Just wanted to give you guys a real statement from our side of the story. It sucks that is has come down to this. To have someone of Jon’s status personally call us out for things that are untrue, and spread rumors based on assumptions just isn’t right. Simon called Jon the day our video was released online, and discussed the event and video release itself. To show respect, Simon happily took the edit off of his website. We never went out of our way to say anything bad about this event or Jon himself. We have our own opinions on many things regarding this event, but kept them to ourselves as a matter of personal respect. We feel bad that we now have to set the record straight and back up our own reputations thanks to Jon’s blog post.

Jon is speaking about us and the event as if we're deliberately trying to sabotage his event in some way; which we have not and would never do. He also describes us as "not speaking to him or saying goodbye because of our score" which is completely untrue. We didn't have a chance to talk to him at the awards, and apparently never went out of our way to search out where he was staying to find him and thank him. For him to say we simply blew him off and disrespected him is completed unfounded. It isn't all one sided either; just as athletes are nothing without great events like JOSS... an event is also nothing without the top quality athletes. We all owe a lot to Jon for putting on such a fun event, but he also owes a lot to all the athletes that worked their absolute hardest for two long weeks to create videos with his name on them.

We would never outright attempt to disrespect Jon or put down this event in anyway. It is and has been one of the most fun events we've ever participated in. We respect Jon and all the hard work he has put in to make this event happen! We've spent thousands of dollars traveling to and staying Sweden, and have nothing to show for it after 2 long weeks of work other than our edit. That is why we decided that we would share our video with the world as soon as possible. By no means are we trying to steal the lime light from the other teams, because if anything this has captivated people and brought the stoke level to an all time high for the other videos to be released. We are just as excited as everyone else to watch all of the videos again. And we will watch all of them from Jon's site.

The reason we were upset and confused is simply because the judging criteria was so far-fetched from anything we've seen in the past. We were never informed of such drastic changes in the judging. This year as we found out at the awards ceremony the judging was based almost entirely on film making/theme. A perfect video to describe what the judges were looking for would be the hilarious video Colby and Symms made last year (which by the way received last place last season.) We are not upset in the way the contest was judged, but just upset that we had no idea it was going to be judged as such. The way the judging was done this year, it would be smarter for Jon to invite 2 filmers next year and let them pick their corresponding athletes instead of inviting athletes themselves. The filming/theme was more than 50% of your score this season, making top notch skiing almost unnecessary. But once again we are not upset at how it was judged; just that we had no idea it was going to be judge this way.

One factor that should have been considered and scrutinized more before being an integral part of the judging, was the distribution of points. The judging criteria and points breakdown given on the website is completely different then the format used to score the videos for awards. The judges gave 1 point for the 3rd place team in each judging category then 2 points for 2nd and 3 for 1st, and no points for 4th or below regardless of how close they were to placing in the respective judging category. The way points were awarded, the judges were basically saying that if you weren’t going to be one of the top 3 teams in a category, don’t bother adding it to your edit because you won’t get any points. So teams that tried to make well rounded edits but fell a little short in areas were severely penalized for not placing in the top 3 of the teams. Had this been a Slopestyle comp, it would be like the judges saying that if you aren’t going to do one of the best 3 tricks on a feature, don’t bother hitting it because you won’t get any points awarded for it. This is a major flaw and the cause of the extreme inconsistency in judging that allows teams to simply neglect certain aspects of the contest.

By no means were we ever trying to sabotage the event that Jon has worked so hard to create. We have continued to travel around the world for this event every year in the hopes of helping it grow to become bigger and better. The idea behind this event is absolutely amazing, and we will forever give props to Jon for working so hard to create and put on an event of this nature. In terms of Jon speaking about considering more thoroughly “who he invites next year,” you don’t have to worry about us. As we have already told you and your co-workers at the event, we will not be returning next year.

Just wanted to set the record straight, and make sure Jon doesn’t give all of you the wrong impression on how everything happened!

Thanks again though Jon for all your hard work. Good luck with all of your future endeavors! And thanks again for everyone that has watched and will watch the edit we’ve made. Hope you enjoy! It is the edit we’ve made that we are most proud of, and most stoked to share with all of you!

