To all of newschoolers.... Please help us Brits get some of our skiing history back.

I accept that this is probably futile, but it won't stop myself and others trying.

Roughly two years ago, the largest dry slope in the UK was burnt down by arsonists. Until the rise of the snowdomes, Sheffield ski village was the life of the English freeskiing and snowboarding scene. Woodsy learnt to ski there, it's proximity to a popular skate park attracted him and many others to take up skiing and snowboarding.

Unlike the snowdomes, the ski village had a natural vibe to it. It didn't feel manufactured, like a tonne of money had been thrown at producing something world class. It was a complete shithole, but one of the best loved shitholes in the world. It didn't cost £25 ($40) to ski for two hours. Fuck, it didn't cost much more than that to ski there for a week. It was accessible, I could walk there from my house on the outskirts of sheffield in 45 minutes. From the city centre, only twenty. While the snowdomes perpetuate the idea that skiing and snowboarding were elitist, only for the few who actually want to pay £30 for half an evenings entertainment, the ski village was the opposite.

Since it burnt down, it has only become worse. The dry slope has degraded and overgrown beyond all hope of repair. It is well known now as a spot to dump your old sofa, then burn it out along with whatever else you want gone.

The 1000000000000000th petition to save the ski village has recently been launched. Even though the bar has been set low at 1000 signatures, after the relative successes the British olympic team this petition is slowly gathering momentum.

Please help us and sign the petition.

The land was sold for real estate and i'm pretty sure they started dismantling the slope. Still signed though.

signed, sad to see that many people started out here including woodsy and now it might no longer be there should be front page on ns

I signed it like 5 times, I really hope you guys succeed! I grew up skiing on dry slopes in England as well (I was born in the US, but my dad was offered a job at GKN in England and we moved there for 6 years). Even though I was skiing at a really shitty place with fake snow, I loved it and still do to this day.

I've signed it twice now! I went there twice when I was a nipper and it was so much fun. England needs Sheffield back on the map!

Your little quote signature thing even says that you're not proud of your country. Must be hard to be proud when you're always competing with the most free country in the world (America).

Apart from Norwich, Hemel and MK haha.

But it would be cool to see shef rebuilt although sadly I doubt it will happen. At least there is still Fax and Cas in the area.

Nah i meant a good dry slope, i enjoy going to hemel for sure as thats my closest snowdome seeing as i live in portsmouth but the freestyle dryslopes like snowtrax and bracknell (my closest 2) leave something to be desired. For me especially dryslopes make up for the kickers that the snowdomes simply arent able to build, namely halifax as you said, rossendale and hillend as their kickers are the larger ones that i know about.

I am merely being incredibly selfish here haha for wanting one in my backyard!

Yeah, the slopes around the south are pretty shit. I occasionally do Calshot when I'm south, it's fun but so unbelievably shit... Also getting to MK and Hemel takes forever, anything the other side of London is too far.

Tom - Yeah I really doubt we'll see sheffield come back. I just hate having to rely on fridges because I have no money. Even with the discount I get when I go with my uni it's £27 for three hours of the shitty Cas half park, it's more expensive if I go any other time because I have to pay for transport. I don't have enough money to do that any more than once a fortnight, and it ends up taking 7 hours out of my day. When we had the ski village I could go down any day, any time and every evening some of the crew would be there. On a sunny day everyone would be. It doesn't matter how cool fridges are - there's no substitute for that.

Yeah I get what your saying I used to love the evenings up at fax. But I was always more a fridge kid. I worked at cas for 6 years so could ride for free whenever. So like she'd was to you cas is to me. But I would love to see some more dry slopes.
