Man, I feel for Biles. She alone is the face of US Women's gymnastics, and is the poster child of the US Olympic effort as a whole in Japan. She had an insane year leading up to this, and at 24 is more accomplished than any female gymnast before her. She doesn't just "choke." The weight of the world was on her shoulders at the same time she was having "bad" performances. She had the maturity to recognize what was going on, and to realize a potential injury was on the table, and take steps to manage the situation. Its important to realize how her teammates reacted to her decision. They get it. We're out here watching TV and tearing her down for making very sound choices directed at protecting her mental and physical health. As a lifelong competitive athlete without even a hair of her talent, I can't imagine what she's going through. It would go a long for her and for all Olympic athlete's too see the country she achieved so much for actually just fucking support her health.

As far as the Nassar thing, has she said this a reason for why she didn't perform? Not at all, not once, it likely has nothing to do with it. She put down some shitty runs and wasn't able to reconcile. Rather than trying again and maybe accepting defeat because losing and how you take a loss is part of being an athlete she outright quit.

Like I said above, she's going to compete in all her personal events. Hopefully then you guys can see how this was all bullshit and nothing to do with mental health, she wasn't able to perform and rather than accepting that she quit. Show me any great athlete, or any athlete at all, that has ever quit during the NFL playoffs, the NBA playoffs, the World Series, the CFB playoff, the NCAA tournament or any other major team title because they were overwhelmed by mental pressure. I’ve never seen it.

Yea this reminds me of a recent story about someone who was running for office in the upcoming election. They dropped out of the race and made a statement saying they they couldn't handle the pressure and didn't want to affect their mental health. A week later they came out and said they were forced to drop out because they had some boudoir photos online (that they had already disclosed) and the party told them to say it was for stress/mental reasons.

No saying Biles has nudes online or anything like that, but it's tough to buy that someone like her would drop out at that stage in the game because of stress. Seems more like something she would be told to say.

Its a pretty shit take to question her drive and mindset given what she's achieved. With all the pressure it would be even harder to make the call to sit, which she also did for the team because she didn't want to cost them a medal. She trusted the alternate on the team to perform better than she would for the teams benefit. Pretty mature call.

In this case, I see it as her listening to herself and knowing she was failing but rather than accepting the reality of her failure at her teams detriment, she put trust in her replacement to do better than she would have. It does take a lot of strength to know you are weak in a moment with all eyes on you and make a decision for the whole rather than your own personal glory. The team still won a silver rather than potentially nothing which is huge to the rest of the less famous gymnasts on it.

Cristiano Ronaldo picked up a knee sprain in the first half of the 2016 Euro Final, watched from the sidelines, and was lucky to have his team win. In my mind, its time to start equating mental health to physical health which means you can have mental injuries that are linked to physical performance. Some you can push through, others you can't. In a sport with a huge mental component like gymnastics, a fucked headspace will lead to failure and its refreshing to see it caught before implosion.

This "don't try hard" shit pisses me off, it's cool to try hard, it's cool to give it your all and be proud of your country and yourself no matter what.

He would be labelled a phony and a quitter and there would be a stain on his resume for the rest of time about how he called himself the GOAT and wasn't able to do GOAT things in the moment. If you are the best player, and you call yourself the best player you best believe you are depended on to be the BEST on the field when it comes down it. No one should substitute out for you in the moment if you are the best. If you fail to meet these standards you get criticism, if you outright quit? You'll get outrage.

I don't think a single team would sign him after that his NFL career would be over. I don't want to hear the argument about how gymnastics is more mental than football, you risk just as severe injury in football in a brain fart moment because there are 3 250lb linebackers coming to kill you as you do flipping on a springboard. If it's a physical sport mental plays just as big of a role as physical in 98% of sports cases. I think our standards should be the same for all great athletes, regardless of their gender. The Biles reaction compared to what I believe the Brady or LeBron reaction would be suggests that our standards for women athletes are far more lenient.

Hell or even park skiing. If Tanner or Dumont would have bailed on a halfpipe run 30 min before their start time at the X-games nobody would call them a hero even though pipe comp skiing is 100 times more dangerous than gymnastics. I get the whole "We need to focus on mental health" but bailing out after so many people put so much into you being there for a specific event is not heroic.

Dude your hyperbole is pretty crazy and youre extrapolating a lot from this. I dunno where you're getting this whole "dont try hard" bullshit from but its insane to me that youre applying it to the best woman gymnast in the world with two moves named after her. I can confidently say that no one on this site has tried at anything in their life as hard as she's given herself to gymnastics. Its dismissive as fuck to just say that she wasn't feeling alright mentally and quit.

I know you didn't want to hear it but gymnastics are much more mental than football. Its not about the consequence of injury that makes a sport mental or not. In football you get multiple instances to change the course of a game and swing it one way or another. There's also a margin for error in your actions and a way bigger chance for your teammates to cover your mistakes. Sports like diving, gymnastics, archery, and even slopestyle require perfection and routine. Executing your routine perfectly is where the mental game comes into play. You only get one try in gymnastics and the expectation is perfection.

Our media is hyping her up a ton for this because its unusual. Maybe its too much hype but I don't need to tear her down for it. I think it takes a ton of maturity to be the best and proclaim it but then to swallow your pride and admit you can't be the best for your team on that day.

It was premature to call herself the goat despite her valid claim to it, and the leotard with it was too far imo. I can't fault her too much tho because she hasn't lost an all around competition since 2013.

I agree. Its disgusting the way the media is fawning over her over this. Sure, there are aspects of mental health in gymnastics that need to be addressed like constant pressure as a young athlete etc. But to bail on the world stage at the last minute and have everyone say you are brave is bullshit. I mean even if your not 100% on your game you still have to try. What a shit lesson to teach young people that you can just throw in the towel and be called a hero.
