 6 months before skiing or anything active so maybe only some spring skiing, i said fuck that and was skiing hard again by later december. Haven't had a problem with my knee since.
