Tobacco age vs Alcohol age

I'm the only one who is trying to figure out why you can get tobacco 3 years earlier than you can alcohol. Even though you can't get killed instantly from smoking a cigarette or chewing tobacco it leads to 440,000 deaths in the US each year when alcohol leads to 75,000 deaths in the US each year.

More importantly, some people want to be seen with a cig to be cool, yet it is illegal to have open alcohol in public so the different purchase ages definitely aren't that way to avoid people misusing through peer pressure.

Anyone have anything to say on this subject?

Two things come to mind-

1-The special interest groups that lobbied for alcohol regulations had more influence. It is a lot harder to tell Mothers Against Drunk Driving to shut up and go away than it is to tell some anti-smoking group to shut up and go away.

2-Alcohol impairs senses and judgment and can kill more innocent people than tobacco.

this is the number one reason you have to be 21 to buy alcohol is because its easier for innocent people to die than a little second hand smoke....but i agree with the war part too, if you can give your life for your country you should be able to drink some fucking beer dammt.

38,000 deaths per year in the US due to second hand smoke.

I can't find the amount of innocent people who die because of alcohol, but I'm sure its not more than 38,000 because the total is 75,000

If you're old enough to die for your country, you're old enough to celebrate your first confirmed kill with a beer.

ehhh drinking age on military bases is 18...so if you actually do something for the country you get more rights...kinda.

alcohol doesn't have the esteemed history in america as it does in say germany where beer dominates the country and its respected

in america (this is true) we just drink to get fucked up, compared to the germans who still do the same, its just accepted to drink wine and beer with the family.

also tobacco ran our economy in its earliest years, so its just accepted. my dad said you only had to be 18 to drink and buy alcohol when he was young, and they didn't care who bought cigs, but legal was 18. so its just recently this happened.

yea i know its gay, but its true, they keep it away from us because its not like in germany where legal age is 16, they can drive until 18 (?) so yea thats just what i know.

so i guess ask would you trade your license for 3 years of buying alcohol easier?

yea if it didn't make sense sorry

You hardly ever make sense ahahaha, seriously.

But I understood the first part, but shouldn't understanding/knowledge rank higher than heritage?

having tobacco in public will be illegal soon. im so excited to yell at people smoking in public.

stop whining its been that way since the week afer my dad turned 18 hes almost 50 now

get used to it they rnt gunna change it cuz its not worth it

people are gunna do it anyways laws are just a joke for cops to get paid there all complete bullshit but who cares become rebelious fight the power you arnt gunna get anywhere except either dead in the hospital or in jail

keep it up guys

It's like that here in Toronto, the other day I was like wtf is that?? and somebody was smoking. But oddly enough I half enjoy the smell of smoke now. Thats what happens when you get used to it.

so your saying that if you are old enough to be sent to die in some foreign country, if you are mature and old enough to become an instrument of war, you shouldn't be able to consume alcohol.

Its all the same bullshit.

Just like how to sign up for the draft, it takes about two minutes, to sign up to vote, it takes about a month.

exactly

i never said it should or shouldnt be i said it WONT change

and its still your choice to go die in the armed forces no ones making you...anymore/yet atleast

what do you mean about a month? I got my voter's card within minutes of getting my license at the DMV. Is it different elsewhere?

One of the biggest reasons individual states haven't lowered the drinking age in their respective states is because the federal government won't pay for interstate roads if their drinking age is lower than 21. Sooo... unless there is a direct change at the federal level everybody is just going to have to live with the drinking age at 21.

But i thnk it is bullshit that you can help elect the most powerful leader in the entire world at 18 but you are not able to have a beer afterwords.

I kinda like the way it is in Norway, where you can buy beer if your 18, but can only buy liquor if your 21.

Though I have been witness to friends dying from alcohol related accidents in highschool. I think the major problem is kids who drink and drive, because they don't know any better and would just like to act cool.

tobacco companies want kids to start smoking younger so they get addicted and the companies can make more $$$$$money$$$$

somebody just graduated from dare!!!

how wuz the fifth grade buddy

i hate all those stupid truth comericials, and no stank you. theyre geared towards people who cant read good and want to do other things good too.

America has fucked up laws, this is old news. A small group of kids are killed from being fucking stupid about drinking, and their moms bitch and complain and say its the alcohol corperation'f fault when really its the kids for being so godamn stupid. If they didn't want their kids drinking, they could've been more protective.

So in order to shut these republican bitches up, lawmakers say "ok if we raise the drinking age and meet all your astinine, emotionally-induced, biased, bullshit proposals, will you stop complaining?"

Thats America. The land of no responsibility.

age restrictions for pretty much everything are stupid and worthless except for driving. its the age restrictions for alcohol that make it so "cool" and tempting for people to do. is the law ever going to stop kids from drinking? who seriously says no i wont drink because its against the law? nobody.

That right there says all that needs to be said. Everybody now just looks for the shortcuts out. It's a lot easier to pin the blame on someone else than to deal with the fact that you're responsible.

Fact: Drinking age in the military or on base actually isn't 18. Unless you're on an overseas post. There's one base right on the mexican border that allows it because they had so many kids crossing the border to go drink and doing stupid stuff or getting robbed/raped/etc.

how hard would it be to install something in all future cars that won't let you drive if your BAC is past a limit.

JD did it for sasha why can't car manufacturers

Actually in driving school they told us that this is installed as part of DUI probation. But then again, you can just get some random sucka to blow on it, yet I don't think many people would do that for em.

completely true, its just the few bitchy rents that are complete stubborn humans that have stong power in the governamtn that fuck up all the laws, and yes, going to war at 18, to die and kill, but not being able to have a beer is obsurd
