TO EVERYONE WHO SAYS 1x2.35 CAN NOT BE DONE WELL

Who said it couldn't?

I'd say normally people just 'dont' do it right. How is the edit an example of doing it 'right'? Id like to hear your feedback.

there was a thread on here a few weeks ago of someones edit and people didnt like it cause he chopped heads off because of 2.35 crop...

I will look for it and link it if i do.

Yes, that is the inherent problem of using a 2.35 crop for ski edits. That doesn't mean it cant be done...

yes, people didn't like it because he used the 2.35 crop wrong thus saying he shouldn't have used a 2.35 crop ratio...

This dude (crutchkiller yea?) didn't chop people's heads off and it was done really well, I know what thread you're talking about and people said it was hard to do well, not impossible lol.

TO ALL WHO SAY 1x2.35 CAN NOT BE DONE WELL IN A SKI EDIT. FALSE. IT CAN.

Like Evan said, it wasn't an issue that nobody can do cinemascope well, it's an issue that too many people do it without shooting accordingly. If it's going to work, it has to be shot to work.

It worked fine in that edit, yes, but it's not a stellar example. Wide glides + cinemascope crop doesn't make it awesome. It was posted in the other edit, but a great example of good cropping is The Essence.

If your definition of "good" is merely keeping the subject within the frame, then sure. In which case, even dashboard cams have aesthetic merit.

Some of the one-point perspectives worked well, but beyond that it was the same unmotivated use of space with the measly benefit of not having the skiers' heads chopped off. I'm not saying it was bad at all; it's just that I don't see how the aspect ratio served the video.

Besides, as it has been said by everyone else here, nobody claimed that it can't be done. It's just that many people who shoot action sports (skiing) can't be bothered to learn the fundamentals of perspective and composition.

This is a great point as well, not every shot is composed to keep a skiers head in frame, at any aspect.

I agree with landis' point here as well, its clearly a canon with an 11-16 @11 cause every shot is just so wide and a full skier in the middle 1/6 of the frame.

In reality, follow cams @2.35 will always look like this, unless you shoot tight and intend to only get the skis or something in your frame.

This is probably one of few edits i've made @2.35 that I actually like my framing/composition.

Framing is a tough thing.... its very hard to wrap my head around it. Something i try to work on every day.

I do love this edit. Great job. I love the whole feel.

Yea I still wish I had just shot that edit at 16x9 and gotten closer. As a lot of people have mentioned 2.35 looks better if shot with a tele. That being said I had crop bars on my camara and I planned on using the crop so it came out.

As previously mentioned watch "The Essence." It's probably the best example of a 2.35 in skiing.
