Im thinking of getting a new guitar and i think im going to get a gibson sg but i was wondering what others i should consider?

I HATE FENDERS!!

I CAN ONLY SPEND $600

you could get a good ibanez or yamaha solid body for around 500. what makes you want an SG? I don't like how they play, and the sound is nothing special. Gibson's solid guitars are highly overrated in my opinion. If you like them though, you can get a Gibson LP for around 700. I'd recommend that over an SG.

There's my fender-free advice. I love fenders though.

my friend got a nice ibanez for like $500

gibson flying v or sg maybe

jackson dinky

schecter hellraiser

and last but not least

fender strat!

progrossive rock, digital, and a bit of indie

for example, muse, ratatat, and the decemberists

ooo

lmao

were all suggesting metal/kinda harder rock guitars

dont get an sg

get a lespaul for that kinda stuff, or melody maker

or i hate tehm too but a strat or a tele would be perfect

or a jaguar

Gibson guitars are mostly just a name brand now, their quality has suffered through the years and their prices only get higher. What are your preferences in shape? Tone? How thick do you like the neck?

I suggest looking at Ibanez, Jackson, the higher end BC Rich Mockingbirds, Schecter, and maybe even an old Charvel of Kramer if your looking for used.

then you don't really need an SG...If you weren't against fenders, an American Standard or American Fat Strat would be good for that kind of stuff.

sgs are really cliche. depends on what kind of image your going for. check out some deans, and some jacksons, and some ESPs. or if your really rich check out bernie rico jrs.

Just like you would state if you were looking for skis, you should say what kind of music you want to play. I have a Gibson Les Paul Menace, and I swear you will never find a nicer guitar as far as playability and versatility. Fender strats are also very nice guitars, and i don't see how you can be a fender hater. Ibanez Roadstars (i think?) are pretty nice if you're looking for a strat not made by fender.

Electric guitars would be nothing today without Leo Fender. Try out some combinations of the Strat/Tele's with different pickup combos. I personally like the straight up 3 single coil Strats, and the classic pickups on Teles, but to each his own. The humbucker bridge pickups on the Strats can open up huge spaces in tonal variety, so don't rule them out. As for other companies worth checking out, Gibson is a bit above your price range unless you can find a decent one used. The Gibson Blueshawk is a smaller bodied, semi-hollow guitar that normally retails for near $800, they sound great. Hamer also makes some really nice guitars, offering both extremely high end customs guitars and everyday low to mid range guitars with quality craftsmanship and components. As was mentioned above Ibanez and Schechter should also be checked out, Ibanez has more of a variety of actual guitar styles, and wood/pickup combinations that would give you a good place to start. Schecters are basically all the same with different appoinments, inlays and nicer materials. That should be a good start for you there, unless you wanted a guitar that you can "shred" on, more metal influenced tone. Then you would want to look more into BC Rich, or Jackson. They offer lower profile necks and generally hotter pickups. Basically, take your money and hit up a few shops, plug in to an amp that is similar to what you play and spend a few hours trying to find the guitar that fits what you are looking for.

Why in hell would anyone hate fenders ?

My friend has a 52 vintage hotrod telecaster, I swear its the sweetest thing I ever played

no question, i can't wait for these. i'm getting a case for mine.

two best guitars

Mine and my dads

I have a Paul Reed Smith Custom 24

He has a 1969 Gibson 335 *MINT*

his guitar is the only thing i envy. the only thing i want when he dies. lol.

I'm definitely going to have to disagree with you on the PRS. They made great guitars back in the day when they were first getting started. Since then, with all of the popularity they have gained, their quality has dropped off greatly. If a maple capped, mahogany body, with dual humbuckers is what you're looking for and you have some money to throw around, there are way better options than a PRS. Look at how bad they started selling out, making the price-point guitars to furthur enhance their share of the market. I've played lots and lots and LOTS of guitars, and all of the PRS's I've played, none have compared to my Les Paul. Both in playability and in tone.

strats are dope shit.

but yeah i agree with you man, teles are too sick. i just love that more metally sound man, so electric.

but this guy said he hates fender, i dont know why.

so for you, thread creator, go with an epiphone or ibanez.

just look at what your favourite artists are all playing, most of them would be fenders. so why do you hate them?

the necks are super thick, i also hate how the teles have a super arched neck (like a violin) and how the strats have a wrped neck for better chords on high frets.

also, right now i have an epihone dot.

in a new guitr i would want:

a matte neck for easy sliding up and down

good travel

relatively good pickups

a thinner, rounded neck

lower profile frets

and a omfortable body for endless hours of playing.

Something like this might be what you are looking for...

Ibanez SZ520QM

Mahogany body with maple cap will give it a warm, smooth tone with lots of sustain. The set 3 piece neck will add to the sustain. Dual Seymour Duncan designed humbuckers will definitely be more than sufficient. All of the Ibanez's I have played have low profile necks for ease of play and movement. It's 22 frets with obvious ease of reachability to the high frets.

i bought a vintagey looking blonde epiphone casino for about 600 and its a fucking great guitar.. just like a gibson only called an epiphone.. its basically like the more afordable one.. they're sick.. go to www.froogle.com and search epiphone casino.

I'm pretty sure the electronics aren't inherently worse. Epiphone just has less quality control. Maybe that's what you meant though.

^And someone up there posted a picture of an Ibanez. That's a pretty decent guitar, my little brother has one. His has jumbo frets though, you might have to special order low profile frets as most stock frets these days on those kind of guitars tend to be bigger.

thats sickkk.. but yeah.. epiphones are chill for poor people.. or people who aren't that great but want a nice, chill guitar.

i tried a different model tele than what i was used to. i was surprised with the small frets and how they made the guitar play. however, i didnt like the arched layout, aswell as the glossy neck. i did however prefer the tele to the strat.

More importantly than the electronics is the species and quality of wood, as well as the way the wood was cut. Gibson uses only select mahogany and maple for their guitars. Epiphone uses what they can get away with for many of their guitars. Just so you all know, Epiphone does indeed make excellent guitars, just not so much anymore. Their hollowbodies, like the Sheraton and the Dot are very very nice guitars.
