I've been having some knee trouble and I've been trying to figure it out for the past 2 seasons. I have
gone to a few doctors and none have really been able to give me any really good ideas to fix the problem.
I haven't yet gotten an mri but I will describe the problem and pain i'm having. Its a pain on the on the rear
lower, outside part of my knee and when its really bad, it hurts up to the lower part of my quad and high
part of my calf. What really hurts when I ski is when I land back seat. It also gets really stiff and sore
when I sit for a while with my legs up and then bend it after.
I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem before and if you've fixed it. I would really
appreciate some good advice or help. The Doctors have told me that my hamstrings are pretty tight and
that it might be that.

knees are real complicated.

get an mri. get surgery if necessary.

do physical therapy.

rest properly otherwise you will just hurt it again.
 
first i would say if it hurts that bad probably stop skiing. just an idea. also sounds like you might of hyper extended it or possible pulled a small muscle which is causing extra strain on your other joints/muscles in the area
 
If you have tight hamstrings, try streching them out. I dont have any problems like this but i had tight hamstrings a while ago and the sports therapist just had me do this crazy stretch that helps stretch them out. lay on the ground near a doorway, put one leg on the doorframe and the other leg through the door. do this for like 5 minutes and try inching your ass towards the doorframe until ur leg is flat against the frame. at first i couldnt come close to getting my leg flat, but after like 2 weeks i could do both legs flat. hope that helps, otherwise goodluck finding the real problem
 
I have pretty bad knee pain also. I've had it for a bout two years now and I went to a doctor a few months ago finally (he wasn't all that helpful, since he said nothing about the crackling noise they make). He said it was lose knee caps, and there was friction so that created the pain. He also said it's because of weak thigh muscles. I don't really know why it happened but I went the gym for a while and did a lot of leg workouts and did physical therapy. I didn't do the therapy all that much but I haven't really felt any improvement.

One of the worst parts is if I bend my knees they make pretty gross crackling noises, and causes pain. It's a pain in the ass to just sit on the ground. Do your knees make any noise?
 
the part where it gets stiff and hurts when you move it again sounds like when I had tendonitis.
The number one recommendation I have is go to a good, sports specific doctor. That's who is going to tell you what's going on.
I went to 2 doctors who told me that it was "growing pains" when I had knee problems from running cross country in high school. Then I went to a sports specific doc, and he diagnosed is as patellar tendonitis, gave me some stretches and a strap that I wore on my knee which relieved pressure, and I was back to normal a couple weeks later. I only took a week off from running.
 
I have no idea about the cracking... one of my knees does crack, but its because I got surgery on it, and the scar tissue cracks up when I bend it.
 
first of all you should go see a sports doctor or a physio. They can

inform you way better than a family doctor or at the hospital. You

should get an xray sometimes people have water on their knee and that

causes a lot of pain ! My friend just had that. This water usually comes from ligament injuries or meniscus tears. If you ever fell wrong while landing a jump fluid that comes from injured ligaments may have accumulated within the joint of your knee. Usually if a doctor finds water on your knee they will drain it and you will have sudden relief.
 
ya I just read the thing again and water on the knee wouldnt be located behind your knee but in front so it doesnt work ha. I guess you should stretch way more.... and see a trainer in a gym , and explain the pain you have to him , they know a lot about muscle pain especially when it comes to sports. He can show you how to train in a certain way that your muscle will be stronger and how to strech it too! good luck
 
ye I guess I wasn't super clear... I've seen two sports doctors and one regular doctors... I'm pretty sure its no the lcl because that reduced lateral stability and my knee is still good to go as far as stability goes.
From all the info I've gathered I'm pretty sure its either hamstring or IT Band.
 
Get an MRI, now.

I'm not trying to scare you but I had almost the exact same symptoms about two years ago during my senior soccer season. It didn't happen all the time, mostly when I was running. Then one day the pain hit me so bad I couldn't walk for 3 days. Except my pain didn't hit me in the calf like yours.

Turns out I had a tumor behind my knee that was fucking with my blood flow and nerves. It could have ended badly if I didn't get it checked out in time.

But really, a young person shouldn't have phantom pains like that. An MRI is the only way to find out what's going on underneath the surface.
