Tobbaco Ads on NS

This topic keeps coming up. I'm seriously tempted to try experimenting with a really simple subscription model...

That's scary for sure and seems like a huge risk. For the most part, the ads are ski related or at least relevant besides the new Snus one. How many people would actually subscribe to the site? Clutter, repost and stupid threads could be eliminated but I couldn't it see it being worth the risk. Plus, I assume ad space lines the pockets better than 500(maybe would get 500? Hard to say who would pay) core members paying monthly or annually.

*If you didn't mean a paid subscription, totally ignore my post*

Oh I do mean a paid subscription - but it wouldn't be like a forced one, it would be something where you can say pay one amount to have reduced ads and another amount to have no ads. Perhaps we could layer in something like premium content, special access, enhanced features as well.

I'd never shove the whole site into subscription - but people keep bringing it up and if we could do something right that is totally opt-in for extras vs. hide stuff to force payment it might be interesting to at least try.

For the most part Advertising is a great revenue model, and ideally we just eventually come to a balance of enough money to actually grow the site vs. the user experience of too many ads. However there are loads of people who want to take part, but absolutely loathe advertising.

I don't mind ads in the slightest, and always trade free content for advertising without blinking an eye, but every time this comes up it seems like there's others that don't necessarily share that opinion.

Makes a lot of sense, Mr. Bishop. For what it's worth, NS isn't too cluttered at all. Once ads start actually popping up or try to trick you into clicking the x's just to open them, then I'd think we'd have a problem. Premium content and what you mentioned sounds like a great idea to play with. Great/interesting seeing the site evolve over the years. New forums, MoTM, top stories, polls, etc.

I am currently getting a concealed carry ad, which I find pretty funny.

'Murica. I wonder if people in Europe get this ad.

Skiing has always been about Sex, drugs and rock and roll. If you think this generation invented it you are dead wrong. This ad as from 1976. The "powder" was flowing and the snow was too. Trust me, your parents partied way harder than you. they just don;t want you to know about it.