Cheers!

man. never again will i create a thread that will just be made 5 times in the time it takes to post and five more times in 5 seconds after

wow.... kinda sucks they wont be going back next year, i mean i know all this stuff went down but they still make some sick edits, wish they would be there again......

Even still I am not sure I really know who did what...
Too bad such bad blood is brewing, the skiing community is pretty small, and even smaller at the pro level and as a consumer of skiing media I am anxious to see what the fall out from all this will be.

after that tom posted the youtbe link... this really sucks, ive always loved watching tom ski and always enjoyed joss. and not having tom and simon there is going to suck so bad next year. it's good of tom to apologize but this apology has some flaws.

As far as i understand there was still an agreement in place that the videos would be released in a selected order, therefore Tom and Simon are pussys for not honouring that agreement, regardless of anything else. Good thing your'e not coming back, cos we dont want to see such crybabies at a sick event like this!

As I just said in the other thread but seem more relevent here:
That wasn't much of an apology, more of a lengthy criticism of the event masked with a few empty words of apology. While I don't know the details of this, it seems like Team America agreed to participate in the event and by doing so agreed to a particular set of rules. Therefore, no excuse such as " We've spent thousands of dollars traveling to and staying Sweden, and have nothing to show for it after 2 long weeks of work other than our edit. That is why we decided that we would share our video with the world as soon as possible." is relevant to the situation. They need to simply admit fault (which they have not done), apologize to jon, and learn how to lose, as how you accept defeat says a lot more about you than how you win.
It seems like a measly 20 grand split five ways wasn't even the point of this thing to me anyway, more just the opportunity to ski on these jumps which would have been at least that expensive to build.

Team America's argument for leaking the video doesnt seem to hold much merit. I think it would've been best just to stick to the rules (like every other team has) and release the videos only a few days later. You guys held your tongues and respected the judging so why not do the same for the video?

I completely agree with Tom when it comes to the judging format beeing off.JOSS is a skifilm contest, and it'd be natural to put the skiing aswell as cinematography in focus.I found it strange that Team Norway did not take the win, as they won all three skiing related categories. They had the most stylish trick(s), the most technical trick(s) and the best urban part in their move, in other words 3 out of the 5 categories. In a skiing contest, that looks like a winner to me, but apparently it was't enough, could be their editing sucked..Also think Team Americas had a great edit.
When it comes to Wallish and Dummont not returning next year, I really don't get why?Because the juding format was off?As Tom puts it "It is and has been one of the most fun events we've ever participated in"- and because of the judging, which can and most likely will, be changed, they are not return next year? There has got to be something more to it..

Two wrongs don't make a right?

It seems that old wisdom doesn't fail here. Just because the event or judging didn't seem right to you, doing the wrong thing by posting your video doesn't make it any better. Right?

And in general, let me tell you as a married person and one who is a bit more mature on this website, any apology with a 'but..." in the middle of it is not an apology. It just doesnt work and isn't sincere about taking responsibility for one's actions. I am sorry it has to end on this note. I wish Dumont and Wallisch would be there. Their video was disgustingly sick. Nice job guys.

man, im just going to not log on to NS until all the videos are released.. these threads are getting annoying... you can tell ski season is over..

wow that was salty not a fan...suprised t-wall would speak like this and not return just cause he lost..and dont say you didnt intend to leak the video for any other reason then bothering jon...you tweeted 3 different links to see it and you definelty knew about jon's plans to release it so you really have nothing to back it up..why dont you jsut sack up go back next year and kill it or you can take the weak way out and bounce.

I'd liked to give u ++karma, but it was already on 10 :)

thanks for having some intelligent and mature words in here!

the leaking of the edit was wrong but that judging format makes me have much more sympathy for Team America. I mean look at how many ties the judging had this year, multiple ties make judging look unprofessional. I think the delay of the other team's edits blows this story out of proportion whos to say how sick the other entries are over team America we primarily don't know yet. Jon / Team America need to be realistic our sport is too small to develop a Pac/Biggie - diss war

jon said he will think harder about who he invites. tom said him and simon told jon there not coming back.

