i'd normally put something like this in the dl, but seeing that its not a big enough group i'll go ahead and attempt to see if it works here...
i was at the gym yesterday working on some stuff and as always the kid behind the counter was dj'ing the freshest mtv hip hop cuts...all of us white kids together with our repititions enjoying the beat as it drove us along. but in the middle of this i got to thinking...
i just went on a trip to southeast asia (which was amazing) and like in all travel guides, i noticed that our books on cambodia, thailand and vietnam all had sections or information about existing ethnicities - often some sort of hill tribe still living by their 'cultural traditions.' see, travellers - from everywhere really - like to learn about cultural groups like that, the ones that stand apart from the run of the mill national culture.
in the middle of this hip hop i wondered what travel guides about america say. obviously there has to be a fascination and a dedicated interest towards the aboriginal groups (native americans), but i also wondered about what they might have said about other ethnicities...
as the hip hop was thumping i thought about the cultural wealth that is black people in the united states. i thought about how fucking proud we should be to have something that is so unique and contributive to who our society is. the poets, the musicians, the political thinkers...even here in america whether you're a cold blooded racist or a fucking hippy chances are, you (like everyone else) have a particular fascination with what black people come up with, who they are, what they say, the things they do...chances are you pay attention.
so what i'm trying to say is, are people from other countries who come here, do they have an interest to see and experience black culture...do they want to see it as much as i wanted to see unique cultures in south east asia?
