Top sheet care

This is my first year skiing after snowboarding and just not going to the snow for seven years. I bought a pair if jskis before the season started over here in Australia and after only skiing on them now for 3 days the top sheet is looking pretty beat (chips and a ton of scratches).

My question to everyone out there is why is this / is there any way i can prevent it or repair it, and did this ever happen yo you?

Thats just something that happens to skis, bro. Ive never heard of someone trying to repair it, because that would be unnecessary. Topsheet damage is completely cosmetic

Just cut any slices that haven't fallen off yet with a razor, and super glue over it. That's about all you can do. Top sheet chipping is just something that happens with skis

This. Top sheet care is more prevention rather than intervention.

On the 'prevention' note, try filing down the angle that forms where your sidewall meets the topsheet. Rounding it off will help prevent bigger chips as the edge will hit the rounded angle and won't dig in quite as easily

Use candle repair kits. It's the same thing you use on bases

only problem with this is the candles only come in clear and black and the topsheet isn't black or clear so I think this would make it look worse but, yes it would close the chips. publicly smite me if I'm wrong

Almost all your topsheet damage comes from you stepping on your own skis and shit (short of other people riding over them). If you want to prevent it experience will help. You said this is your first year skiing so you likely dont have experience. It will come with time.

yes^ i use a razor blade and just clean them up, then super glue where needed. i also slightly sand the very tip so that where the skis bang together. this creates a smooth edge so the edges dont dig in an create more chips. people probly think im an idiot but it really works, and btw im not hardcore sanding the noses, just enough to smooth it out (just on the edges of the topsheet)

Don't fuckin smack your skis together on the lift to get snow off them and don't bang them together

Rip out your edges. You might have a tiny bit of trouble turning on ice but at least your skis will still look sick in the lift line.

Yeah thanks guys, I'm still learning the ropes and getting back to my prior ability, so I'm still pretty shit.

And just for curiosities sake, how deep does a cut have to be before it causes actual functional damage rather than cosmetic?

There would have to be visible core material for it to start causing damage, which is rather deep. It is not impossible to get to it though, i have done it.

The repair in that situation stays the same, razor blade + superglue.

You have to hit the skis together hard to go down to the core but it can happen. Just visually keep an eye ob the chips if you begin to see wood at all then you do need to get it filled so the core wont rot from tHe inside. Things you can do is regularry change feet with the skis. You will only really catch the insides pf the ski so if you change feet regularry you will even out the damge more. Also keeping an eye and cutting off any loose topsheet will prevent furtger damage.

But it is mainly just that you are a beginer again. As you inprove you will catch the skis less an the problem will become less of an issue.