This all seems a bit immature....i wasnt happy with the results, so im going to disobey the rules.I dont think Tom and Simon should be getting angry at Jon for this, he wasn't the judge.
He obviously puts so much time and effort into creating an event that is the highlight of the season and for anyone to disrespect and get hissy at him, after being invited to the event, put up in sweet accomodation, partying like a king all week and most of all skiing the most perfect kickers all seasons.....
Obviously i can understand that the whole filming/editing outweighing the skiing would annoy tom and simon, especially when they weren't told about it and that this is their career. Maybe Jon did jump the gun and accuse them of breaking the rules and whatever but there's no need to start so much beef about it.
Tom and Simon should feel privileged they get to spend their lives travelling the world skiing. I respect both of them for how much hard work they put into it...but come on guys, be a bit more mature

joss will not be the same without simon and esp tom. its a shame that this is getting blown way out of proportion. ill agree that the judging was wack, but in no way should they release their video after jon specifically told them not too..it sucks all around. this could have been handled way better, but i guess when you put that much work into something for nothing, you really dont care about rules, or how will it will affect other people.

im thinking that next year, tom and simon (and all teh other top notch skieirs) should put up their own edits, from anywhere in the world

"we're sorry Jon and we never meant to disrespect you... and now I am going to write a 55 line essay of qualified apology disrespecting you and your competition"

fucking weak. quite how it is possible to write that much prose and only succeed in making yourselves look like even worse losers is beyond me, but you have certainly achieved it. congrats.

"Jon owes as (the athletes) as much as the athletes owe Jon"... GTFO.

I'm not sure where I read it but it was either on Jon's blog or the josupersessions website... but I even knew about the judging a while ago. This info wasn't a little secret kept just for the judges, it was made public. Horrible excuse. And saying how hard they worked skiing is for the edit is nothing in comparison to what Jon put in. I feel bad for Jon. It was an absolute slap in the face.

Poor poor guys. Have no idea how many people would punch a baby to go to JOSS and then go cry about it. However, big ups to Schlopy as he actually is grateful for the amazing opportunity he had.

its hilarious that winning the contest is such a big deal. I've always thought that it was more of just a fun thing to participate in and winning was icing on the cake. Anyway, I get a lol out of all this drama, so thanks guys.

drama drama drama. when we got robbed at the 1976 olympics we just hammered whiskey and went skiing. as far as joss goes sucks for all parties involved.

Yeah most def big up to Schlopy, he is the winner out of this! I think he feels better then the 2 others right now, he have more new fans now for sure.

Jesus what a little crybaby. Are you gonna cry all day crybaby. You know everyone has problems, it doesnt mean you have to be a little crybaby about it. Come on guys lets go this Tom is totally not cool. Yeah thats the most uncool kid ive ever met. Little crybaby.

We've spent thousands of dollars traveling to and staying Sweden, and

have nothing to show for it after 2 long weeks of work other than our

edit. That is why we decided that we would share our video with the

world as soon as possible.

This is so fucked up, pretty much like:

Torstein Horgmo have spent so much time and put in effort in filming his part for Standard films new movie so he can of course put it on Youtube right now. I mean waiting a couple of days cant be that hard?

whatever, a little BS on both sides. it's unfortunate but i'm sure life will go on. it would maybe be a good idea for tom and/or simon to call up jon and insure things are cool

I would have to agree with Tom Wallisch here, bad judging it isn't a filming competition this is skiing+filming. This is a lot of the reason why some of the teams in the MSS challenge were upset. Anyway you can't change the past and the video has been posted, but they won't lost any sponsors over it because even if there wasn't a team america vid on jon's page I'm still going.

This statement is perfect. You WIN just by being there and getting footage. Your sponsors win by you being there and getting footage. Jon should do like Andreas and just give out big jars of candy. They could have had 4 monkeys judging it and the winning team would be determined by how much feces was rubbed on each team's score card. Everybody still wins.

i dont want to sound like a tom wallisch worshipper or simon dumont lover, but i do feel they have one thing of truth in their post. Its true, Jon provides everything like the jumps and the name of the competition, but i do feel the event would not be nearly as baller if it wasn't for the athletes. The competition needs the top talent for it to be the top competition.
