Tired legs?

My first day of the season was Tuesday, and I've gone every day since and plan to go every day until next Wednesday. The only problem is my legs are really out of shape, and they feel like bricks. Not even sore, just really heavy/tired. Are there any stretches or exercises that I could do to loosen them up, or is my only option to suck it up and deal with it?

Couldn't find anything when I searched, but I can't imagine this thread hasn't been done before though. If you know of another thread, point me that way and my bad for the repost

plyo, cycling, hiking and skiing more are all things I'd consider doing.

Plyo is great because all you have to do is jusp up a damn set of stairs or a mountain and it'll have your legs blasted in no time. Hiking is also good, and skiing more is abviously the best because its sport specific muscle targeting.

Plyo's are great for explosive strength but won't do much in preventing you from getting sore.

work on strengthening both quads and hams. leg/knee extensions, squats, roman dead lift. jogging, jumping rope and cycling are great warm ups but wont strengthen the legs much.

it is inevitable that your legs will be sore the first day out, you are activating muscles you don't use as much in the summer.

this is what I do for work, as a personal trainer. if you have any other questions let me know.

Just stretch. Sit down and stretch for a while and sort of loosen up. After relax then stretch in the morning before skiing and reapeat every day until your legs feel better. Since its your first couple days it's sort of normal don't worry

Have a gatorade or gummy bears and some protein-rich food right when you finish skiing.

Stretching isn't going to help at all, and exercises would only be helpful if you had done them in preparation- now it would just make your legs more tired.

Yea stretching isn't going to really help the problem but for me stretching feels good on my legs and sort of relaxes them. So it could temporarily relieve

Preseason conditioning, my legs did get a little sore last night even with being in shape because all their was was hike features.

Just keep skiing as much as you can and ski some moguls and pow if you have access to those thingsthats what I do to keep my legs strong.

Do 100 air squats every day for two weeks.

You wont walk for 3 days after but no more leg problems.

THIS!

Do Squats, eat steaks.

It's too late now though. Try keeping yourself really well hydrated and look for a supplement called sport legs. And stretch after you're done skiing.

get CEP socks. expensive but worth it, i can get a few more runs out of my legs everyday and my calfs are never as sore after.

that "brick heavy" feeling you get in your legs is probably pooling of lactic acid. aka, your legs are fatiguing. i usually get that feeling while i'm working my legs really hard, not afterwards....

anyways, heres what to do-

while not skiing, exercise your legs! do squats, leg extensions, leg press, calf raises, etc. also do some long distance biking (good because there is no impact like with running) or cross country skiing.... anything that gets your legs moving and burning. truthfully, skiing more is probably the best form of exercise to get your legs in shape for more skiing.

before and after skiing, STRETCH. this won't make you less sore, but it'll lessen the likelihood of injury (strains, pulled muscles, etc). also if you haven't heard of "the stick" you should look into getting one. they're used to roll out your muscles after exercise and the thing is absolutely amazing. makes your legs feel great.

the stick

last but not least, eat lots of protein. eggs, meat, peanut butter, protein shakes, however you want to get the protein into your system go get it. chocolate milk is practically nectar of the gods when it comes to protein content. not only does chocolate milk have protein in it, but it's also good tasting. studies have shown that chocolate milk does more for your body than a protein shake will.

chocolate milk has been scientifically proven to do SHIT for males. it only helps in muscle repair after it has already been used in females ONLY. diet is basic. he needs to strengthen the muscles. stretching will only go so far.... the exercise section is good info. but cycling is more of a rehab for injured knees than for strengthening.

if you'd like I can email you the studies on chocolate milk and males. just a misinformed fact thats all.

lactic acid isnt what causes muscle soreness after skiing.

its DOMS delayed onset muscle soreness.

silly 12 year olds on NS.

OP if you need real info consult a personal trainer, or doctor. you can even call a physical therapist and they will help

Isn't DOMS a build up of lactic acid?

Regardless, OP, you need to build leg endurance. I would suggest doing "knee-highs." Basically jog in place for 30, 60, 90, 120 seconds at a time while bringing your thigh up so that it is parallel with the ground each and every time.

It will hurt and burn like a mother fucker but it is gauranteed to quickly build leg endurance to allow you to hit the slopes longer.

Delayed onset muscle soreness[/b] (DOMS[/b]), also called muscle fever[/b], is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles several hours to days after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise. The soreness is felt most strongly 24 to 72 hours after the exercise.[1] It is caused by eccentric exercise.[2] After such exercise, the muscle adapts rapidly to prevent muscle damage, and thereby soreness, if the exercise is repeated.[3]

NOT lactic acid. LA drains from your muscles very quickly, within 15 minutes of intense exercise it is back to normal levels

DOMS is the condition of muscle soreness after excercise it's caused by tears in muscle fibre.

You can't really say that the cause of delayed muscle soreness in DOMS, it makes no sense because it's saying the exact same thing

Best way to not have tired legs? Ski more.

If you have to use a gym because you don't get to ski much, do a shit ton of jump squats with low weight and cycle/stair climb.

The words describing his feeling really don't matter that much. I think we can come to the conclusion that OP needs to get his legs back. It may be a little late, but try building up some endurance and strength.

Sport legs really works regardless. If your in summit county I would be happy to give some to anyone interested. I really don't get sore the day of skiing. Usually stop smoking cause I'm going to work or just done in general. The product is huge with triathletes and biathletes.

you need a day of rest. any fitness regiment will tell you to give a day to let your muscles rebuild.

and just some general knowledge.

Lactic acid is a by-product of ATP production in the muscles during anaerobic exercise (w/o O2).

Get in shape yo!
