To those of you who have skied in the Andes...

I have a list of about 10 places that i want to study abroad and I'm having problems narrowing it down because everywhere i want to go, i have a different reasons why i want to go there. Chile is on my list as one of them. I would go next summer around June or July to either Santiago or Valdivia. So i have a couple questions for those of you that have skied/been in Chile and hopefully this will help me make a decision.
-What would you compare the skiing to in Chile during the months of June/July- considering it's their winter? Is if hard to get to the Mountain if you don't have a car? What is the best way to travel there (to and from the mtn) if you don't have a car?
-Would Santiago or Valdivia be a better place to be as far as the skiing goes- meaning which one is closer to skiing and how close; if close at all?
-I read a little about the Three Valleys Chile- is this close to either the cities i would be in?
Thanks! Tell me about your experiences there ! Any information is greatly appreciated.

Iv never skied in chile, but I've been there twice, and i would recommend santiago. I know there are few mountains within relatively close proximity of the city (I think Velle Nevado and El Colorado are close, im sure there are others), and besides that its an awesome city. You have a sick view of the Andes from there, and its really cool to experience the new culture, but you will get that no matter where you go.
On a non-skiing related note, if you end up in santiago, or chile in general, you should also definitely hit it Valparaiso/Vina Del Mar. Its a coastal town and its also really cool. And while your in Santiago (again, if you go obviously), definitely be sure to check out la Moneda, and definitely make the hike up Cerro San Cristobal for a sweet arial view of the city.
And above all else while you are there, you MUST try Humitas. Seriously. The most delicious corn dish ever. DO IT.

im from chilesantiago to 3 valles is like 1:15 and valdivia to 3 valley iit would be like 3 : 00 hoursyou can see the 3 valles from santiago so go there....

I spent this past summer in Argentina. Not much help, but find me on facebook (Jack Pollner), add me, and you can see all the photos I shot that will give you an idea of what is down there.

i went down to chile this summer with stoney_time (ns'r) and it was sick!!!he has family in santigo then we went up to the 3 mountains (el colorado, valle nevado, la parva) and stayed in a hostel. it was amazing even though we didn't have the best snow (only a 2 pow days) the rest we did local comps and kicked it in the park but it was defiantly an amazing experience. for sure check it out.. skiing REAL mountains in the summer=bomb.com

i'll hopefully be going to chile over christmas, so my threads for when i need to figure out cool stuff to do there

i just got back from four weeks in chile, i rode portillo for a week which was sick and then a place called las trancas which was also the bomb,

portillo is like three hours bus ride from santiago, call up the resort and ask to get a bus transfer, they seem to only go on saterdays so you stay up there for a week, the resort is small i guess like only the big hotel and then the backpacker places, but you meet all the guests by like the second day in the hottub, it wasnt a great snow year this year but the place has a whole lot of potential, plus you can heli ski per run its 350 for one run then 170 for every run after that. no tree skiing though so if you get skunked by the weather i hope you like chilling in the bar. no park either but huge mountains and massive party. the whole resort moves at the same time, hot tub, then bar, then dinner, then bar, then disco, then staff pub.

Las trancas is differnet super fun glades and then cool chutes and stuff, we stayed at a place called to snow lodge in town which is like 20 mins away from the resort but theres a big expensive hotel with a casino on the hill, not a huge night life, but awesome skiing.

Las trancas is like 9 hours by bus from santiago, you take a bus to chillian then another up the resort. without a car at the resort you would have to hitchhike from town if your not staying on the hill, there is a small bunch of shops where dudes will put on chains for you for like 2000 peso.

hope that helps, the place is sick.
